Arrrggh - Travesty!! ;) The last chord is especially supposed to sound vague so that the cycle feels as if it is going on forever. G9 sus4!

There is actually a coda or ending :

CMaj9 for 2 bars, Ab9sus4 for 2 bars, G9 sus4 for 2 bars and then a resolution to 4 bars of Cmaj9.

If I'd kept up with this, I could have sent you the midi file with the tune - melody as well! I just hope the composer never sees this - he would be very annoyed with me - probably not though, as he is a Sax player !

PS 100bpm is probably a bit slow from the original's point of view for me, but would be OK.

PPS I hope you are all familiar with Mixolydian mode! ;)

Having said all that - I have read though a bit further and can see this getting off the ground. I would really love to contribute a solo, but how do I do it! I have a PC at home, but don't get to it very often and usually log on to TB at work, but this won't be an option for recording bass solos. ;)

I have never recorded on the PC before, as I have tape-based home recording gear and my band has access to a professional studio for demos. So - how do I do it? Can anyone provide a step-by-step guide and what software I could use/download.

I do have Cubase on my PC and have used it for composing, but as it's set up, it only links to midi and I don't know how to get an "analogue" signal, like Bass onto a PC MP3 or WAV file.

well, since this is supposed to be a "trading solos" thing, I wanted some real resolution to the progression.

That mixolydian will work over those sus chords, but I'm having more luck with treating them as minor 9 chords (built off of the 5th) or using ii-V7's over the whole chord.

This is kind of cool, and what I'd like to see happen more, a discussion of the theory behind what we're doing. Rock on.

You could use pentatonic scales built off the II-Vs as you mentioned - sus chords are interesting for improvising as they are ambiguous and don't resolve.

I don't know how you voiced the chords though, not having heard this yet - I've only followed this thread on a PC with no sound capability so far. It's usually the root with a triad built on the chord a whole step below. The interesting thing in this sequence though, is how you move smoothly from one chord to the next - as I was mentioning it is supposed to be a continual flowing thing, that seems to go on for ever without resolving. So the solos are supposed to reflect this. I usually try to find a "lick" that I can just move a semi-tone up or down, just as it's coming to the change. But sometimes I find things where you can actually stay on the same notes across the change - doesn't work for all the transitions though.

I still don't know how I'm going to get my solo added though! :(

Hi guys, I'm working stronger than ever to do this solo.
That's 'cause I have less time than I need (I want a 32
hours day!!!!!!!!). At the moment it is in embrional form,
this is only the note sequence, than I'll apply some effects. I hope you will enjoy it when I'll have finisced.

I finally downloaded the tune. The next challenge is to find time to do something with it. Tis the season to be short of time you know. I haven't had a chance to even think about the approach I'll be taking yet, but when I do I'll share.
P.S. I hope your not in too big of a hurry. With job, family, Xmas and the bands recording project already pressing, it may take a little time to get to.

Well this is on a pretty old Compaq Presario, which is meant to be like a "home" computer and had the sound card built in. I don't use it much as I use computers all day at work, so when I come home I want to do other stuff like play music with other people, so the last thing I want to be doing is messing about with computers for hours at home.

I also have a Yamaha "XG" external soundcard, MU10, which has some great sounds on it, but no facility to record. I use this to compose stuff - that is, it will play synth sounds, drums etc from the sequencer, but I have no facility to record.

how are you guys progressing on this little project of yours? I'm very interested in hearing this =) I would try to pitch in but I don't know enough theory yet =P haven't gotten too far with chords yet.. I'm getting a keyboard for christmas so my teacher can teach me the chords better. well, keep me posted on your progress guys

Is everyone still up for it? Even if I can't come up with anything worthy, I'd like to hear the finished thing. Should be interesting.

I would love to get involved but like a fool I've only just looked up this thread! :(

Is it still going ahead? I tried the mp3 link which failed and I couldn't find it on JT's site.

If it is what's the preferred method of recording the bass tracks? I have got Cubasis VST through an SBLive! on a PII 350 (slow but it was a choice between a new computer and my Eden cab!) I'm not sure if I can play an mp3 on VST and lay down a track that way or if I will have to use something like Wavelab lite while I play along to Winamp.

Any help would be appreciated as this sounds like a project that will be fun and test my abilies at the same time.

Smoothgroover, sorry for not replying to the email but I had trouble getting into Hotmail - nothing too serious though - I hope! . I'm in college at the moment, so I'll try tonight. I can't think how big it is, but it took about 10 minutes to download on my 56k modem on a Saturday afternoon, so it can't be that big.
