Schroeder Cabinets ... smart design = very compact ! (regular and lights)

Cab: 1210
Purchased Dec/04.
Advertised weight: 47 lbs
Bathroom scales weighing experiment result: 29 kg (64 lbs)

For doublecheck I weighted GB-440 amp - 7 kg (15,5 lbs) - that seems correct.
Anyway, with these scales is a chance it adds weight - that's probably why I always think my advertised weight is much less.

Well, Saturday I visited The Chicago Bass Club in Alsip, IL with my trusty Mod VJ4 and the sole intention of finding out what the hype was all about. I must say that Jorg's cabinets are indeed worthy of the praise. I tried a 1210, a 1212, 101012, and a 410. I felt that 410 would probably work best for me and I also thought that it sounded the best to my ears inside the store.

So I got home on Saturday and was able to talk my wife into jamming with me for a while (she's a drummer) and the 410 paired with my Aguilar AG-500 sounded fantastic. I'm not sure if it is Jorg's design or what but I think that this is the fullest sounding 410 I have ever heard. It still has the punchiness you would expect of a 410 but there is also something special happening that is hard to put your finger on. A warm sort of dispersion that just makes these cabs unique. I can't really explain it. It may be the emphasis of the low mids or just the design of the cabinet but whatever it is, it's great! The 410 really fills the room. Tomorrow night I'll get to try it with a full band and I will try to report back here with my review.

Also, I want to add that I really enjoyed my visit to The Chicago Bass Club. It is a great little store that sells Aguilar, Schroeder, Eden, Accugroove, Lakland, Modulus and other mid to high end gear. Mark, the owner is a friendly and helpful guy who is also a player. It is located in Alsip, IL on Cicero, just south of the Guitar Center.

Congrads. At the risk of sounding too positive...my guess is you're gonna notice even more of whatever "mojo" you experienced in the store once you get in a practice area or gig with the Schroeder. I have a 410 and every gig so far I've taken to has almost been overkill!!! It seems to sound better and better as the rooms get larger and/or crappier acoustically. I noticed a significant differece moving the cabinet from my practice room in my condo which is about 12x13 to my living room/dining room area which is about 22x17+. I then used it at a practice actually in a garage (a large one, probably equivalent of a four car garage in an L shape) and it was so awesome. Then we moved to real gigs, a couple outdoor festivals a couple really crappy sounding rooms, and a couple medium sized bars. The 410 sounding AMAZING in all of these situations...but, bottom line, I didn't need that much stage volume at the two medium size bars and will use my 1210 there the next time we play at these places (in November and early Dec respectively).

I also had casters put on mine and have again found that to be an advantage...There's plenty of bass as you heard, coming outta that cabinet. I feel that the little extra lift off of the stage/floor and lessening the area of contact points also helps to make the bottom end more controllable in a poor acoustic setting.

Please keep us posted....what are you using for a head by the way?

Thanks, Larry. I am using an Aguilar AG-500 and it sounds fantastic. I was leaning toward the 1212 but the 410 sounded better to me. If I ever need more power (which I really doubt would happen) I could always buy a louder amp but I doubt I'll ever need more cab.

I play in an AC/DC tribute band (Bon Scott era) but most of the music that I write and record on my own is more in the R&B, Soul, Funk vein. I bought the amp because i felt it would be able to do both quite well and so far i haven't been disappointed. I can't wait to hear the Schroeder with two Marshall half stacks!

Well, it probably will be overkill for me too. 99% of my gigs have PA support but it's good to know that if there is ever a need for volume, I'll have it in spades. I like headroom.

I find that very interesting.
The *only* complaint I have to date with either my 1210 or 410 came from this weekend. I made the move to Schroeders because when I started playing DB, I couldn't hear myself on stage no matter hwo much horsepower and cabs I brouight with me. The magical Schroeder omniprecense on stage solved that, and most of my feedback problems.
This weekend, playing my Lakland Hollowbody strung with flats in a large, crowded room, square in shape, with all hard walls and floors, the Lakkie would not cut thru, even with the bass trimmed a little, and TFB's enhance q'd a little to the right...a trick that usually solves all my "mud a clarity problems."
I should have tried de-coupling from the floor...I will if there's a next time, but so far this has been a singular case.

Which cabinet were you using this past weekend? If it was the 1210, I've tried turning it 10incher pointed up and that helps a great deal. Have you ever tried that?

I've frankly never played an upright or hollow body anybass through my systems, so I don't know. I do remember in one of those room elcrappo supremo's I could not hear my Lakland 5594 with two EA 208's and 1200 watts going through them. This system had about as much a cutthrough tone as one can have on stage...unfortunately, it didn't have room booty and bottom projection except in the shallowist, smallest of bars we played at that time.

I wonder if it's your bass not being "condusive" to those kinds of acoustics and your system, Schroeder or not or a great head or not, just is amplifying in their own way what's coming into the head. I found the key in those rooms is you gotta find a way to turn up more without rumbling and being too loud on stage, without cutting the bottom so much you almost sound like a guitar player's low e string on the other. It's a tough balancing act, but getting the bottom a little higher off the floor with the 410 and turning the 1210 on it's end to cut down the floor contact might do the trick for you as a first fix. Then try cutting down the bottom and turning your head up to compensate. Remember not to totally wipe out your tone under 100 hz!!!! try cutting acouple of db outta whatever adjustments you have on your bass and amp at 100 / 125 and down, increase your preamp volume to compensate for a lesser input signal (if you have an active bass) and increase your master volume with active or passive bass and see what the heck happens.

As you know , there's no perfect answer here. Let us know what works or doesn't work for you. The above works for me......................uh, most of the time!!!

Hey LK;
Actually, this was the first time I've ever used the 1210 "laying down," I do usually put it standing tall. I've not had troubles with the Lakkie sound muddy in other rooms. I was using a TFB420, and rolled the enhance towards treble some, rolled the low bass off some, rolled some at about 40 hz off some, and had two para mids flat, some 4khz boost, and some top end treble rolled in. Some rooms are just a be-atch like that. I attribute this to hollowbody+flats+really crappy room...though standing the 1210 up or decoupling might have helped...instead:
I switched to a Reverend 5L with new nickel rounds on for second/third set, no more problems, with everything set back to flat.

I typically do both...
Run the DI out of my TFB or Eden, and mic as well, let the sound guy have his choice or ability to blend...mic by the edge of the speaker, kinda pointing towards the center of the cone...front facing speaker, not side firing.

It'd be interesting to see what Jorg says about mic placement, I'll email him...

If there's any way to have the 1210 horizontal/long ways on the floor, I feel that it's the "natural" position of the cabinet. I've had four instances....two where even saving 7 inches of backline stage room was necessary, and two where I heeded to hear myself better.

In retrospect, I "shoulda" cut the bottom down slightly, upped the preamp volume and up the master or, at least in the two rooms where I couldn't hear me that clearly, I now take the 410 and there's no problem :D

The 1210 in my mind sounds much fuller and phatter on the ground horizontal, but I'm finding that I don't need, even in a good acoustically setting, to boost the bottom too much if at all past flat and that the cabinet, if you don't overdrive the low end completely, really really puts out a great tone at high volumes if you can avoid overrevving the speakers with 40-80 hz dubbing kinda tone. It still sounds plenty bottomy without overboosting, obviously depending on your bass and several other factors.

I did some recording in my home studio last night. I used a Blue Kickball about 8-10" from the top, front firing 10 and it sounded fantastic. I had the mic facing slightly off center from the cone. Best recorded bass tone I have ever had! I will try to mix down a sample and post it today or tomorrow.

This is tough
I'm trying to find anything about the schroeder's (1210) that ISN'T great.....so far, I'm coming up empty handed.

I really need to get a small compact cab for small gigs and rehearsals, but am admittedly torn between an eden 210 and a schroeder 1210....

And nowhere has a 1210 that I can try, I may need to buy to try.

decisions !

Been a looooooooong time since I've posted in this thread. It's so massive I can't keep up with it! I can't tell you anything negative about the 1210 either, and Jorg is literally the best to deal with -- so helpful it's unbelievable. I had a 1210 a while back but had to sell it because I didn't have any gigs that required so much firepower. I'll soon have another :D because I now have a gig worthy of the Schroeder's reputation! :bassist:

Where are you located? You can try mine out when it arrives, although it may be a little while. I hear these Schroeder cabinets are catching on and getting a bit popular. . .

Jorg is located in Colleephoneeeah somewhere right? There are not that many dealers nationally. I know it can be a pain in the butt to do an over the weekend try out or a 7 day if offered, but, with all the great press and what seems to be (I could be wrong...maybe there's more people than we think who don't LOVE the cabinet....gotta put this caveat in so that I don't come across with faulty logic here, ok?) only a very very very small portion of the reviews, posts, comments, etc. etc. that have anywhere from slight to nothing more than "it's just not my sound" type of negative words on the cabinet...why not just get it, if you have the money, and see if we're all nuts or whether you just may fall into the small group who isn't enthralled? But, by all means call Jorg and make sure the 1210 is the "right" or "best" one in his mind for your particular application/shlepp and volume factor, etc. etc.

That's of course unless you can physically visit a dealer who's got them in stock? (not too many) or if there's someone in your area who's willing to let you check their's out. Your post didn't say where you live...so...where the heck do you live? Maybe we can match you up to someone who's already bought one in your area.

Had both. Sold the Eden. It's heavier, carries less watts, and it's [probably] not as loud.

Loving the 1210 (and 1212) more every day!

Would be glad to let you play thru it if you were even (moderately) close.
