Pair of twins. Bought the Mustang to replace the P which is now reluctantly listed in the classifieds.
It started as a VM Jag. I had a new neck made to Gibson spec. 1.6 nut width, 12 inch radius, ebony fretboard with mother of pearl inlays.
Hipshot Tuners.
Babicz Bridge.
Seymour Duncan Quarter pounder in P position and a hot jazz in the J. Music Man style truss rod.
Preamp is vol/vol/passive tone/Killswitch. The logo was a surprise. Adds a nice personal touch.
Yeah it was a direct replacement. I love it. Lots of adjustments. I have them on my Gibson basses and liked them so much I put one on this.
My luthier is currently in the process of building me a Herbie "The Love Bug" themed PJ Bass. 51' shape body w/ modern contours and EMG PJCS pickups. He starts paint this week and shaping the neck.
Recently got a PJ, Fender Limited Ed Deluxe PJ. Please pardon the terrible cell phone pic LOL

I got the 70s position in mine too. I have a blend pot on my PJ and to me the usable settings are about half way in between the P bass pickup on full and the 50/50 blend. Going towards the J pickup on the blend it starts sounding kind of nasal. I just can't warm up to that sound.Horrible for slap ( when compared to a jazz bass). Fingerstyle it sounds ok but only on the E and A string probably because of the location of the pickup.
When I go for the Jaco thing just a tiny bit of the P bass pickup blended in sounds pretty good.
Has anybody here put a second J pickup in front of the P bass pickup? So three pickups with the P in the middle? I mainly wonder how it would sound to have the two J pickups on full in that configuration.
I also like the growlier tone of the '70s J position. Thing is, not many Fender factory PJs use the '70s position for the J pup.
I have some of both, and personally, I like a little more J in the blend, when the J is in the '70s position. I seem to go through phases, though, where I like more or less J from time to time.

I did that a long time ago in a mutilated p bass copy. It was horrid. It sounded very scooped.

I do understand but what you call a PJ to me in the old days was called a California Precision, or now sometimes a Hotrod Precision.
I just figured I'd let you know my idea of a real PJ bass. Maybe I'll start my own club - if there is not already one?????

My Ibanez Mikro, which I mutilated with various visual mods as well as a new matching black bridge and a pair of EMG Geezer Butler P/J pickups:
The switch is the remains of a failed attempt to make a series connection between the pickups, that finally resulted in me just leaving them in parallel mode and bypassing all controls wiring the pickups directly to the output.
So the knobs and switch are only there for the sake of looking fancy at the moment, and although I don't really have much use of them either, I will probably sooner or later go for another attempt at making them work as first intended.

I think I started one a few years ago but it never went anywhere. Almost no one likes that configuration but us.
