I've seen a few posts indicating the ThunderFunk amps are under-rated. That is, they seem to put out more power than they're rated at. (They're just louder, given the same rating.) For guitars anyway, I've always believed a "Mesa Boogie" watt is louder than a "Peavey" watt. I have an SWR SM400 (bridged: 420w @ 4-ohms/400w @ 8-ohms). How accurately are the SWR amps rated (under, over, close, etc.) - compared to a ThunderFunk 420? Anyone A/B'd a TF420 (I'm asssuming it's about 420w) to an SWR SM400? Would the SM400 have enough power to get the "best" out of the 1210/1212s? Better suited with the Regulars or Lights (lower rating)? Which would you choose? Or would this be a bad or less-than-adequate combination? Anyone?

Is matching up the SM400 to a 121X just a bad idea? Are the old SWR amp any "better" or differenct than the newer ones? Anything akin to the Fender "vintage voodoo" thing? My hit-or-miss (mostly miss) experience with the old Fender basses is just that - they're old. I've come to realize that just because it's old doesn't mean it's better.

:help:

I the SWR and the older Thunderfunk 420, the Thunderfunk is easily louder!

I've noticed that there is relatively little input, regarding folks who've used an Ashdown RPM-1, w/ a 1212 or 1210.

Can anyone give me some impressions on how well this combination works?
I would say its pretty much the same as using a ABM head with the Schroeders and a few of us have that combination and have talked about it in this thread.

I'm going to be in L.A. tomorrow and Friday and was hoping to find a 310212 in stock somewhere to try out(no dealers in my area). I e-mailed Jorg to find out and never got an answer from him. On top of that, the phone number for the dealer listed on his webpage for the L.A. area came back "not in service" when I called it last week. Any ideas?

There's a cali dealer with an ad up on bassgear.com right now that says he has the whole line in stock

Hey guys,

This might sound familiar... I need a pair of portable cabs to run in stereo at 4 ohms each with my Stewart World 1.2.

I will run my basses AND my keyboard sequences thru it. Right now I use a pair of Avatar 1x12 cabs. They work but are too big and heavy and the tweeters sound nasty.

ACME B1s were suggested in the past but I know they will not be loud enough.

The bottom line: beefy enough for bass, loud enough, portable, acceptable tone for PA.

Might a pair of Mini 12+ handle this with acceptable PA tone?

Thanks,
Tom H.

Last I knew he doesn't stock the 3101212 though. He might now though. I talked with him briefly about it when I was there.
That's quite possible. It's not a huge store. I was mostly interested in the 21012 Lite anyway, and I think he has/had that one, at least, and I think 1212's, and 1210's. Not sure about others.

I hooked up my Acoustic 360 & 370 to my 1212 'heavy' last night and it was an amazing thing :bassist:
I got my Schroeder 410 a few monthes ago,and I have not been as happy:) and excited :hyper: about my sound since the magical day that my own Acoustic 360 pre-amp head with two Acoustic 361 powered cabinets were delivered in 1970...in fact, the Schro 410 really reminds me of the "Acoustic sound" with 4 ten inch speakers, instead of the reverse mounted 18" Cerwin Vega, the way the Schro's rear-angled speakers cut thru the mix,the cab's overall volume, built like a tank, but even better tone:smug: (IMHO)...no GAS here...:D

Has anyone done an A/B comparison using a cheaper head and a boutique head on a Schro cab?? if so, did you notice a difference in tone?

Perhaps this was already covered in the thousands of posts in this thread. Anyone tried a Schro with oh I dunno...a behringer head for example and then tried it with an Aguilar DB750 or Thunderfunk? Any big difference in tone? :hiding:

I apologize in advance if I am beating the dead horse here guys...

hahahaha

Yeah, we all wish it were that easy.

I want to use the phrase "you get what you pay for" but that isn't necessarily appropriate or true.

Fact is quality is quality. You're obviously going to notice a quality difference when using a behringer then a top end amp. You'll notice a difference also if you played a OLP through one and then a Sadowsky through a schroeder.

These cabs aren't the holy grail to tone. They're a piece of the puzzle.

.....Think of it as a nice corner piece....with these you generally know you've got yourself a good starting point ;)

I don't completely understand when people set their minds on pointing to one's cabinet as seemingly being the main or only culprit for someone's tone problem.

A for instance....there was someone here a few hundred posts back that couldn't get his Thunderfunk/Schroeder combination sounding "good" and because what appears to be a total "acceptance" of Thunderfunk as about as "holy grail" a status as any bass head seems to have these days, this guy's tone had to be a Schroeder / cabinet issue. Turned out he didn't have too much of a clue about how to make the TFunk sing its tune properly.

Another bassist I know said to me that his bass's B string wasn't as loud as the other strings, therefore that's a sign of the fundamental dropping off drastically in the cabinet. Well, maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but my bass's B string doesn't have any less a volume than the other strings. Maybe it's his amp's response to the low b just isn't as "true" as mine, or maybe he's not hitting the string quite as "hard" or maybe, the B string is slightly older and not as resonant as the other strings, or maybe, he's not sitting in the "right" spot in the room to accurately evaulate this factor.

I just put new pickups in my Mike Lull M5V, same brand as original, but humbuckers. The guitar tech set the pups much closer to the strings than the OEM setup. The new pickups in my opinion not only give me a hum free pickup blend option, they sound much tighter and cleaner and give my B string much more punch than before. So here's yet another factor, not directly related to the speakers, that have a profound effect on the tone coming outta them an adjustment anyone can make with a 1/4 turn of screw or nut.

I agree in principle that you should get more if ya pay more, but that doesn't mean that someone can't get great tone with less invested. You would "expect" that the Aggie 750 head would be "better" sounding than a 450 watt Behringer, but I'll bet dimes to donuts that with the right combination of other factors, you can make the Behrie sound just as good if not "better' (subjective of course).

There's been a lotta guys I've heard live that sound great with a Mexican Fender and a Peavey TNT 115 and I've heard several others with a $2500+ bass and $7500 worth of heads and speakers (including Victor Wooten three times) sound like crappola live. He needs a couple of 310212's, maybe a different head, maybe a different bass....we know it's not the player don't we????

Just because someone has what others consider to be a "holy grail" rated bass, like a Sadowsky, or a top rated head like the Aguilar 750 or TFunk 550, just fur instance, or whether they have a Schroeder AccuGroove, Bergie, or Epi, that it doesn't automatically mean they're gonna have cool tone.

I owned what might be the one Sadowsky bass that had absolutely no bite to it......or was it I didn't know how to set up my amp head properly to take advantage of the quality of that bass (the best finished neck I've ever played)? Or maybe the pickups needed to be adjusted 1/32 of an inch closer to the strings and I wasn't astute enough to realize that's the adjustment I needed to make? or maybe my speakers at the time, which were severly "scooped" depressed the mids and low mids so much I was left with not nearly enough punch and cleanliness.

My opinion because of that experience then.....Sadowsky's are not what people say they are...I'm not a believer. Today.....If I knew then what I know now.....it probably wasn't entirely the fault of that bass. Schroeder cabs have a different tonal response than most other cabinets out there. You have to "like" how that response effects YOUR tone, but before you say, as a very very small minority have said here and to me directly, that the Schroeder's aren't for me because of their this or that factor.......

Don't be so quick to single out the Schroeder or for that matter "blame" any one component of a system as the only or main "problem" tonewise. But keep in mind there's just some components that seem to give the majority of it's users an acceptable, satisfactory cornerstone towards our tone quests.
