I listened to Sunn O))), Ulver, Lustmörd, Negură Bunget, Blut aus Nord, etc. a lot while writing my dissertation. Dark Ambient/Drone is great for those times when you want some music on in the background but don't want anything that requires your attention. It frees the mind to concentrate on what's at hand while isolating you from outside distractions.

I agree with this.

I decided to read "At the mountains of Madness" by Lovecraft while listening to Sunn O))) 's Monoliths...

Freaked out of my mind. In a very good way.

If you want some serious Lovecraftian listening, I cannot recommend enough times that you have some Catacombs on.

Their album, In The Depths Of R'lyeh is just exactly what I imagine Lovecraft to sound like in musical form.

The bands Sulphur Aeon and The Great Old Ones are also pretty good in terms of Lovecraftian influence.

Starting a thread for the purpose of bashing a particular band is trolling. A thread about "not getting Eric Clapton" at least allows for the fact that many people do, whereas saying a band is a joke and "not music" as if that's an objective fact is being a giant bloated douchebag.

It's not the opinion that's offensive, it's the "hey look at me I think Sunn0))) is a big joke," way of expressing that opinion by starting a thread about it. And here you are typing your agreement with the OP. If you are such an out-of-the-box type of guy that "doesn't think in genres [sic]", why bash on what other people like and then pretend like you don't understand why they might take offense? That's not very open minded, if you ask me. Even if you aren't the one who started the thread.

you listed the bass player from blink 182 as your influences...i can see why you think sunno))) is ridiculous.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize liking a certain bass player means that I'm uncultured and don't know about music. Last time I checked, I listen to everything from Jaco, to Rush, to Big Band and jazz. So don't be a snob because I choose to like a bassist who's basslines aren't extremely melodic.

And here's an added note: Just because somebody thinks a band is ridiculous doesn't mean you should go and use personal details against them.

Edit: He's not even under influences on my page, he's under inspirations. Inspirations = Somebody who inspires you to pick up the instrument. Influence = Somebody who's style has physically affected your playing style.

I thought vilifying musicians/bands you don't like and suggesting their fans are uncultured was fair game around here. Don't be so butthurt, you wuss. A lot of us have to put up with this crap all the time.

How many Rush, Jaco, or jazz bashing threads pop up in Misc?

Exactly.
Did I say that it's wrong to be a fan of them, or that they're terrible musicians? No. I simply stated that it's a bit ridiculous, and that they shouldn't be so hard on the person for not liking it.

And he went beyond that, he went and tried to make a personal comment in a rude way. i'm not "butthurt", I just have no tolerance for childish behavior.

Edit: And besides, I said I like ambient music, I just think this band takes it to a slightly ridiculous level, so their comment was completely unnecessary.

So it's the people who are told their music sucks (or is ridiculous, as you put it) that are in the wrong for standing up for what they like. Hmm.

I do agree with you, though, that telling people their music and/or their taste in music sucks is childish behavior.
