It seems like there was already a more comprehensive answer but I'll weigh in that my experience with the Mel9 is that the stated limit of the low A is about right.

It’s pretty straightforward. The detune knob does exactly that (detunes the pitch of that voice), right of noon to sharpen, left of noon to flatten. When “modulate” is switched on, the LFO effectively cyclically moves the detune knob between noon and its current position, hence can be used for vibrato effects.

One important fact which wasn’t mentioned in the manual last time I read it, rather, I figured this out for myself:

Saw 1, Square 1 and Sine 1 are hard routed to LFO 1 for pitch modulation.

Saw 2, Square 2 and Sine 2 are hard routed to LFO 2 for pitch modulation.

(Contrast this with tremolo where either LFO can be used.)

If LFO 1 and LFO 2 are set to the same speed then you don’t notice a difference. However, set LFO 2 to a multiple of LFO 1 and you’ll get oscillators detuning and different rates if you have used both an instance of oscillator 1 and oscillator 2 (I mean wave shapes here, not voices).

@In3d1ble - I haven't forgotten about you... I just got a chance to sit down this evening and make start digging into this sound as I wait for yet another offer on a house to be rejected! :D:roflmao: LOL

Currently two saw waves, a square wave and a sine wave. It's not quite there and needs some more tinkering, it still feels a bit squishy and less immediate than Collier's sound. But it's a good start. More to come.

Hi 5sg,

How is the house hunting? Any luck yet?

Would you mind sharing the preset you were creating even if it's not finished yet? I'd just like to use it as is for now as I think it sounds quite good already.

Sorry about the delay!

It's a HUGE relief to report that Mrs. 5sg and I are closing on a house next week!

For the TL:DR crowd, feel free to skip this paragraph ;);):
I'm pretty sure we got lucky and the house we got went under the radar a bit... It was listed at like 11pm on a Friday, so we're thinking everyone had already booked up all the other houses that weekend and weren't quite paying attention to ours. Offers were accepted through that Monday, and we heard from our agent that evening saying the sellers were interested in why we wanted the home. They must have liked our answer, because our agent called on Tuesday morning saying we were outbid by a cash offer that was $2k more than our bid (a conventional loan $25k over asking price), but the seller said if we could outbid that offer by $100 (yes, one hundred dollars), they'd sell to us. Not exactly kosher with regulations on their end, but a no brainer on ours. lol (But in the current market, Equal Housing seems to have gone out the window! Boise Idaho is INSANE.)

But... now it's been an overwhelming rush of contracts and paperwork, inspections, lining up stuff for closing/moving and packing on top of work, so between that and an out-of-state Memorial weekend.... My brain is kinda mushy and I haven't even thought about picking up a bass in about 3 weeks. :help:!

I'll try and get a few minutes in the next couple days to fire up the practice rig and get that rough patch uploaded, then keep working on it when we get finished up moving. I've actually got a couple Spectrum patches I want to work on as well (Bootsy's sound in the new Still Wish You Were Here tribute for one), and I need to finish up a C4 patch inspired by a Matt Johnson (Jamiroquai keyboardist) Moog video. And Lord... I've only been able to just look at the Ultrawave sitting on my desk!

Just gotta make it through next week and then I can breathe! lol

I'm considering buying a C4, so I read the user manual. There's a note: "For full compliance with EN 61000-4-6 standard, input cable must be less than 3 meters in length."

What happens if I connect my bass to the C4 using a 6m cable, do the EN61000-4-6 Police come calling? Will the judge let me off on a technicality if the 6m cable connects to my tuner and then a 10cm cable connects my tuner to the C4?

First of all, compliance standards are not laws or regulations. The police cannot enforce them.

In this case, very roughly, longer cable -> more susceptible to RF noise. Nothing you didn't know, and nothing specific to C4.

Ok, a more serious question this time:

From what I can see in the user manual and the mobile app, the Control knobs on the pedal cannot be assigned secondary functions to be accessed with the Alt button, is that right? (If not, that seems like an obvious feature request for a future firmware update...)

And the top two knobs can't be reassigned at all?

Correct on both counts.

Spectrum can still use secondary functions, probably because it has more free code space due to its lesser feature set overall.

However, you can reassign the knobs on the fly via MIDI commands so, in conjunction with an external controller, you can access more parameters from the two control knobs. (The caveat is that this section of the pedal still has bugs and not all destinations that should be available are actually available.)

All correct.

Btw you can download and play around with the mobile app to see what options are available. Since the mobile to C4 communication is one-way the app needs to pretend that there is always a pedal connected.

Thanks. Yes, I did that before posting my question, but was a bit surprised when I couldn't see a setting for secondary "alt" functions on the knobs so wanted to double-check with the experts that I had not misunderstood. But that's not a dealer breaker feature for me, I still intend to buy one and try it out.

Understood, but if I were to use the C4 with an external controller I think I would just use extra presets and not need to reassign knobs on the fly.

I'm planning to use the C4 exclusively with bass, and I like to keep my bass pedalboard as small as possible so to start with I'm just going to use the 6 presets accessible with no external controller (and the desktop or phone app to set up the presets).

That won’t last long! You’ll soon be hankering for more presets. Though, you can easily set up a phone app such as the free version of TouchOSC to make a control surface for MIDI command buttons so you can access all 128 presets and other functions if you still need to keep the size down.

Some of the older SA One Series pedals are great with their 6 default (and easy to access patches). My Lunar and Aftershock are mostly used in the fashion. On my board they are connected to a Neuro Hub. I use a Boss ES-5 as my main midi PC and CC, patch and loop organiser. For a lot of my ES-5 patches, I'm using the first 6 patches on those two pedals. I copied the same Aftershock patches to my hub so they are the same on the hub and / or via the 3 way toggle switches. I've set my Lunar's patches in a similar way, I tend to use the same combination on both pedals. So my patch 1 on my lunar is 90% of the time the same as my Patch 1 on my Aftershock.
However....feature rich and dense pedals like the Ultrawave and C4 or Spectrum Filter...(for me) 6 patches isn't going to cut it. These pedals are capable of doing SO much and so well. In fact a C4 and an Ultrawave could easily do 1/2 of my pedalboard. For a mini board, I could easily do a C4, Ultrawave and a Collider. You could consider a permanent connection to your C4 via USB and a tablet, that might work.

Midi wise, one of these days I'm going to get a midi knob panel that allows me to send knob control numbers to Midi CC and I'll assign them to the C4 and Ultrawave's Midi map. Then I can twiddle any number of the C4 and Ultrawave's controls in real time.

Does anyone know if it is possible to sustain a note and play over the top at the same time?
Yes, but it’s convoluted and requires MIDI. Use the search function within this thread and use the keyword “freeze” to find out how I worked out a way to do it.

I’ve done it for you here:

EDIT - here’s the post where I explain the actual method:
