Screamo?

And I love how the people on this thread just dismiss the genres as whiney.

5hat's because people like to drop their opinion without caring for any type of knowledge they could possibly gleam. ignorance can't always be fixed.

the thing with screamo is that there are two genres, both of them are called screamo, but they're very different.

the "first wave" of screamo, like circle takes the square, pg. 99, and pianos become the teeth are one genre.

the "second wave" of screamo is like Thursday, which sounds COMPLETELY different.

people just don't care to take the time to learn something, they want to just follow the labels that they denounce because they find it stupid, instead of opening their minds and ignoring the labels that are incorrect, biased marketing tersm because mall scenesters think that mcr is the most tr00 h4rdc0r3 scr34m0 br00t4ln3ss!

i wish i could run an advertising campaign, i'd make ads for fall out boy and call them death metal, just to see how many scenesters would buy into it. "i love this death metal!!!111!!11one!!1"

Agreed. But don't say that too loud, or they'll say we're splitting hairs and being too genre oriented. Funny, same guys who generalize an entire musical movement get upset when we point out their incorrect assumptions.

Screamo is not emo, nor is it metal. There are two waves.
Emo is a different, yet related genre from Screamo. There are three waves.
The quality of the music is subjective. But dismissing any genre just because of the fans of the genre is ridiculous.

/thread.

SS or tube?
finger style or pick?
10's 12's or 15's?
flats or rounds?
Neo or ceramic?

etc, etc, etc,

/thread

it's not even that. it's a question of whether these bands that have been called "screamo" are really screamo. I can make a solid state amp and label it a tube, but that doesn't make it correct.

imagine the outrage if a company started doing that, making solid state amps advertized as tube amps.

mcr and hawthorne heights are not screamo, they are emo. not to say i don't like them, i am gladly willing to send a complete catalog of my itunes library to anybody who asks for it, all 22,000 songs.

it's a question of does the media's label make the music, or does the music make the music?

Exactly.

On an unrelated note: I think you and I come from areas where the punk (and all related) scenes are very strong (Richmond and Gainesville produce some of my favorite artists), maybe the generalizing happens with other posters because they're only seeing what the media shows them as they have no "scene" to witness.

so, lemme take a crack at this.
screamo is a branch off of the Alternative and Pop of the 90s with a twist. a loud twist. the real question always seems to be "Is this band screamo or not?"
some people say Underoath is screamo ()

I am personally a fan of the music. i love how the guitars are on a heavy distortion setting and how the singing changes so drastically to a (dare i say it) alternative type of pop singing utilized by catchy bands of the 90s and 00s.

Underoath - christian metalcore/screamo hybrid
Winds of Plauge - metalcore (at least from what I've heard).
Silverstein - emo/screamo
A Day to Remember - metalcore/pop punk

^all IMO and etc. You picked some bands with varying influences. ADTR is always hard to classify because everybody either loves them or hates them, so they either want them in "their" scene or they don't. I personally like them (although I've heard from friends who hang out with the guys that they aren't exactly the most modest guys ever).

Metalcore and Screamo are pretty similar in sound, but a bit different. It all goes back to screamo using dissonance, where emo and metalcore are very on the beat and major/minor.

A band that blends a lot of aggressive styles very well is Converge. I don't know what else to call them besides brutal.

Forgot to address this part. Grunge and 90s alternative and emo/screamo were all influenced to some degree by hardcore punk. It's how they developed these influences and which particular bands they were influenced by that made them develop new genres.

Grunge roots can be traced back to The Melvins, who were, as many know, from Washington State.

Emo can be traced back to Dischord records, especially Fugazi and Rites of Spring and is based mostly on the East Coast. This type of music blended well with the post-punk, new wave, and indie scenes (aka college rock) and thus birthed the "second wave" of emo in the 90s.

Screamo is mostly influenced by the same guys as emo, but they have more of a metal influence than indie and post-punk. The Locust are good example of Screamo, although they incorporate a lot of mathrock, noise, and grindcore too.

Look at these genres more as cousins birthed from American Hardcore, not necessarily offshoots or direct descendents (misspelling and pun intended).
