I’m grateful (and lucky) to have gotten through it OK. In hindsight, I
really should have been hospitalized. There were a dozen or more occasions when I was very close to going to the ER because I was having so much trouble breathing, but I stubbornly resisted. My wife’s not gonna get over being pissed off about that for a
long time, and I can’t fault her for that. My dad was a world class athlete and military officer who very much raised me with the “rub some dirt on it and walk it off” mindset, and I have a terrible (and admittedly hypocritical) tendency to convince myself I don’t need medical attention for anything that doesn’t involve a helluva lot of blood or visibly broken bones. So, definitely don’t follow my example, but do heed my advice — Take the COVID-19 threat seriously, and if you or someone you know is sick and starts experiencing respiratory distress, don’t just wait and see how it goes, get medical attention!
