SPECTOR® Club - Part 23

Hey guys, I need help lol...

I've been trying to get my Legend 6 setup for the last *counting* two hours, and I can't seem to get the action any lower than it came from the store. I've looked at quite a few guides, the Jerzy Drozd one, the one at SpectorWorld.com, the one at onlinebasstuner.com...I'm still sort of lost. Oh, BTW, this is my first setup, so bear with a brother please.....

I've adjusted the truss rod, and I don't really want to do that again; it was almost to the null point before I even tried to turn it or anything. First I went clockwise to flatten the neck some....strings buzzed, and they're already a little high for my taste...so after like 30 mins I went back counter-clockwise to put some relief in the neck. It's measuring about .015mm with a feeler gauge at the 9th fret....but the strings are buzzing like the where when the neck was flat. So does it take longer for the neck to adjust with relief than it does when flattening it? I've read (in this club) that the Spectors can get lower action than Fender's, G&L's etc...mine is probably right where my older Jazz used to be...

Any help is appreciated...:help::help:

Action is affected by the bridge and not the neck relief. I suggest you follow the instructions here [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I was able to get the lowest "action" ever with the help of that page.

Ah, I see how you see it. For me, once you set the optimum neck relief, the bridge does the rest of the work. And you can set optimum relief even with the bridge saddles up at their maximum. Using the press string down at 1st or 2nd and 24th frets method. The string then becomes your straight edge to measure the relief with. A capo or an extra hand is recommended.

I find it makes it a easier set up to do this order.
Neck Relief - Bridge Height - Intonation. Then pick up height if needed.

Yes the page is only a guide but a awesome guide at that.

Wow we had a great practice tonight! Finished up the music for a killer song, my harmonies were good and our drummer was killing it. My new head didn't come in today, so I was still using my old rig... I'm going to have a hard time selling that rig... its so awesome.

I have been feeling down lately and this practice really made me feel better...

You have to get along with the people you play with, but at some point, you work really hard and are a talented person, you deserve to play with someone who is going to put in the work and has some talent around your level. For gosh sakes, he is going to be standing next to your Spectors, he better step up his game!

This is the main problem I have with some of the musicians I have met in Vegas, it seems they are either really nice guys, but can't play to save their lives, or can play and seem to be rotten human beings. I am too old and tired to deal with either. That's why I only really play in the summer back home, where I know tons of great people that can really play.

Very true about the really nice guys that can't play and the a$$holes that can play...oohh and I'm just an average player that BUSTS my balls to learn these damn songs....I don't think this "new" guy is committed showing up late to his second practice....If you get a new job do you show up late the second day of work????...No!!...thanks for the comments.

De-fretted with a De-fret tool (heating the frets with a soldering iron as they were removed.)

Overall happy with the results, there are some fret teeth marks left in the wood which I assume is normal after de-fretting a bass that is 24 years old.

I am still deciding on how I will complete it, with or without lines. I may go with a all black fingerboard look. :cool:
