Sweet! I don't think I've ever seen a side mounted 5pin connector before. And the quilt is breathtaking.

Same here.....and considering I own 2 of my top 5, that says a lot.

Thanks guys I appreciate your comments about my bass. It is also one of my favourite basses. I've loved it since it first appeared on the Alembic custom of the month. There have been times when I had seriously considered a custom build but I couldn't persuade myself that I knew enough about basses generally to be able to specify a personal bass that would encompass everything I needed for my sound and playability. This is as near perfect as I could imagine at this point and anything that I could change would be cosmetic.

Now having owned the bass for 2 years I don't think a custom is necessary because I think it would be virtually impossible to specify anything that would make this bass surplus to requirements.

I've read about the ebony neck lamination option on Alembic's website for years, but this is the first time I've ever seen them in a picture. Quite stunning visually! Can anyone comment on Alembic's party line that the ebony lams "emphasize the fundamental" more than the purpleheart lams?

For me personally it is hard to say that what I am hearing is directly associated with the Ebony lams. The bass does have a massive presence, clarity and punch which is stronger and different than my other alembics. The only one to challenge it
is my all maple Elan 4 with it's filter fully open and the pan central, to me at that point it sounds very much like a series bass until you change the filter setting then it sounds like an élan again.

I have a series I bass that has a similar wood recipe to my series II except it has purple heart neck lams and the neck pickup closer to the base of the fretboard. That bass has a massive warm bass response as a result of that. So from my perspective the difference between the two with the filters fully open to me is that one has a warmer and more pronounced bottom end response than the other. Now whether that is down to the ebony or pickup position I can't categorically say.

To be fair to alembic, Mica showed me the difference on the scopes at the workshop and you can see the fundamental as a larger signal and sustain on the screen. A short while after I got the bass home I did post on the alembic forum that I could hear some clear harmonics in the output that made some individual notes sound like a chord. Mica reminded me of her warning not to learn to hear those things as they can make you think something is wrong. It's just something some people can hear and others not but it all contributes to the sound of the bass.

The reality is also that Ebony has been used for hundreds of years on classical instruments for it's musical, aesthetically and hardwearing properties so I do believe it is bringing something to the sound. My only problem for me is I can't identify exactly what that when i'm playing it, all i hear is a great bass sound.

Ladies & Gentlemen may I present my Series I bass.

I bought it last year from a collector in Germany. It had been a non musician collectors bass since new in 1995 and had been kept in perfect condition. No playing markings at all and get this. It still had the original strings on it when I bought it. It has the most authoritative and warmest low B i've ever heard on any bass.
The front and back are burl maple with a amber tint, the body is mahogany with purple heart and maple laminates. The neck is maple & purple heart and it has side LED's on the fretboard.
My girlfriend loves it.
