If the neck is a set neck, then it's a Legend Custom and $400 is a great deal. These listed for $1000 brand new.
They have 3-band active 9v circuits and passive EMG HZ pups. Plus since they are set-neck they have a lot of sustain.
Johnny April of Staind loves these. It's pretty much all he plays.
Spector stopped making them last year and so there's still some "new-old" stock ones out there.
this is a great bass to get as a first Spector.
It did looks like the Custom but was a red or wine color not natural or slate like the website listed. But while I was researching someone bought it 1st. Thanks for the info though guys, I will be more prepared to pull the trigger next time. Like this thread has said all along, I think I have the fever.
Just for info purposes attached is the picture from the ad. Is this a custom? Thanks again, I think there will be a Spector in my future.

HOLY CRAP!! I just bought this bass today!! Through a series of coincidences, I found it this evening online, purchased it in person at the store 3 hours later. They had it listed listed as a Legend Classic 5 but it's neck through, (3 piece neck that runs all the way through the body to the tail of the bass, 2 piece body attached to the neck like wings on either side with what looks to be a quilt laminate over the top, black hardwear, brass nut, EMG HZs, made in Korea).
The salesman told me someone called on the phone and sounded real serious about purchasing it (which I thought was a ******** sales pitch) I told him if he threw in a pack of strings that it might give me more incentive to drive down that close to closing on a Sat night.. He agreed to throw in the strings. I was still on the fence about driving 45 minutes at almost 7pm, so I flipped a coin and now I'm digging the crap out of this bass!!

That's a good find, I've never seen an NS20004 or NS20005 with any kind of figured top, usually it was just the neck-thru center section with maple wings.

Great night... My band had its first concert.... we killed it, I was getting a lot of compliments on my bass, tone, looks, technique... it was great.
Well I got to play a Legend X tonight.... very briefly.... Boy was I impressed... it was very comfortable, the neck was fast and had tone for days..... did I mention it was this one?

What are some honest opinions of the Legend Classics? Are they good bang for your buck or are they like the "Rockbass" of the Spector line (ie. terrible representations of the brand)?
I pulled the trigger, sent payment, and then things went sour.. He has a new paypal account, and they want to hold the funds that I sent for as long as 21 days, but he needs the cash now. He was trying really hard for me to send him the money (before he sends me the bass because he can't afford to pay ALL of the shipping on the bass) and that scared me a little, I had to back off.
Would I be crazy to trade my Euro 5LX for a Euro 4LX-35 and maybe rock a pair of those? I notice that I find myself playing two Genres of music. Either hard rock (which I NEED the low B for) or a lot of punk (and having the low B seems to get in the way).
Maybe I should just get two of these things and have one set for BEAD and the other one EADG. Thoughts?

I mean this in the most respectful way possible: it sounds like you were anxious to get your new bass, and when you got burned by the dealer, you were left with that anxiety. I've been in the same position and almost made a decision I would have regretted. I think if you step back for a day or so and really analyze what it is you want, you'll end up making the decision that sits best for you.
The good news is, one way or the other, you'll have an amazing instrument in your possession!

I can give you an honest opinion. I own USA made Forte and 2 Euro LX models.
I recently purchased a Legend 6, I wasnt expecting much but I am really impressed with the bass. It plays and sounds great.
There are a bunch of Pro bassist who use the Legend series
(Johnny April-Staind, Lance Eric-Bang Tango, Chris Kael-5-Finger Death Punch)
For a while I couldnt understand why, but now that I own one I can see why they would choose them. Keep in mind with Spector its not like other brands where Pros are given basses to play, this is their bass of choice.
The Legend series are made in the same smaller Korean factory that Spector has been using since 1986.

Thanks for that. Wasn't aware that the current models are made in the same Korean factory as always. That kinda gives me a little more peace of mind.
I'm moments away from pulling the trigger on a classic but I just want to make sure I'll be getting my money's worth, especially when other brands are making very top quality affordable models in the same price range (Sterling by Musicman and Warwick Pro Series come to mind).
Unfortunately I can't find a store nearby that stocks any Spectors so I can't try one myself so I'm considering buying online. Are there any quality inconsistency issues I should be wary of with the Classics like with the MIM Fender Jazz basses?

I don't usually like colored strings...BUT that green looks Excellent0 on this bass!!! and good job with the Band!!!
How would I like a Rex 5 compared to my Euro 5LX? I know the preamp and pickups aren't the same, but I'm talking about feel. I looked on the Spector site and it looks like the Rex 5 has a little bit of a slimmer neck, is that true? Will I be happy with a Rex if I buy one?

No, the quality on all of the Spector lines is top notch. The bit thing you don't get on the classic line is NT construction. Still a great bass, just not NT which to some is a big part of what a Spector is about. Having said that, their 5 bolt setup and super tight neck pocket bring the bolt on basses really close to the tone of a NT. Only bolt on bass I have ever owned that didnt require a shim and the neck would only fit in the body from one angle.

Yeah that's a NS2000. They did the quilt thing toward the end of the run, changed the neck a bit too when they did. Great basses. I have a non quilt version, made my rebop take a back seat. Cudos on a really cool bass. I stuck emg's and a haz copy in mine as well as gold hardware. It kicks butt.
One of the best bang for your buck basses out there imo.

In college (and transitioning to my first "real" job") I had some pretty nice basses, but for what they were worth I wasn't getting I felt enough out of them. I ended up selling my very first Modulus and I think a Warwick, and got this model Legend 5 new from a GC. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
It was an excellent bass, even paying "new" prices, and I used it hardcore for about 2 years straight and even recorded on it, etc.. Having played on some "RockBass" instruments, there really isn't a direct comparison even though the pricing can be more "competitive" between those 2 lines. Hell just a week or two ago I was looking at some of the higher end Legend stuff just for the sake of having a Spector that maybe would track better for what I needed. I would have no issue using this model again or any others.
So yeah- the USA stuff amazing but don't feel like you're getting "shortchanged" by "only" playing the Legend stuff. They still play and sound better than a lot of the mass produced USA-made stuff out there. I'd take a Legend Custom 5 over a USA SR5 and that's fact considering I moved my SR5 after only a few weeks of having it.
