Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

This is a good question that depends on what you really want or need on a pedalboard...

When I found out that the UltraWave (Bass) has the graphic and parametric EQ's, HPF/LPF, and Multi-band Compressor the Boss BC-1X was sold off. Then the various distortion and the understanding of the Multi-band aspects along with the Tremolo effects section. I sold a Boss Slicer and have no other dirt pedals. Unless, you consider the dirt also available with the C4 Synthesizer?

The C4 replaced the Spectrum Intelligent Filter because (a) the C4 can preform all of the SIF functions (b) I'm no longer intimidated by the recently updated Nuero Editor 3 UI (c) I took a short class in modular synthesis online (Sarah Belle Reid) that was suggested by a TB member! This got me the terms, how things interact and what to do to achieve a type of sound theory. Also, the Nuero Editor 3 preset library availability and community of contributors.

My desire to have the Nemesis ADT is size, audio quality and flexibility over a super nice Boss RE-202 that has been sold off. The ADT has a "FREEZE" function and the Nemesis ADT can be operated independently as a #1 channel and #2 channel. I will run the C4 loop with #2 channel for modulation not available on the C4. #1 channel will be the entire wet signal for delay. The wet signal runs into the Broughton BBA to clean up/step up the signal into the Two Notes Opus.

Dry (or analog signal) can run from the #2 channel of the UltraWave Bass (direct) to the ZIO Bass Preamp.

(I do have a One Control Crimson Red Bass (DUB) to put after the UWB and can put the really nice Pigtronix Constellator BBD analog delay before the ZIO Bass for a sort slapback delay with one repeat for a Tony Levin trick.)

My answer is at least (2) ~ UltraWave Bass and the C4 Synthesizer.

My current acquisition (ZIO Bass Preamp) also includes the Nuero HUB, now that I will have (3) midi controlled SA pedals.

The SA168 midi adapter is also available for One Series pedals that have the TRRS 1/8" proprietary midi control (HUB) and no 5 DIN connection for midi. ($49)

The SOLEMAN was a must have in my mind. There seemed a best idea to also be using the SA Dual Expression Pedal. I plan to run one side to the Soleman. (The other to the Nemesis ADT that has a 1/4" TRS expression pedal input on the pedal.)

Definitely read some manuals and remember the routing options available. Example: the C4 has an external effects loop connection on #2 channel, but the UltraWave Bass doesn't. The UWB can cascade #1 into #2 channel or run the #1 & #2 channels in parallel.

My board is in transition, but still will feature at the very least a Boss RC-5 Stereo Looper...it may retain the Boss MO-2 Multi Overtones as a stereo splitter and treatment for the dry signal path, but may also go bye-bye, too.
How much did the class cost? I just went to her website and there was no pricing information.

What is the most efficient way to build a Source Audio pedal board with 3-4 SA pedals and some midi control with presets covering all pedals' settings? Neuro hub and a controller like the Soleman? Any smaller alternatives? Would love to see some setups if you have them.
Depends a bit on what your needs are: the only SA pedal on my board is an Ultrawave Bass. I have an Aftershock, but I don’t need it and am trying to get motivated to list it for sale.

So I have three midi pedals on my board: UW Bass, an HX One, and a NUX Melvin Lee Davis (which I don’t bother with, midi wise). I considered adding a Spectrum, but it’s overkill for my filter needs.

To control the UW Bass and HX One, I have a $30 M-Vave Chocolate: I have 7 scenes set for short and long presses of the four buttons (I reserve one to turn on the tuner for the HX One, which is kind of a pain to do normally).

I really don’t even need 7 scenes, tbh. Maybe if I had added the Spectrum.

The Modular Synthesizer Introduction was free. There are follow on classes that I expect are reasonable for that type of thing. However, for myself, just having enough information to be dangerous is sufficient in moving forward.

There was just a follow up online "free seminar" with four students from her current class that is happening right now. I listened to what they are doing and probably not what your average Bass player is going to be doing I would imagine. Coincidentally, no students were Bass junkies!

Any idea if SA would consider releasing a multi fx platform? Their effects are really top notch, I just wish I could have multiple of them in one unit instead of juggling multiple pedals/cables, plus midi controller for global scenes. Maybe downloadable packages so we can buy (or rent?) the pedals we need on it?

If I could have C4, Atlas, Spectrum, Aftershock and Ultrawave in one hardware unit, money would fly out of my wallet so freaking fast!!

My comment would be that I consider the Atlas Compressor to be a production tool to perhaps go along with the Artifakt. UltraWave (Bass) has a studio grade Multi-band Compressor in it. Personally, I don't require that many compression units as a player.

C4, as mentioned before, has ALL of the Spectrum Intelligent Filter features in it, so why buy both?

(The After Shock being an older original One Series pedals does have some limitations that having the UltraWave (Bass) doesn't and can offer, between it and the C4, likely more distortion, OD and Fuzzz options than you may ever use?)

UltraWave (Bass) and C4 covers what you desire really well.

Now, as far a midi controller goes, many will work, but I prefer to keep system continuity and potential best customer support on the Source Audio units or system. Rather than having to rely on inefficiency and the potential of less attentive technical support? Also, there are footswitch options to access presets and scrolling some features.

Basically, I would be very surprised to see SA (a) do a multi effects beyond what they do now (b) price point is really good as it is (c) the specific units you list are duplicitous (d) The available routing options would likely be reduced (e) buy a PT Nano and put a tuner on it and go.

I Have a DMC Micro G4 controller but only to control one pedal a C4. it can handle 4 pedals but i think you would need something like the Neuro hub to connect. the DMC is expensive but probably smallest most useful device....my board is not the best designed because i used a PT mini board I had lying around and few PS fit under.. so when I added the DMC i had to add another mini power supply. eventually ill get another board 'specially because I won a pedal in the contest...;-)

Something mentioned above 👆🏼

Having a Nuero HUB and a different midi controller is just fine. The "SCENES" created are stored on the HUB device, not the pedals. The connection to the pedals from the HUB, by the TRRS 1/8" proprietary midi for control, talks between the HUB and pedal being controlled by a PC midi message from any compatible midi controller such as a SOLEMAN and others available.

An advantage to the Soleman is the three modes that it has. One is specific to scene sorting and recall with the HUB (another reason I decided to use the SA controller) But, using standard midi control with an SA168 midi adapter ($49) has the TRRS midi output to the pedal for everyday standard PC & CC messages from the Soleman or other compatible midi devices connected to 5 DIN midi or 1/8" Type A Midi cable (Boss style).

Point is; if you have a couple (up to 5) SA pedals that you make changes on and are not "static" in operation. The Nuero HUB for scene control cuts your workload WAY DOWN in getting midi messaging set up. The HUB is an accurate, time saver and valuable board plumbing device, for communication, storage and recall of multiple pedal parameters at a push of a button. 5 DIN midi I/O and TRS 1/4" Expression Pedal Jack.

If you're just controlling a single SA One Series pedal, then a HUB ($99) is probably more than you need, that can be accomplished with any midi controller and SA168 ($49) midi adapter.

SA really has the customer first in every thing I've ever seen?

One thing that I’ve never really understood is, is there any way to bridge midi commands and neurolink (i.e. between channel 2 on the pedals)? I had assumed that this was basically what the neurohub did, but it’s not clear why the midi adapter doesn’t do the same thing.

To be clear, I’m perfectly happy with the answer “because it can’t”, it’s just not obvious from the manuals if that’s true or if I’m doing it wrong.

When it gets to the guts of midi channels and communication there is only one answer 🚑

I get your points, but would still see the benefit of an all-in-one unit. Maybe I want to control synth and envelope filter effects independently. Maybe I need a reverb or delay some time.

I am thinking about the form factor of the Quad Cortex, Fender Tone Master or the smaller Helix units, but loaded with SA effects. It would need a lot of processing power, but with chips these days, nothing should be impossible. It would have to be expensive, upwards of $1k, and maybe some smart pricing model for individual effects. There is a market in that price range though. Other manufacturers already sell hardware like that, but their effects aren’t as good as SA. :)

There are options in the market to meet players demands. To this day, I'm not a fan of Line 6 for Bass. Couldn't really speak to the QC or any of the current multi effects units (except the current Boss offering, no thanks!) or catering to the consolidated format or customer support for those products.

Source Audio has a fantastic product line that sounds awesome. You should do more research on the capabilities and ask questions to the tech support contact on what can and can't be done with two channels on all but the analog preamp pedals?

There are many a player that just own one SA pedal amongst others. I really have no idea how many individual pedals are in the QC line? I know that Line 6 goes nuts trying to cover every potential eventuality with HX One to the full Helix and all the price points in between and it's a bit confusing.

SA ala carte menu is appealing, tasty and flexible.

You don’t have to be enthusiastic about an idea someone else might find very useful, but it is a little amusing how *against* it you are. :)

Not understanding the question here. Are you wanting to use a different midi channel?
Ok, I think this is in response to my question. I think this will be easier with a hypothetical scenario: let's say I have a board with a Spectrum, Aftershock, and an EQ2. If an SA MIDI adapter is connected to the Spectrum and I have a midi controller that can send PC and CC messages, can I control the Aftershock and EQ2 using the Neurolink bus along channel 2?

And I ask this because I didn't have much luck with it with my UW and Aftershock, but it's not obvious if it's not possible or I didn't have it hooked up correctly or if I was using the wrong cable for the Neurolink connection.

Hopefully that's a clearer question.

ETA: The midi controller can send PC and CC messages on different channels, to be clear.

You

Obviously, as a business idea, with what is out there, a processor as you describe is not likely to do well, due to being a money pit with little ROI.

What has surprised me is how you have done so little research in your questions regarding capabilities you seek and what you desire in your dream processor?

I'm glad to see recent UI developments, a new pedal (that I have no personal use for but is an amazing idea for others) and the level of direct customer support that is provided. I just don't see the need to move from what is working well to a waste of time and money. 😉

Research for me has been a game changer in my rig.

SA168 Midi Adapter
05db367258XXGVDYDCKZSXlw3GCeHIra2lfnbASD.wm-lw.jpg

Something that I was not aware of is that the "adapter" is obviously converting standard midi (IN) from potentially 5 DIN connection (but could be TRS Type A 1/8" midi) to SA TRRS (OUT to Pedal) proprietary midi control. But, the THRU is TRS standard midi, not TRRS. The idea being daisy chaining another SA168 to another SA pedal. (I've used this as a midi connection for a Two Notes Opus IR loader.)

There would be an issue trying to to connect another SA pedal to the THRU connection with a TRRS type cable.

Just an FYI...

Midi through is not a second TRRS out, it’s a midi compliant connection. The to pedal jack. Is propriatary TRRS. So you would need another midi adapter to connect to the control input of a source audio pedal. You could connect to the midi port of the eq2/nemesis/ventris/collider/artifakt/encounter without the need of a second adapter (other than to make the appropriate connection).

Yes, I use the midi through on the SA adapter to go to my HX One. That part is fine. My question was about this:

Basically, is the SA Midi adapter turning the MIDI commands into SA’a Neuro messages? Or are these completely different interfaces from each other?

(In my scenario, imagine replacing “Neuro In” with the 1/8” TRRS connection from the SA Midi adapter at the top of the pedal)

I have personally never used this feature ever. I think I was under the impression that this was a connection to the Nuero Editor rather than a midi thing. I just never had the jacks or need to go down that road in my experience.

For my needs, the TRRS connection with the SA168 and SOLEMAN/(Dual Expression Pedal) have been just fine. I expect similar results for midi communication with the Nuero HUB and three (3) SA pedals being connected.

I love pictures, it's always easier than words alone.
