Yeah I am the same way. I was SO CLOSE to going full on HUB at one point. But in the end, i just didn't take that dive. I've always wanted a small, reliable and in depth, yet simple synth that was easy to use and sounded really good. And to have it affordable. There are some options out there that fit that bill but were always slightly short of what I wanted. The C4 sure seems like its it. While it can be very in depth and complex, I have a feeling once I dial in the sounds I want, I wouldn't need another synth ever. I ord the Boss SY1 cause of all I just said and it was more accessible to me in cost atm. But I def see myself getting the C4 eventually. To me, it seems like it's going to be the answer to a ton of guys who are in the same exact boat as me. And then some. I think for the size and price point, it's going to be very hard to beat the C4 on many levels.

Agreed. I’ve been eying the FI for years, but the price, size, and infrequent updates have kept me away. The C4 is what I basically wanted the FI to be in terms of features/interface.

It immediately replaced my cog t-65 and my xerograph deluxe.
There are some really excellent octave clones already from the community.

Nice. I’ll likely keep my analog filters around - Microtron 3, Wonderlove, and MF-101. But for a small, versatile setup the C4 may be a way to have all of my octave/filter/synth needs in one unit. Also, the filter functions already sound/feel superior to the Manta, and I’ve barely scratched the surface. Namely, the sensitivity and triggering feels more organic and subtle in the C4. The Manta has great sounds, but the way it adjusts and readjusts (with a sizable delay time) based on dynamics made it unusable for me. This thing is a huge step forward and I’m pumped to tweak some of the user presets for octave and filter to see if they get the job done for me.

I will likely get a SY1 even an EHX BassMonoSynth when I can snap one cheap for the studio and used after i sell off a bunch of dirt pedals no longer needed and other stuff.

Finally I've had time to dedicate time just to explore the filters and realizing how much more control one has compared to the manta. I published 10 presets with names indicating what type of filter this is. Unsurprisingly, the filters will react quite differently depending on which pickups are used, where on the strings you pluck/pick, and how much treble goes into it. At first glance, many of them might seem extremely similar, but really depending on what you feed the input, your output will deliver varyingly coloured filters Hope there is something helpful for some.

I have a lot of time this week to dive deeper into it.


First impressions:
+ this will 90% replace my FI: Easier to get to the sound I want in less time. The FI has more options per voice but the time it takes to get to a sound is longer.
- this will 90% NOT replace my filter and octaver (3Leaf Octabvre MkII and Chromatron)
- have to dive a lot deeper but the 'pure' square and saw aren't "talking" to me yet.

Quite a few useful presets in the cloud, I hope to be able to add a few myself.

Really hoping to have this pedal replace my filter and octave pedals..... Hard for the C4 to compete with the $349 Chromatron though....
The Chromatron sounds frickin awesome! Wish I could justify the funds for a dedicated filter pedal of that quality but just don't use filter that much.

Using the C4 with the Hub – Updated 7.23.19
We made a decision to support a very large number of parameters in each C4 preset. This has made C4 presets very powerful. However, the number of parameters is twice as much as what is currently supported in a multi-pedal Hub “Scene”. We believe that the long-term benefits of powerful C4 presets are more important with near term 100% Hub Scene support.

What is currently supported
MIDI Controller >> Hub >> C4
· C4 must be on MIDI channel 1 for now. This will be fixed soon (within days).
· Hub can be on any channel.
· MIDI CCs can be sent to the C4 through the Hub. See the MIDI Map in the Desktop Editor AND the C4 Manual. CC103 and CC104 can select C4 Presets!
· MIDI PCs are not sent through the Hub to the C4.
MIDI Controller with Host USB (Disaster Area)
· All of the items in the section above
· MIDI PCs are supported (for now, on MIDI channel 1 only).

What is NOT currently supported

MIDI Controller >> Hub >> C4
· The Neuro Desktop Editor cannot see the C4 through the Hub. One must connect the Editor directly to the C4 via USB
· The C4 cannot be added to a Hub Scene. But, one can create a MIDI macro that sends a PC to the Hub and a CC to the C4 with the appropriate preset location.

Next Steps
We are currently assessing the difficulty of updating the Hub to support the larger C4 presets. We hope to issue updated Hub firmware as soon as possible. We will share the timeline as soon as this step is taken.​

In our internal testing we have gotten really close to all kinds of filters. Much closer than we did with the BEF Pro and Manta. I think your 90% will go lower on the filter stuff.

This is great info! It clears up a couple things for me. Thank you for taking the time to do this for us all! I haven't had time to trouble shoot my setup with the suggestions made earlier, but that info along with this info should get me up and running.

And just my two cents on the hub support thing...as long as the midi CC thing works to select presets (and it seems to work just fine, my problem aside)... for me anyway, that solves the scene issue, making it not really necessary. I would have my scenes set up for the other pedals in the Hub and just use the CC message to set the C4 as needed. Problem solved. Again, just my two cents.

I’ve been toying around with the idea of having a C4 to replace my Broughton Synth Voice in addition to all the other octaves/envelope filters that have come and gone over the years. Is it possible to make a convincing Synth Voice preset or is a super clean octave not within the C4's capabilities?

The C4 would have to be pretty damn good at modeling to kick my Chromatron and Cog Effects t-65 off my board. Still mostly an analog guy. I'm getting the C4 for moogish synth bass lines.

@WBasstrolo Said it replaced his COG. Not sure if he fully modeled it.

I've never owned a COG myself but I imagine with the Filter control available in the Monophonic Pitch voices you could convincingly model the COG. The parameter adds the perfect amount of "bvvvmmmm". I was surprised how good the +1 Octave sounds in the MonoPitch voices too.

I've modeled the MXR BOD to the point where I can't tell the difference mixed and I've seen a handful of presets in Neuro that model the OC2. I doubt many standalone octave pedals can stand up to the C4.

IDK, I have a trace route that loses connection at some US data center.

I Googled for Weebly and found out in November they blocked all traffic from Russia and Ukraine “as a security measure”. They must have used GeoIP for that or something similar.

Haha, could be. I've had a BEFPro and a Manta before (after having a EHX enigma for many years) and got rid of them.

To me the controls on a filter are highly interactive and a mini-tweak makes a world of a difference. Only having one parameter at a time to control (or mousing around) is a dealbreaker.
I've seen and heard guys have fantastic sounds on both BEFPro and Manta's but whenever I tried to copy them it didn't work for me.

This morning some more 'work' (studiotime) and then more C4-playing!


Thanks for the Hub-update/info. ES-8 >> Hub >> C4 is exactly how I want to control it.

sure, a $10/month VPN service works. but I'd rather prefer to spend this money in a long run on a new Source Audio pedal, not paying for workarounds for downloading Neuro Editor or updating my pedal's firmware.

this also limits my possibilities to actually sell my used pedals, because I cannot give a sourceaudio.net link to my potential buyers. so I guess I'll stick with my Manta and not upgrade to C4, sigh.
