REDDI Tube DI Mega Thread . Potential megathread that is.

So I did some testing with the REDDI this weekend and it seems to add a fair bit of gain to the signal (as expected) compared to a radial standard DI. Now I've read here that it doesn't add enough clean gain to be able to drive a poweramp convincingly, is this still the case, or have there been mods to up the gain for that application?

I very much like the clean Ampeg fliptop vibe it gets, plus the added harmonic content and compression :)

can it be more than just a DI?

Also can you run a mic through the REDDI?

Sorry if these are repeated questions, this thread has gotten too long to wade through :)

It starts at unity gain with the input knob at minimum, and adds up to 15 or 16 dB at maximum. To drive a power amp requires between 24 and 50 dB of gain, depending on the signal you feed in, and the sensitivity of the power amp.

I've read alot but not all of the 585 posts.
Is it safe to say that this DI offers a warm tube tonality based on an Ampeg B-15 as opposed to an uncollored tone of something like a Countryman?

Yes, but don't mistake it for "colored." The REDDI is a clean DI with pretty close to flat response from what I can hear, and the Countryman is only flat up to 10k, and then it tapers off gradually as it goes up the highs.

Here's a couple short clips I made comparing the REDDI and Countryman using a couple different basses. To me, the voicings don't sound far off at all except the REDDI's sounds like it doesn't have that tapering off of the highs. And there's just a bigness of presence in the REDDI that the Countryman doesn't have, especially on the high notes.

It is not really a preamp... It can drive a power amp depending on the sensitivity of the input of the power amp itself. I was able to drive a Carvin DCM1500 power amp to an acceptable level but to light the OL light ...the RED clip light........... could only happen if i hit the bass strings almost as hard as I could... The REDDI has about 16dB of gain which i great for the DI thats was designed to be..

You're right Jimmy, they do sound pretty similar but different whether it be through headphones or studio monitors.

If the mission was to get an instrument to sit in the mix with minimal EQ I could see using one over the other based on the bass and the track,
You guys had made this REDDI thing sound like all the other DI's are trash!;)

They are as far as I'm concerned! ;) EQ ain't the only thing going on there, bro. Not saying the Countryman isn't a perfectly usable DI, but nothing I've ever plugged into sounds as good as the REDDI IMHO. There's an authority of tone I could never get with the Countryman or any other DI's.

Fair enough; I personally don't hear much more than a tonal difference but this is a squashed MP3 file that I would think kills some of the complexity and wide soundstage that either of these boxes offer in a professional recording enviornment

I gather many of you guys here a distinct difference in FoH sound in a mid to large room
Curious as to any A/B testing during soundchecks

Just listened again to the MP3's vs the WAV's, and I don't hear a difference. Granted, I don't have the best recording equipment, but I totally hear a difference in gravity of each note, even with the MP3's, which were made with a very high bitrate.

I have been lucky and tried maybe 50 different DIs in the high end market and agree the REDDI has been my mainstay for at least 5-6 years now.. Im a devout follower.. Yes i have drank from the A-Design Koolaide bucket!;)

I was doing a mega church gig that a friend who is also a Grammy winning engineer mixed FOH.. I started the gig with a countryman.. It was AWESOME compared to their house active DI.... I was experimenting and buying gear....So then i moved to the UA Solo 610 .. which they liked more... Then we did an A/B with the REDDI... He told me to not show up to the gig unless i brought the REDDI..:smug: he was joking in a way...
I then sold my UA Solo610 which is a great device unto itself..

Before i sold it i was doing a gig with an engineer that does FOH for Bonnie Raitt... We compared the UASolo610 and REDDI... He is the one that told me to sell the UA610 and only use the REDDI... Those guys both have way better ears than i do...

Jim, all I'll tell you is that if you're happy with a Countryman or Radial, there ain't a thing in the world wrong with that and save your money. But I never was, so I got the REDDI, and now I'm finally happy with using a DI line. Other people's experiences may be different and that's totally valid as well.
