Roscoe Club

No regular on this forum has any right to mock the addictions of anyone else’s on this forum. We’re all sick. :)

@SteveC did you not see the thread on compressors by @scubaduba? Some of us are sick but that was an addiction, if I every saw one!! Must be nice to have money and be single!! :D
I didn't think to check to see if he had one for sale before I bought one.

Truth.

Anyone here considering selling/trading their Roscoe 6 for a Roscoe 5er? I may have something coming up where I could use a 6.

This guy has a 5 string Roscoe one of his trade options. He pulled his ad, but he did that before too. Not that I’ve been paying attention.

No longer available - RED DEVIL Roscoe Century 3006j

Plus then this bass would be closer to me and I could check it out :D

I guess I missed it. But compressors are (relatively) inexpensive to flip. Basses on the other hand...shipping cost alone are preventative. When I was really flip I f basses I sold one while it was en route to me. That is bad.

You really need to check it out even if adding a compressor is not what you want to do!! The work and dedication are paramount! I really like the way his reviews were worded, too.

So @scubaduba, do you do reviews on the regular?

Oh, and @SteveC your are right about flipping a bass en route to you!!

I have it set up pretty well, although it has that tight truss rod opening, so I haven’t quite got it dialed in. My brother has access to a grinder at work, when I see him I’m going to get a few 9/64” hex wrenches ground down for it.

The sound is good- not as “growly” as my SKB with the wenge ‘board, but the body shape works better for me. The Century neck does seem thicker though- the nut width is close (1.81” vs 1.83”), and the 24th fret is the same width. I haven’t measured the front to back depth pf the necks yet, but it is interesting. The Century neck isn’t unplayable, by any means, but the SKB neck reminds me of my ‘74 Fender Jazz... maybe I should just swap them ;)
My Roscoe Signature seems to have a thicker neck than my other SKB Custom. It’s different of course with the matching back and larger reverse triangle taper Purple Heart center

Love the pic! Beautiful collection.

I've still yet to check out a Roscoe Classic. As much as I'm loving the "return to basic basses" journey these days I really should check one out. Maybe I can work out a rendezvous with Freddy-G to check one out.

How about it Gary?

Sure, Joe, I’m sure we can work that out. I didn’t realize you haven’t played a Classic. Mine is a 5-string JJ, with a Darkglass Tone Capsule pre, which I don’t think was installed at the Shop. I keep meaning to ask Keith for a copy of the Roscoe letter of authenticity to verify the original components.

I was hesitant about the Darkglass pre, since it has no treble control, and has separate high and low mid controls (along with stacked v/v and bass control). But, I think it sounds great. It’s not everyday you come across a 35” scale J bass. But I would love to hear your opinion on the playability and sound. Maybe you could make a recording with it, since I’m not set up to do that right now.

Was interested to hear that Keith isn't a fan of Darkglass preamps, but Rick (the electronics guy) is. Keith really likes Bartolini and Aguilar (no surprises there).

I guess Bart/Barts are Roscoe players favorite?
That is the consensus among fretless players, from what I have observed, and my own experience.
There's more diversity on the fretted side.
I have an Aggie/Aggie fretted 5 and I like it fine. Would I have liked the Barts it was originally built with better? I expect I'll never know. Someone before me liked the Aggie combination better and I have no reason to change. Bartolini pickups in my 3007 - but then there's not a lot of competition in the 7-string market ;-)

So far, I've liked other combos better, but it could've been the wood in combination with the Barts. I've really taken a liking to the Aguilar JJ/OBP-1 in my current Century 5, though I really just leave it set flat 99.9% of the time.

But, the more I play the Century 5, the more I want to add a typical soapbar pup Roscoe back into my mix and maybe even give the Roscoe Bart/Bart combo a try again.

I had the best luck with the Bart/Bart combo with a one piece myrtlewood body....so I'd suggest a bodywood that is a bit harder like alder, medium ash, maple or similar. That would give you the benefits of the Roscoe Bart electronics but with more of an immediate reaction to the notes.

Thanks! I had a SKB 5 with the Roscoe Bart/Aguilar OBP-3 combo before - ash body and Wenge fretboard (sapwood, though I wouldn't think that would matter much over regular Wenge). Changed the Barts out for Nordstrand Big Singles and liked the bass much better.

The only bass I've had that was Roscoe Bart/Bart had a Spanish Cedar body and I don't think I'm a fan of that body wood. I'd like to try Bart/Bart with an ash body if I go that route again.
