Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

On the verge of writing to either SA or DMC support ... but though maybe I'll ask TB first.

Did anyone have issues with DMC.micro and C4? I've connected and used them together for some time, then all of a sudden the DMC stopped scrolling through my presets. I did the whole factory update and repeated setup for C4. Still nothing.

Guess the problem is with SA?

Sounds like a conversation with Disaster Area is the place to start...though I will say the most recent round of updates (firmware and editors) has made my Desktop editor way less stable...both C4 and AS.

I love all the community patches, but I've not had one that I haven't had to tweak and adjust. Which is quite normal. No two basses are the same. Neither are the bassists.
I run two main basses. My fretted bass is loaded with Nordstrand Ceramic dual coils and it's active / passive (although most of the time I'm using it passively with my FX). It's certainly got a hot output signal and I can clip a pre-amp very easily. My other bass is a low output fretless with custom Armstrong pickups (wound to sound like low output single coils, but are noise cancelling). I had the pickups modelled on a pair of Lane Poors. The bass runs through a Bartolini 2 band EQ. Which boosts the output a bit but it's still a low output. So the tonal, impedance and perceived gain from both basses are totally different. Some patches that work great on my fretted bass just don't even trigger or sound nice on my fretless and vice versa. It's not a simple situation of equalising the levels between the two basses. They just behave differently to the same effect and that's that. I have dual sets of AS and C4 patches for fretted and fretless that's I've tweaked to sound similar, but they are not the same.

The interesting thing is that the 'clean'/'clean' set flat...isn't necessarily flat. When running A/B tests to get it flat in the lows you have to give it a good amount of boost in the 70hz or so range. I did a full reset and readjust, it seems like the pedal has intrinsic roll off in that range at tabla rasa.

What firmware version is on the Micro?

This was an issue that was sorted out by disaster area designs. You just need to update the firmware on the dmc.micro

Their customer support is awesome if you need any help.

Can anybody provide any tips on how to achieve that soaking wet, squelchy Mutron-style filter tone on the Spectrum? I can get somewhat close, but not nearly wet enough.

Example (around the 55 second or the 2 minute mark for instance):

I think a lot of why "that" sound happens is because the filter has its own natural drive. There are pedals out there that clone just the Mu-Tron III gain stage.

Gotcha. I've never had a chance to play with a real Mu-Tron so I don't exactly know what makes it tick.

In any case, is it possible to approximate this sound in the SA stuff, or is a real Mu or clone the only way to really get it?

Of course, it's all in the ears of the listener. Some folks think the 3Leaf Proton does the job; personally, while I like the Proton, for me it just doesn't get "there." I couldn't quite get "there" with the SA BEF or BEF Pro, either, although I like those, too.

Sorry I can't help you with the Spectrum specifically! I haven't had the pleasure of trying one yet.

Spectrum is the best we have done, by far.

You need one my Filter Brother, you need one.

Hi all,
I got lucky and am now an excited owner of a soleman! :)
I also have an aftershock, a c4, a nemesis, hot hand 3 and 3rd party expression already hooked up to my hub.
I remember folks talking about advantages of setting things to their own channels. Is this still a hing? I'm assuming with nemesis and c4 having 128 slots internally, that'd allow me to save and recall presets from there with CC from the soleman.

I'm also not finding much debate of expression into soleman (i.e. converting to CC) versus into hub. Currently I'm leaning toward keeping it analog and sending to hub. What are folks' thoughts on that?

Also, while waiting for global midi clock implementation on the soleman, I'm thinking of sending clock to a merger into the hub and merge with the rest of messages from the soleman. Reason behind this is that I need a constant clock even if changing presets. Any alternative solutions?

Lastly, what are peoples' favorite modes: scene/list or panel? I'm not sure which one will be most useful and am aware this is highly subjective and also depends on how macros come into play.
I read that the suggestion has been put forth that panels could become part of scenes/lists. That would be wonderful.

I'm curious to learn what setup people have been happy and successful with!

Thank you! :)

I have expression from hub rather than my other controllers right now because it's been fairly pain free and convenient and also I believe some have reported MIDI latency. If you're working with multiple pedals including non SA ones, there would be a good argument for going from controller expression.

Also, I generally am using the hub to recall presets on the non-MIDI integrated SA pedal I have (the AfterShock) and still using CC command for my C4. Since most of my patches include other loops and Midi channels its just easier to do that.

I use the Soleman with SA and non-SA pedals. I'm not doing any real improv with my current band, so I have patches set per song and don't really need flexibility within the song. So I use Scene mode with macros on the Soleman to recall scenes on the hub and send PC/CC messages to other pedals. I do have each MIDI pedal on its own channel so I can directly address them as needed. Doesn't apply to Aftershock, obviously.
I use the SA Dual Expression pedal with 1 output to my Strymon Mobius and the other going to the Soleman. I change it to MIDI CC in the Soleman to send to any other pedal. It could be connected directly to the hub for the same thing, but it simplifies my programming to do it on the Soleman.

If I was doing more of a jam band thing (as I was in the past), I might use panel mode. For now, I just program the set list into the Soleman and use that. I have the Favorite button set for a macro that turns off all of the effects (via scene and CC).

I don't use MIDI clock, so can't off anything on that question. Enjoy the new tool!

Yeah, I have any patches that need tempos pre-programmed since Some of my pedals were used before I had any controllers in use. We play to a click, so it was easy enough just to pre-program and I could certainly pick a controller or pedal to clock from I believe. In the absence of that, you might be interested in something like this.

Thank you for your responses!
I don't have any other midi controlled pedals on my board other than source audio, so that'll make things easy with regards to effects. However, my plan is to have a setup where I can use my ehx 95000 looper at table height and send PC and cc messages from the soleman to control record, play and muting tracks while having no hands free playing bass. All the other times I can use the faders on the ehx for volume and pan etc. I feel like this way I'd get the most out of the looper.
This would obviously be a panel mode case, and I could bank up to another panel and have, say, a panel for transport messages and another for muting and unmuting etc. And then other panels for efx of course.
So exciting.
I have a clock source already, actually a keystep from arturia. Which makes me think I might be able to even send transport messages to the keystep sequencer. Endless options!

One question for yous who send cc messages to your nemesis and c4: is there a cc that scrolls through presets one by one? Rather than having one macro per preset slot it could just be one macro for that cc to scroll up and one for scrolling down?
