S/D-85: Tasty clippings from Corey's Box

I've been really wanting to try the new(er) Fretless VM P Bass that Squier is making. It looks beautiful, and for a $250 Fretless Precision, i could probably live with not having real ebony or a "nicer" name on the label.

And sort of piggy-backing on ampegfuzz's question, has anyone in here tried the any of the lighter weight modern tube amps in a doom setting? Specifically the YBA300 or the VB-3? I really want to go back to tubes, but I'm sort of hesitant to go back to an SVT since no one ever helped me carry it last time and I am tiny.

I dont have experiance with the lighter tube amps, but what I do know is that OT can be a limiting factor (like in Mesa amps). So unless they do something special like the VB-3, light weight can spell light tone.

Of course YMMV and you should give them a listen for yourself. I still think it is worth dragging a 100 pound tube around.

Close to tube sounding but kinda muddy, look at a terror bass. For tube and sounds good and won't break your back? New mesa and fender bassman? Invalid Link Removed

Yeah, the intro riff is fantastically heavy. As others mentioned, definitely reminiscent of Converge. And that's a damn good thing.

Definitely thought of them as 4 separate songs....great foundation for each.

Thanks man. I've never been huge into Converge, I've owned a couple albums. So any similarity is coincidental, but I appreciate the compliment. I'm still mulling over how I'm going to move forward with that project. I'm strongly leaning towards taking the first song or the first two and write more around those. I did spend all day watching/listening to Kurt's recording seminar. Almost everything he's said lines up closely with my own philosophy and experience with recording, with some exceptions due to practical differences in our working environments (and amount of professional success, obviously lol). I dig his attitude/approach.

Definitely a compliment. Kurt's one of my favorite bassist and you nailed the grind and feel, even if accidental.

If my SVT didn't weigh well over half as much as me, or i was a little bit bigger/stronger, i would have never sold it. As it is, i can convince people to help me carry 8x10s and other huge cabs, but everyone always refused to help me schlep that monstrosity of a head. But oh dear i loved that sound. It came time to move and i needed extra cash and wasn't in a band anymore anyway, i sold it.

I'm not adverse to solid state, I'm running an old peavey ss head right now and while it is great for certain things, it just doesn't take pedals quite as nicely to my ears. I'd looked at the new Bassman, a lot of people seem to love it from what i've read.

I will definitely check out the Bass Prodigy if i get a chance. I've heard bad things about the YBA200 and the VB-2 (in the stoner/doom threads, even), but couldn't find anyone in here who'd had the yba300. Good to know about the Peaveys though. (I kind of have a soft spot for Peavey, given their history of basically throwing themselves at the "broke-as-hell metalheads" like me).

Well, if you're not opposed to solid state and want a good pedal platform I would suggest the Hartke LH1000. It'll do 1100W @ 4 ohms, weighs between 40-50 lbs and can be found for cheap. It has one 12AX7 in the preamp, which lends a little warmth, but the it doesn't sound like an all tube head. It's clean all the way up. It loves pedals, too.

Those are both great suggestions. Thank you! I think i do want tubes, but if i can find either of those items in a store to try out, maybe i'll bring in my bass and pedals and see how they sound.

And oh dear those Dunwich pedals have me drooling. I have been looking for something to complement my Pharaoh... (ugh ugh ugh, never stop wanting gear)
