Rickenbackers

Well that beautiful 4001 I sold to someone not in the RRF club ... that made a lot of people mad.

Then I sold this bass here to someone not in the club ... I became worse than evil

This is perhaps a tad off subject - but even as one of Rickenbacker's hardcore fans - why is there an ongoing aftermarket demand for better replacement bridges, for better tuning machines, for wiring harnesses, etc?

If I ran Rickenbacker, I'd be offering the classic instruments - but also upgraded models including 5 strings, models with active electronics and super deluxe models too. As I've said before, Ric needs to give me reasons to buy another bass from them

EXCELLENT QUESTION ...

I am glad you asked ...

There are 2 groups of Ric owners ... The purists and the rest of us ...

Yes a lot of sane people own and play Ricks ... we gig them ... we scratch them up ... we modify them

I replied to one thread on Ricks and I was surprised by the dynamics on the topic as the thread continued. I could tell there was some baggage on the topic on talkbass. Some posts seemed antagonistic, and others defensive and/or guarded. It seems like things have hit a point where it's hard to have much a useful dialogue but I'm new here so I could be wrong.

For people like me a bass is a tool ... Rickenbacker, Fender, Musicman are just brandnames

For others the Rickenbacker, or the p-bass or the Stingray are holy relics sent from heaven

There are 2 mindsets that I don't understand ...

1 - the cultist worship defend at all costs mentality

2 - the bash hate the brand and everything about it mentality

like I stated before basses are tools ... we use the tools to make music ... sometimes we modify the tool so it works better for us.

So don't hate because someone chooses a different tool and don't hate because they modify the tool ...

Some people love a 4 string p-bass with flats. I find that kind of bass useless, Don't hate me for not wanting one and I won't hate you for playing one ... if only it were that easy.

That is my problem with Ricks and Rick owners ... I don't hate you for playing a stock 4 so don't hate me for playing a modified 5

I don't hate you for modifying your Ricks. I get annoyed with people who trash talk unmodified Ricks because I love mine unmodified.

Me too - I even miss the pickup cover on my other basses; nice place to rest my hand on when picking.
I also enjoy seeing what great ideas other people have modding their basses. Maybe because I am not modding myself :D

I've played a Ric for 38 years - and the only mod done on it was the 4003 switchable hi-pass. It still looks, plays and sounds fantastic!

I'd leave this bass alone (for sentimental reasons if nothing else).

But my other one? Yeah - I'd think about doing something with it.

I would prefer to just have one with all the things I want such as a more solid bridge, two-band EQ and every bit of shielding that can be installed.
