Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

Forgive my ignorance here, but i am considering a C4 JUST for the octave. Is there a sticky here that is addressed to this? TIA. How simple/difficult is this for a caveman digiphobe like me?

There's a stock preset on the C4 called pure octave, and that's as close as you're likely to get to an oc2 in the digital world, although there are also some pretty close community patches too.

IMO, there's nothing digital that captures the roundness and feel of an analogue octaver, and while my C4 hasn't kicked my 3Leaf Octabvre Mini from my board, I keep the stock oc2 patch loaded up as its definitely close enough if I get stuck, and if my 3Leaf broke down, I'd probably use the C4 full time.

There are lots of OC-2 presets (41, in fact)

TL,DR - Waxing lyrical about the Ultrawave, a pedal that is hugely misunderstood after FINALLY gaining an understanding and coaxing some great drive sounds out of it (YMMV).

Zombie thread revival and long post incoming... but I've had an absolute epiphany with Ultrawave bass over the past few days and there's just not a lot of positivity documented so thought I'd spread some love. The Ultrawave seems to generally be met with apathy or negativity, and I think it's maybe just misunderstood (poor marketing campaign being a big factor maybe?)

I had one of these about a year ago, wrote it off as digital nonsense and sent it back (worst pedal I've ever owned was mentioned a few times). Ended up re-ordering a few months ago after little luck finding a good gated fuzz and remembering @Quatschmacher had some great mastotron style patches on the community. Downloaded these, and thought if nothing else this covered the price of admission.

After some board shake ups I was tempted to move it on, but after seeing the poor re-sale value and limited board space thought I need to stick with it. Turns out; with a lot less effort than expected, you can get some great NORMAL drive sounds! The trick is that you don't NEED to use all of the EQ options and band splitting options available; keep it simple! There's a drive appendix on the Ultrawave page, which details all of the drive engines and what they're best at... and this went a long way to my understanding changing.

My pedal now has the following, where previously I hadn't even bothered to change the stock settings (bar 1 anyways). All custom patches except where credited

For a very specific Kasabian Clubfoot > Chemical Brothers Block Rocking beats mash up we do.
Circle - Mono > stereo > mono Drive, Fuzzy on one "side", trebly TS style the other (Clubfoot)

Circle alt - Clean, heavily compressed mid/treble heavy (Block rocking beats)

General drives
Triangle - Tube drive, fairly dark with a bit of clean mixed in

Triangle Alt - Tube/TS style drive mixed with a bit of clean

Synthy fuzz
Square - @Quatschmacher Mastotron gated fuzz patch

Square Alt - Lower gain version of above to feed solo'd octave into

That's a lot of functionality and saved board space from a pedal I've previously written off twice. I don't tend to dabble in the crazier aspects and pitch tremolo etc, my C4 covers my synth requirements. I think the problem is that the pedal was pushed heavily on it's crazy off the wall features (I remember basstheworld.com saying they were asked to showcase the crazier elements) when really it should've been pushed as a utility pedal with infinite tone shaping abilities should you need them.

I'm happy to share my patches if anyone is struggling with this pedal and scared to move it on, I'll see if I can get some audio samples if anyone cares, and I'm happy to offer any limited experience that I have if anyone desires (although I think this post has exhausted that!)

If you made it this far then thanks for reading!

Good read and I wouldn't mind having a listen to these sounds you made if possible.

I think the Ultrawave is maybe the most difficult SA pedal to share patches with others due to everyone's different set ups. What may sound amazing with one person, sounds very uninspiring to another with their rig. Unlike the C4 for example which is easier for people to get the same/similar sounds to the patches creator I feel.

I went through a phase of loving my Ultrawave, then not liking it so much as to have it for sale on reverb, then to having it on my board as a dual compressor (which I still use when going board to DI) now I'd like to use it as a drive pedal Infront of my amp so you're post is welcome news for me!

Great stuff! Thank you for sharing. Hard pedal to explain in a few words.....

Thisisswonbon: I struggle with the Ultrawave and would like some guidance. I am happy to exchange some ideas. I refuse to give up!

I agree in calling it an incredible utility pedal! One pedal gives me not one, but two of each: noise gate, hpf, eq, and compressor. I use various combinations of these features at the beginning and end of my pedal chain all in one compact footprint. That's all without even touching the drive and tremolo capabilities.

Another 'dabbler' with on/off love for UW.

It's a brilliant multi purpose unit... But.... Sometimes I just don't dig the distortion sounds? They seem to quickly run to 'OTT fizzy fuzz', rather than 'deep, throaty, subtle growl'.
I spent considerable time early on, and drafted my own classification of useful distortions for using in my alt rock band. Pleased with quite a few at the time.

That band finished and new one concentrating on funk, dub, dance, soul. So less need for OD & distortion. I revisit some of my presets and they don't appeal. Maybe I just don't like distorted bass anymore?

But UW is v useful in pedal chain as extra comp, EQ, tone shaping, some trem.

Trying too hard to be wacky with it can frustrate. I sometimes think it's full potential is better realised with guitar, rather than bass. But, bottom line, I wouldn't want to remove it.

I just bought an Ultrawave which should be here this week. I've spent the past two years playing an old Bass Multiwave and I now use enough sounds, and the want to switch between those sounds, to warrant the new pedal. (Or, at least, that's what I'm telling myself :D .)

The Ultrawave is too deep and that's what's kept me from it until now. But the basic distortions between it and the Multiwave should be the same, and then some. My first order of business is to find sound #15, the first "normal single band" setting. That's "the sound" and it's just a nice thick overdrive/distortion. My octave sound (#3) is cool, but it cuts bass. so I'll need to dial that in. The wacky one is #4, which has envelope and octave at higher gain.

I think the trick will be only dialing in sections. It's always the subtle changes that make things work in the band. Then I can use the community presets for entertaining myself.

Just uploaded some nice phaser presets that I’ve tried to match as closely as possible to an MXR Phase 95 and Maestro Orbit. They were created on Spectrum but will also work on C4.
Seems to be a weird issue with these presets not recalling correctly over iOS on my phone. I’m going to try them on desktop to see if that’s better. They sound totally different when recalling them from internal memory. I’ve encountered this before.

Edit - desktop seems ok. Obviously a bug somewhere in the iOS app.

Man, its been WAY too long. I need to mess with my C4 soon. Catch up a little on all the awesome presets you guys are creating! Hopefully on my weekend coming up.
It’s been a while since I’ve used mine. I packed all my pedals away a few months ago to focus on some other stuff. Been slowly digging a few out again.
