I don't completely understand when people set their minds on pointing to one's cabinet as seemingly being the main or only culprit for someone's tone problem. ...
Larry, I know you're a Schroeder dealer and a huge fan (which is perfectly cool, and I'm a fan as well), but it really is ok for someone to just not like the cabs... it doesn't always mean they just don't know how to use the rest of their equipment. :)

The bottom line: beefy enough for bass, loud enough, portable, acceptable tone for PA.

Might a pair of Mini 12+ handle this with acceptable PA tone?

How demanding are your keyboard patches? How much EQ do you have available? I've tried my 1210 for guitar synth, it's not bad at all. OK for vocals too, but takes a bit of EQ to get where I like it. I've never heard the Minis, can't answer that part. The EA CxL-112 works really well for both bass and PA and gets fairly loud though.

You might also want to look into the Avatar crossover upgrade. That's cheap and could be all you really need?

I feel that you can't just look at the cabinet (or head, or preamp or bass...no matter what brand), even if the other components seem to sound "good" with everything else. It's a systems issue....I'm not saying that the Schroeder is for everyone.....go get a new head and bass if you have to!!

The Schroe's overall offer their strengths and a unique combination, at this juncture, of several features that I no longer can discuss on the forum. If someone doesn't find the set of features important enough to "overcome" perhaps not loving the perceived tone produced, again an opinion shared by only a very small minority of bassists, especially if they've actually used them ON THE GIG, that's fine. I understand completely, I have no issues or trouble accepting that.

However, having now "shared" my cabinets with almost 2 dozen other players here in the Cleveland area, not one of 'em has said anything about mid burp or low mid whatever, or crappy uncomfortable tone. The biggest (and only) complaint I've had so far is one bass player said it was too "loud." (have you heard of a volume control?)

Unfortunately for me, excess money is not running rampant around here in the musician community at present, but at least for the time being that these other local bassists have demoed my cabs on their gigs, the feedback has been 100% positive.

Yeah, I hear ya, and again, I'm a fan anyway.

My thing is, even if they're in the minority, and even if they could use the rest of their stuff differently to better mate with the cab, IMHO, they shouldn't have to, so long as they just say the cab doesn't work for them, that's cool. Now, on the other hand, if they try to make sweeping universal generalizations, that's another matter, but then again, most of us around here know to disregard and blow those off anyway, so it's no biggie.

Just sounded like you were rippin' folks for not liking Schroeders, which is their right, regardless of if everyone agrees with how they like to set up the rest of their stuff, and I thought that was kinda' odd. If I misread, my bad. No prob.

Peace.

Nice ad, Larry. :hiding:

Seriously, though, it's good advice to keep in mind. So many people swap gear at significant expense because they haven't figured out how to use what they own. This is complicated, as Jorg has highlighted, by the difference between what sounds good solo and what works in a gig context. When's the last time anyone took their band to the music store to crank out a tune while auditioning new gear? :D

Of course it is much worse when they are trying to get a sound out of their gear that isn't in their hands, but I won't go there.

It would be an ideal to find gear that can produce the tone we seek when set flat, but the world doesn't always spin the way we wish it would. I am very happy with my 1212, but there are probably a few dozen other cabs I would be satisfied with.

But yet sometimes it does. Don't think that it's not possible with certain combinations of gear to get great tone (both in the bedroom/basement AND on the gig) with all tone controls bypassed or set flat. ;)

You are a wise man, Vic.

Larry's a Shroeder dealer!?!?!?!

I'll have mine with eggs over easy and rye toast please!

If you look at my content even over the last couple of months, you will see that it's taken a different tone. I don't feel I've broken any rules but if I have, I'm sure a moderator will gladly tell me exactly what I've done and can or can't comment on in the future.

I've been an avid supporter and user of Schroeder cabinets for almost 10 months now and have plenty of on the gig experience in a wide variety of sonic quality and size venues. It was my persistence and convinction as a user and poster that convinced Jorg to make an "exception" to the general terms/rules he uses to select and award dealerships.

If someone asks how the Schroeder sounds in a given environment or asks which one or combination might be the best with a given style of music or head, or other Schroeder only questions which I have personally experienced, why should my being a dealer change the rules. I'm gonna continue to answer them here and now. If someone is having an issue with a Schroeder cabinet that I might be able to give advise to, why shouldn't I be able to do so if I have experience backing it up?

Next to Jorg himself, I'm every bit as qualified as anyone to offer advice or opinions on these cabinets.

I will not get involved in public forums about comparing x /other brand cabinets to Schroeder but again, unless its against the rules here, will respond if asked via email or personal mail or phone.

Call it SPAM if you want to.....but unless I'm informed that some of my comments made after February 15th, have broken certain posting rules, (which I'll stop immediately if so), I will plan on offering my honest opinion where it's "legal" to do so on Schroeder only or non-Schroeder threads.

Larry, I think the overall tenor might be that if you are a Schroeder dealer, you should indicate that somewhere either on your sig line or in your profile or something. This seems to be what the other members who are also dealers/manufacturers/etc. do.

+1

Larry, at least speaking for myself, I think you have contributed very good information here often. However, I do think your orientation as a vendor should be made obvious, because I think it does affect your opinion, and folks should know that up front. IMHO, anyway.

I'm about to purchase one of the extra large boxes...can't wait to see what all the buzz is about and become part of the family! This speaker will be hooked up to a PLX3102 and a Yamaha PB-1 pre.. :hyper: :bassist: :hyper:

oh - and thanks Brian for being so helpful so far! and you too, Jorg for making a product that so many TBers have gotten all excited about, I look forward to hearing this monster!

I wasn't suggesting that it was impossible, just that the number of rigs that can get the tone your looking for with a little tweaking is a much larger set than the ones that get it just by hitting the power button.

I play Alembic basses through an iAmp 800 into a 1212 and rarely touch a knob unless I am trying to emulate someone else's particular tone for a cover tune. Even then, I pretty much stick a Pod XT emulation in there and that's about it, maybe a tweak to favor one pickup or the other. You can count me among the happy ones, though I might go for a bit more cab in the future or maybe a swap of my iAmp-with-tuner for an iAmp-with-parallel-effects-loop.

One thing I can say with absolute certainty, though. It is MUCH cheaper to buy the right gear up front than to buy and sell a bunch of stuff while you're working up to it.

Gotcha. Sorry if I came across to strong, but I thought you were saying it's something that generally doesn't happen. But I've got where you're coming from now. :)

Hi Guys, just wanted to add my views on how this thread is going at the moment
Just read the last few posts and feel i must stick up for Larry.
Him being a dealer means he could be biased to any of the products he sells not just Shroeder but also that he is in a good position to be able to compare cabs and amps side by side which i would think a lot of us arent
He also has a lot of experience with the Shroeders and so i know he knows what he is talking about. ok, its just his opinion but at least he can make one based on real world useage and not just by what people say here on TB.
i had to purchase my 1210 unheard as im in the UK and could not try one out and Larry and a few others, including Jorg of course have been very helpfull in explaining to me how the cabs sound and which one would suit me better.
I dont see how Larry being a dealer could in anyway affect what i ended up getting but because he had used (sells) the various cabs he pointd me in the right direction.
Thanks to all of you who helped me get the best cab i have ever owned

Man! This is a long thread! OK, you guys finally got me talked into checking out a Schroeder. I've never heard one so I figure the only way to know is get my hands on one. I recently sold my Accugroove El Wappo Jr. and, although my first thought (and intention) was to replace it with a Tri-210, I decided to go for a Schroeder 1210. It should be here sometime next week. I'm purchasing the cabinet to use when I play out (all my other cabinets are kept at church) so the common theme of "sounds great in a gig situation" really excites me. Of course I am very curious as to how this cabinet is going to sound playing solo in my music room.
