I had the Bart MMCBJD3 in my bass for a while. I never quite got along with it, but the pickup isn't in the traditional location being further back towards the bridge. It was too thin in that location to really dial in a MM tone. I crafted this image a while back to get an idea about pickup locations. The light yellow lines give an idea where various J+MM basses fit with an actual MM. Note: Images are scaled one to another to avoid the 35" vs 34" differences.

Doesn’t this show the Roscoe is in the MM position? Or am I reading it wrong? Yellow lines are MM right?

Yes'sir. Roscoe used the actual MM position. The Warwicks, the Lakland, and my bass are further back towards the bridge. If I were chasing the MM sound, the MM/Roscoe is the position I would want. I used to have a 3-way switch on the MM for north coil, parallel, south coil and mimic the 60's/70's jazz positions most. All that to say, my time with the Bart (though it's still in my pickup drawer) didn't yield the best results for me. I should also note, there are a few different Bart MM pickup structures. Mine is essentially 2 jazz pickups in one shell.

Roscoeheads, I have a question. I can’t quite seem to get the action on the Century Custom 5J low enough for my taste. The saddles are bottomed out and there is zero relief. It sounds great and no buzz but it’s not quite low enough for me. Especially on the lower strings. I ordered a tapered B string and I think that will help. It may need a shim. I can see the base plate on the model A hipshot bridge is pretty thick too. Any suggestions?

And no I don’t measure the string height as I go as low as I feel comfortable with and there is no buzz and the notes all ring out. I have a light touch and let the bass and amp do the work. My Lakland sets up beautifully and I would think that the Roscoe should be just as good if not better

Yeah, that’s true I guess. Maybe I need to quit looking at Roscoe’s and be happy with the pair I have. I’m just not in a place where I can afford them. The two I have cover a lot of ground already. P w/flats and the 5.
