Yep. Music, like food, is actually kinda simple on a personal level. Either you like it, or you don't. You don't have to justify your dislike of a particular sound more than you have to justify your dislike of a certain food. Doesn't mean the artist or the chef is bad, but some stuff you're just not going to like.

Exactly. I don't like all music I hear, but that doesn't mean I think it's a joke, or that it's not music. Hell, I don't like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Doesn't mean they're bad. Just that I don't like them.


According to you. To me, there is much more depth than in most music I hear. Because music is subjective. There are vocals, btw. Also, vocals and drums aren't necessary for music to have "depth."


"Bad" is subjective. I've heard your band, and while you guys are good, if I were paying money, I'd much rather go see Sunn O))).

As for the name, they've existed since the early 90s. If no one has tried to "enforce" that trademark by now, it's unlikely that anyone's going to.


Eh, the full story is that they're huge fans of the band Earth, who notably played very loud and used Sunn amps. They decided using that name would be a reference both to the amp worship prevalent in doom/drone, and to the band that inspired them.

Why does it bother you that people listen to music you don't like? I hate the Brandenburg Concertos, but I don't mind people listening to them, or calling them music.

Are you guys just messing with me now? I have now listened to it 3 times ALL THE WAY THROUGH and I still can't find vocals. Where are you hearing them? Or are they also extremely low frequency so that I would actually need to listen through larger speakers? I don't see how this can be considered deep music, it is literally a 5 or so second track looped for like 7ish minutes with random/strange/weird/whatever you want to call them effects throughout.

Um... it's not Sunn O)))'s fault if you're listening to them on crappy speakers.

The vocals come in at almost exactly 1:00. They are quite obvious. I'm not sure how you can be listening to more than a minute of the song and managing to miss them.

As for being looped... if you're listening closely, which you clearly are not, you can hear timbre and slight timing variations that make it pretty clear they're playing that progression, not merely having it looped post-recording.

I like Rush, but I'd rather see these guys.

I also think that at this point you're just trolling.

Even if that were true (which it isn't), what would be the problem with that? If it didn't appeal to people these guys wouldn't have a career playing it.

Never mind that drone music isn't particularly new, and playing it on electric guitars is, while newer, something that's been done for two decades or more, now.

Ah gotcha, makes sense. It's cool then are paying honor to Sunn amps and their personal love for Earth...just hope they don't get a lawsuit on their hands though.

Yeah, everyone just likes different things. I find that "Hunting and Gathering" is a bit more catchy Sunn O))) song, at least for me.

I doubt they will. No one has sued them so far. And no one is selling new Sunns. They use old Sunns almost exclusively (they sometimes have a few Ampeg SVTs thrown in for good measure).

True, I guess I was just going off since some or even most businesses these days seem to live in a "quick to sue" world, but good for them if they don't. I like their songs.

Kinda surprises me they've had no legal trouble. I'd figure _somebody_ owns the Sunn trademark (Wiki says Fender bought the remains of the original amp company), and trademarks generally have value. I'm thinking of the way Acoustic came back into the market--as a brand name, anyway.

Well, yeah, people are quick to sue. But if Fender brought back the Sunn brand, if they had any savvy, they'd make Sunn O))) their first endorser. :p

At least, that's what I'd do.

Bringing back a brand name... notice that there's a band that is named after that company, that uses their guitar amps exclusively, despite that company not having existed for over a decade... notice this band also is very well known in their genre, even if it's a niche one... getting them as endorsers seems like an obvious step, at least to me.

And more sometimes, check their stage plan for Mexico for example, (2 guitars, one bass, and Attila), there are in total:
6 Ampeg-Amps (with ten (!) 8x10"), 3 Model T's (with six Orange 4x12"), and one Orange Amp (with two Orange ) 4x12".

I've also seen O'Malley solo, without the fog and the robes, in a museum, he had 2 Ampeg fullstacks, 2 Hiwatt fullstacks and 2 Marshall full stacks. Everything dimed.
As there was no stage, you could stand just in front of his pedalboard, talking about flapping trousers!

No, it cannot be explained, like most good/great art. It would be like asking someone to explain a Jackson Pollock painting.

Just so you know, while I think the band has a sense of humor, this is no joke. They are a very serious, well-respected band, executing on a rather uncompromising artistic vision, and enjoying a quite a bit of success doing so. If you don't like it, that's all well and good, but to ridicule it might cause some serious strife. They have a lot of fans on this site.
