Roscoe Club

Surprise, surprise!!!

Good ole' James strikes again ..........

In the past (prior to my last order) I was able to remove the star washer and nut (inside) and then was able to get them to tighten down sufficiently. If you've already tried that ....... then good luck!

You could always use the router to thin up the distance between the top and the inside wall ......... :D

Right, but I don't want to screw around with that and get things to where I have to send the bass to Roscoe to fix my big blunder. Right?

I hate that for you man, especial after waiting that long. I know when I sent my Cocobolo Roscoe to Keith to swap electronics and Plek I really wanted the Demeter put in. Keith was adamant against me using it and told me the reason he quick stocking and using their products was he had so many issues with them. Said his last batch he got that a very high percentage of them was faulty in some way or another. He definitley wasn’t height on them.

Well, I'll spend the additional $15 for the correct pots and install them, but I'll keep the Bartolini just in case I have issues with the Demeter. The funny, sad thing about this is not all the pots were the same thread height! Priceless!!!

I need a 25K vol and two 250K Alpha control pots. If you have those I'll trade a very nice 3 1/2 inch brown Levy's leather strap for them?

The Demeter pre uses 100k pots and I have 3 100k with center detent. I also have 1 25k pot. All have 3/8” of thread. Is that long enough? The leads have been tinned. Not sure if they’ve ever been used.

I got a little free time this morning so I tweaked the setup on my Roscoe fretless (after having installed the Type A bridge on it).
No noticeable difference in the sound but it sure is easier/safer changing out the strings. I strung it up E-C and re-recorded a Bass Orchestra tune that I did 5 years ago (with lots of fretless parts in the upper register). Fun trying to play in tune on the high C in the upper register!
Love the sound of the Diamondwood fingerboard.

Anyone tried/played their Roscoe through the following amps?
Aguilar AG700
Mesa Subway 800-D
Thoughts?
Thanks for the input.

Have not tried the Aguilar, but the Mesa D800 and Roscoe is a match made in heaven. Huge, thick, articulate...it just has a heft and beef to it that I've not heard in other 800 watt Class D amps. Plus like Roscoe, they are fully made in the USA! Mesa also has the best warranty in the biz..5 years transferable.

Like I said, this is a first for me. In our IEM’s it sounded great. Not sure about FOH. I know I’m usually eq’ed pretty flat. I didn’t find it muddy in my ears. The other guys liked it a lot. I’ll keep experimenting. I have always thought too much bass was not good, but I wonder sometimes if I went too far the other way. I’ve never felt my tone was full and lots of bottom. I’ve always had a lot of definition or clarity but I think sometimes at the loss of booty shaking bottom.

That's a classic tone on soooo many recordings. . What sounds muddy is when everyone talks at once, not leaving sonic space for individual voices to be heard and recognized by listeners.

As a sidebar, has anyone checked out the Darkglass Tone Capsule onboard preamp? Three bands (bass@70hz, low mids@500hz, and high [email protected]) with no dedicated treble frequency band. Thinking of all this, mid-scooped bass is where the mud fest predominately happens. No shortage of treble there. . or mud.

I had it in my Zon fretless. It worked well on a fretless. Not so sure how it would work on a fretted. I guess it would depend on your style of playing.

A bit late to post about this, but it's finally close to "done" for now. I had this fretless CS4J made for me back in 2012. I later sold it with no regret, but having sold my other fretless and still having a fondness for it when I saw it come up for sale I had to contact the seller. We were able to work out a deal, and I had him send it to Roscoe for a once over and PLEK.

When I got it back from them it played better than ever. I subsequently have swapped out electronics for a set of Nordstrand Big J-Blades (warm and wooly wind) and Nordstrand 2B preamp + V/V/T controls. It sounds fantastic and I couldn't imagine a more perfect fretless to have.

If anyone is looking for a killer fretless, this one is up for sale. Only letting it go as I have a chance to get a bass (another Roscoe) I've been following for some time, and the fretless doesn't get the playing time it deserves.

Can't remember if I've shared this before or not. This video is a Roscoe with Nordstrand Big Singles and an Aguilar preamp. I have a Bart preamp. I have thought about different pups - from these to dual coil with switches. I really like the tone in this clip.
Back when I had my bass built, I thought I'd have to back out and Greg wanted to put jazz pups instead of the soapbars. They continued with the build the way I ordered it. Now part of me wonders if Greg was right and this should have been a "jazz" bass. Until Roscoe I played mostly jazz basses. Makes me wonder sometimes about trying Big Singles or something similar. I do like hum canceling but I wonder if that kills some of the great tone that single coils have? I generally run both pups equal so the hum isn't usually an issue.

I have been lurking here for a couple of months and recently picked up a Century Std (Bart soap bars and Bart preamp). It's a great bass. It seems that with all of the clarity on tap with these, that string choice is a huge thing. I found a good sound favoring the neck pickup with the stock XL's that were on it. However, I had a set of GHS Round Core Boomers on hand that really seem to tick all of my boxes for feel and tone.

Anyone else playing with these?
