I’m not stressed about it. I’m actually looking at the positives. This is a great chance for everyone to evaluate what really matters. It’s kinda nice to halt the consumption and “busy” for a while. Cool to see those satellite photos from Italy and China where the air pollution cleared up!The measures taken are the sternest in Norway has seen in peacetime:
There are other restrictions, but these are the most important ones. On the plus side the government has announced an aid package both for employees and businesses, to offset the economic problems that will inevitably ensue. Businesses are encouraged not to lay employees off, but suspend them instead.
- Our borders are now effectively closed. Norwegian nationals and permanent residents can enter, but will have to go into quarantine immediately. Other travelers will be returned immediately, or quarantined.
- All schools, universities and kindergartens are closed.
- All cultural and sporting events are canceled.
- All bars and clubs are closed, restaurants that serve food which are able to maintain 1m between patrons can stay open, but with restrictions.
- All gyms and sporting arenas are closed.
- All hair salons, beauticians, spas, piercing studios and tattoo parlors are closed.
- All swimming pools are closed.
- All physiotherapists, chiropractors, opticians and other non-essential health related businesses are closed.
- Use of public transport is discouraged.
- Working from home is encouraged for those who can do so. People are strongly advised against going out unless absolutely necessary.
- People who have been in contact with confirmed Covid-19 cases are quarantined for 14 days. Breaking the quarantine is punishable by fines or jail sentences up to 6 months.
- Travel that isn't absolutely necessary, both foreign and domestic, is strongly discouraged. It's illegal to be staying in second homes in other counties than the one in which you currently reside.
These are some of the immediate measures, further ones will come, I'm sure. For now, the situation is serious, but not as dramatic as one might expect. People are calm and cooperative, helping each other out when possible and getting on with their lives as best they can. By standing together, we hope to minimize the effects of this pandemic.
- Suspended employees will receive a minimum of 20 days full pay from the day of their suspension, with the government covering day 3 through 20.
- After this, suspended employees will receive benefits of minimum 80% of their salary (up to a certain level)
- The government will cover sick pay from day 3 of the illness.
- Freelancers and the self-employed will be guaranteed compensation amounting to 80% of their average income over the last three years.
- Businesses will be granted extension on taxes, and VAT will be reduced, and businesses that have been directly affected by the pandemic, such as the travel business and airlines, will receive special government aid as well.
- Inmates who are near the end of their jail terms and who are deemed not to represent a threat to society at large will be released to decrease infection risk among prison populations.
Good luck and good health to you and yours also in this difficult time.
My family is taking it very seriously, basically observing the above recommendations. But we do take a daily walk, which would be a bummer if that was no longer available.
The rub here in the states is that there is very little federal guidance, it’s a state level decision. Some states are more aggressive; Washington and Ohio just closed all bars and restaurants. My state hasn’t, and school closures are a local decision- NYC just announced 8 week closure, but my area is only 4 week.
good luck to you, and thanks for sharing that info
