SBMM Stingray Short scale

Mmmmmayyyybeeee...... I think the Blue Magic has just a little more green in it than I would like but i would love to be able to decide in person. Yknow. In case I hate the pink. I would have loved the starry night if it had maple FB instead of rosewood; I think the metalflake colors yield the ultimate Flea bass look - like the old stingray and the Modulus FU got together.

I think I might have to join you with the pink one. I’m def gonna consider swapping the necks between them once I have them both because I’ve always thought the starry night would look better with a maple board or ebony board.

I also agree the blue magic has a hint too much green in it for me that I think would work for it if it had the darker roasted maple to better compliment/contrast the color. Honestly I think the lighter maple would have worked better on the pink but I’m happy it’s the roasted as I think it makes it look a bit more aggressive.

I’m going to have to check out all these new colors! It looks like some more new ones came out and I’ve only seen the hot pink.

On another note, do most of you guys settle in on one particular tone setting and stick with it? Or are you constantly moving the wiring selector knob and push pull pot around? I’m finding that I really only like parallel and single coil, and my favorite setting is parallel with the volume boost on. It’s not that I like the higher output, but rather I find the tone to be a little different.

Yes, I tend to like a particular tone from any particular instrument. For this one, I think it's parallel with the volume boost off. But I try different settings sometimes, because I may like something else on a different day.
:D

I like to fiddle. I am surprised at how much I like the single coil mode but I like all three modes. I have no use for the volume boost. In fact to me it just sounds like someone holding a megaphone up to the speaker. A lot of background noise when that’s on. Maybe some folks like that but it does nothing for me.

I should point out that I didn’t like the volume boost until I lowered the pickup. Since the “volume boost“ is actually just a lack of volume cut, I wanted to actually hear what the pickup sounded like in it’s unaltered state and adjust it from there. A nice side effect is that if I switch to series mode, I can engage the volume cut and have a pretty balanced output between all three modes.

Interesting. I don’t think I’ll be lowering the pup though. I’m happy with where it is.

Trying to decide if I should change the strings or not.

I switch between the setting with the knob turned toward the neck (is that called parallel?) and the middle position (series?). I alternate between those with the push knob on and off. I think I usually prefer it off unless I really need a quick volume boost at band practice because it slightly muffles my tone with the gear I use. I think it really depends on the amp and other pedals that are being used though. I think strings play a huge role as well. For the moment, I'm using some worn-in D'Addario nickel rounds. Thinking about getting some Chromes soon since I don't mind the rounds being old and dulled. Hesitant to spend the money though since I'm not sure if it will dull the tone more than I want.

I'm constantly torn between parallel and series. I tend to like parallel more at home, and series in my loud punk band. Volume 'boost' on, it may be in my head but it feels like when the knob is pushed in, something's lost tonally. It's also great for pushing distortion/fuzz.

I like that red shorty as it is, I wish it were available in full size 4H and 4HH Special. I'm not digging the new colors so far on the full size Rays, I like last year's colors much better but some of the short scale colors are calling my name. The new Sterling short scale copper color is off putting to me, they best up their game.

ya that copper isn’t doing it for me. I hope they plan on more Sterling colors.

It's funny, I don't normally like single coil tone on bass (exact opposite on guitar though!), but I fell in love with it when I first played it. When I was first playing at home, the only setting I didn't care for was the series. But lo! When a friend and I got together to do some recording, series worked perfectly for what we were doing! Suffice it to say I am always fiddling at this point, and I haven't even gotten to play live with a band yet.

I feel like the series mode is a bit overpowering when you're practicing at home, sometimes - but really shines in a mix. Something about that setting just works for me when there's loud drums and guitars in the room.

Could be useful if you use an overdrive or fuzz pedal? Maybe even if you want harder compression?

It wouldn't be my first choice for something a bass would have, but in those instances above it could have some use.

I tried it with a pedal the other day, yes I think if you were going for melt your face off fuzz/distortion it would be that extra kick. But that's not what I do. I honestly think they were just looking to add something since it's a passive bass and people expect active features since it's a StingRay.

I like my daphne blue short scale a lot but if there is one thing that really bugs me it is the mediocre fret work. I guess it's about as poor what came on my Squier Vintage Modified 60's P bass. The thing is the fret work on my made in China Squier Paranormal Jazz is excellent. Not to the same simply perfect standards as on my EBMM 4H Special but still way better than on my Sterling shorty. If they can get that sorted out, put better tuners on it even if they have to raise the price a bit and then get some dashing colors out there (the new copper color is just not doing anything for me) they will have another hit on their hands. Otherwise I'd much prefer to go the route of the EBMM next time not having to deal with fret fixing and future component upgrade decisions.
