I am looking for verification, but it appears from the postings I'm seeing that sadly, Rick Turner has died.

I've been a huge fan of Rick's work for years... this is a tremendous loss to the world of luthiery at large. Rest in Eternal Peace, RT. Thanks for all your work.

I had an Electroline back in the day, and while it was a well-made, beautiful, high-quality bass, I never really bonded with it. I was fortunate enough to have met Rick a number of times, and I recall talking about this bass and feeling bad that I wasn't in love with it. He was very kind and said something along the lines of "It would be boring if everyone bonded with the same kind of instrument," or something like that. I do recall, however, falling in love with a Renaissance Bass many years ago (but not having the funds to buy it, at the time), so kept my eye open for one for a while, but to be honest, I let it fall off of my radar. With Rick's unfortunate passing, I felt an urge to pick one up, and I found a pretty straight-up example of an RB4 Standard that seemed to call to me a bit, so here it is:
I know that a fretless version would get me more of that "upright bass" tone, but I have a Rob Allen Mouse which nails that, so I definitely wanted a fretted RB4. Really digging it, so far!

I've had this '02 EL for about ten years, now. It's a fine instrument and the peizo is outstanding. As good as it sounds and plays, I don't go to it very often. I was just getting ready to list it the classifieds, but decided doing so might seem a bit crass at this unfortunate juncture. Which is okay 'cos I know I'd probably miss it immediately, and may never find another nice example. RT did one of the nicest burst finishes on this bass that I've ever seen. There's something special about owning a bass designed and built by one of the most iconic, and historically significant innovators of all time.

Hey everybody, OP here...
I'm considering taking a Talkbass hiatus or maybe an exit stage altogether... I'd like to see the Turner Banner here be carried on though, if anyone is interested. I don't guess it's any more official than just store it as a 'Watched Thread' and post something worthwhile every so often to bump it.
I'll probably tag a couple of you in a PM if I decide to close out, maybe swap email to stay in touch.
Y'all carry on, long live Turner/Renaissance Guitars!

I'd hate to see you go, but if you need a break, you need a break. Still, the worthwhile content will be less without you around.
It’s interesting as although I didn’t intend to I recently checked in on TB and realized I hadn’t really been on for almost a year or 2. Sometimes life just goes that way. Oddly after Rick’s passing I found myself logging in as I knew you obviously were going to post and be affected by this. Now I’m glad I kept my fairly rate Walnut RB4 fretted even though my playing situations haven’t really been calling for it’s use. In the last week I have been feeling to falling g to plug that in and enjoy it. I still never got that attachment to help with the neck dive. If you know anyone that has one let me know.
Anyway I realize I’m a bit all over the road but whatever you decide to do nothing has to be permanent as you never know…enjoy!

Rick Turner Guitars suffered a major loss with the passing of our founder, Rick Turner. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming and we appreciate all the good thoughts.
We want to assure all dealers and customers who have pending orders that these will be fulfilled, and it is our full intention to honor Rick by continuing to sell and produce the instruments Rick has so skillfully designed and crafted. For the most part, Rick has not been part of the day-to-day in the shop for some time and, although his absence will be greatly missed, operations will continue.
However, it would be naïve to believe that his absence will not have an impact, so we appreciate your continued support and patience through this difficult time. With the support and involvement of Rick’s family, we remain committed to ensuring the current line of instruments continue to be available as well as to continue with projects Rick had started including the “peanut” made famous by Jerry Garcia and other special releases we had planned for 2022 and beyond.
It's our belief that Rick never fully understood the impact he had not just on luthiers but on music in general. Many artists we hear every day were able to develop their sound using the tools Rick provided them. For this, we should all be eternally grateful. He will be missed.
