REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-III

The Pelican Case has been on back order. Finally arrived today. Nice!

P.S. It took literally five minutes to extract the rectangular foam shapes to fit the REDDI. I laid two rows of excess foam on the bottom to cushion the REDDI, which is why it is slightly elevated in the photo as opposed to a few other pics I've seen in prior REDDI threads. Overall, the weight of the case plus REDDI is heavier than I'd prefer for a DI, but what the heck .... it's a REDDI! Very, very pleased with the clean, pure tube tone of this unit!

It's an [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. Not Reddi specific but a perfect fit. You can't go wrong with any Pelican product. I've had a couple of very positive experiences buying Pelicans online from Invalid Link Removed. Fast shipping, good stock, competitive prices.

Hey guys... I've been having a problem with ground hum when I'm using my REDDI's thru jack to my amp. It varies how prominent the hum is from venue to venue, but it is consistent and always present. Toggling the ground merely reduces the hum, but never eliminates. Lat night it was so bad I nearly unplugged the REDDI and used my DI from my Genz Benz head instead. FOH does not seem to be affected (thankfully), just my rig, which without the REDDI, does not hum.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

First thing: Is your amp and REDDI plugged into the same AC outlets?

Often yes, but the hum still happens when my amp and the REDDI are plugged into separate outlets.

Other obvious trouble shooting: Do all your cables test good? Does the problem exist with other amps?

All cables test good. The amp does not hum unless plugged in via the REDDI THRU jack. I'll make it a point to check with another amp and report back, but I'm wondering if there could be an issue with the THRU jack on the REDDI?

Get yourself a little Whirlwind Pin 1 lifter.

I get that occasionally myself. I guess it's a transformer thing ;) But this has always cleared it up. Just had to use it on my gig earlier tonight. Brought my Heritage SVT and REDDI and we had a monitor system brought in and tied it to the house system and got a little hum. Hooked this up and it was gone. Just remember to snag it first when you pack up if you're renting sound as they tend to walk away if you don't.

It won't do both FOH and your amp, at least not that I've heard. To me it downgrades the sound in the house if you split the signal. And while it can be used in certain power amps as a preamp, it's really not its intended use and doesn't work in every power amp. REDDI's one of those things that does only one thing but it does it better than anything else out there, or at least that's what I believe, so I don't worry so much about what it doesn't do. OTOH, A-Designs does make some preamps and they're pretty nice as well.

Agreed about splitting, but I like the tone of my DI, just like you like the tone of your REDDI, Jimmy. And I do about 50% gigs where I DI to the desk and 50% gigs where I just go through my sweet DI to my amp only in intimate settings.

So that makes the REDDI's lack of effected straight through a complete show stopper for me. I can't believe I'm the only one in this situation.

If the REDDI did an effected straight through I would have bought one for sure.

What amp are you using? Does it have a ground lift switch?

I am using a GB Shuttle 9.2 for this series of gigs. Yes it has a lift, but it is tied to the DI of the amp, so I made the assumption it would have no impact on the hum issue with the REDDI. I'll give it a try at my gig tonight. That would be fantastic if it solved the problem but I'm not sure it will do the trick.

I just ordered one; $19.99 w/free shipping. Seems like a good thing to have tucked in the gig bag as these ground loops pop up at the worst moments when there is no time to mess around with debugging. Thanks for the recommendation!

Limeman,

Try this as well........use the thru on your tuner and see if that helps too.

In my case, it usually is something out of the ordinary going on. Like yesterday, the aforementioned outboard monitor system tied to the house system. We play another place that was built with poor grounding where I'll sometimes get hit. Doesn't happen often but it happens sometimes.

As I understand ground loops, they could also be caused by other players' gear that is powered from the same circuit. Wherever the problem originates, it sounds like Jimmy's Magic Plug will solve it in an instant without having to test every piece of gear.
The only time it didn't work is when my 69 SVT was broken ;)
