The best way I can describe it is exactly halfway between a Fender P or J bass (all passive) and an Ibanez Soundgear (all active).
The Fenders will thump loud, but they lack the ability to really customize your tone with EQ settings. You're basically stuck dialing in right amounts of volume on the pickups, and that's as close as you can get.
With all active stuff, you have a lot more options, but that's a dual-edged sword so to speak. It's easy to go overboard on EQ settings (Fieldy of Korn, for example), and sometimes you don't even need it.
Basically, I'm kind of on the fence with this bass right now. The pickups seem pretty tame, despite being EMGs. I typically have to have the bass EQ cranked to full all the time and the treble at at least half to get a decent tone. Even then, I still can't get the crystalline highs like I would like to hear.
If you can imagine putting a bass and treble EQ onto a Fender sounding bass, that's about what you'll get with this setup. It's definitely a different animal than what you're used to if you haven't played it before, so be sure you have your expectations in the right place if you get one.
