After 30 years of plunking around on various brands, I finally got me a clean, used USA 60's style 2013 P - rosewood / burst / tort / flats and I absolutely love it --- but it took several years to find the right one.

Now I want a USA 70's J - maple / natural / rounds --- why not?

I am extremely worried. None of my basses are black. And none of my basses are white. Am I an overlooked minority?

No worries. I know lots of people don't own a jazz or a P, and they still manage to stay afloat. Just keep in mind that a black and/or white bass may one day be a necessity for one of those nit-picky, image is more important than sound, kind of bands.

I always see threads popping up about which of the two basses is better, so today I've decided to settle the age-old debate for good (as best I can.) Above, you can see a simple poll where you can vote for your favourite of the two. Feel free to comment below about your reasons. Also, if you think that they both have their own merits and are a case of apples and oranges (which I agree with) vote for the one you would choose if you could only have one bass, as hard as that may be. Let's hope that this poll helps put the debate to rest somewhat.

PS: non-Fender J and P style basses count as well

Both.

The End. ;)

P-Bass

I love them because of their simple nature: One Vol / One Tone.

They also tend to have more "bottom" and sound "fuller" to my ears with obviously more emphasis on the midrange compared to the "scooped" tone of the Jazz. They also "punch" better IMO.

NOTHING to my ears sounds better than a mildly-overdriven (SVT) P-Bass with a fresh set of Rounds.

I also tend tend to play a lot of Punk and Rock oriented music and the P-Bass offers a "no frills" approach for me.

Of course there will never be a consensus on this question of which is "better", P or J. As others have noted, it's a bit of an exercise in futility to try and nail this down. It comes down to personal preference. For me, a Jazz bass simply fits me better, physically, with its body contours and slightly narrower neck. Simple and basic as that. So I'll always prefer a Jazz. If I feel a strong need for a straight up P Bass sound some day, I'll probably build a Jazz Bass with a P Bass pickup configuration. The differences in playing comfort are definitive, for me, though others obviously have different experiences of what's comfortable. So it goes. Different strokes and all that ...
