It can be done brothers!!

Carlton has the 9 volt haz in all his basses (I know he has a different pickup configuration) and when I was going to order the Forte 6 string, in e-mailing with PJ about it, it was going to be no problem to put the 9 volt Haz in it.

Sweet! Thanks for the info Chris. Yeah, I knew Carlton has the 9V Haz in his basses but since he has a single coil in the neck position, I thought that may have been the reason. You heard it straight from the man though so it's great to know that it is definitely possible.

Well I got in my Spector Legend Custom today. Practically ripped the box apart, threw on new strings, tuned it and plugged it in. Absolutely amazing bass. I have never had a better first impression with a bass than I had with this one. The finish is absolutely amazing, and theres no tone that I can't get with this thing.
Nothing but Spectors for me anymore. Thank yall or curse y'all for turning me on to these lol. Cause I'm never going back.

VERY nice buddy! i have one exactly like yours and i agree. so when you're always broke, thank the clowns here for that ;) i just got an ns-94 from limaguy and it plays like a dream. sounds awesome too. it has the korean 9v haz and emg 35's in it. so i cant wait til sunday at band practice. anyway, congrats and im happy for you. if you want to get some inlays for it, go to ebay and look for creative cuts for some nice inlays. ive got some on mine. check it out. :hyper:

That is PURDY!

Couple of Spector Legend scores with the bubinga tops? Nice!

So far, really liking my Legend Custom 5. The neck is bit flatter in the back than the Rebop 5 I had. It needs a little bit of an action adjustment, but other than that - it's a really, really nice bass. It's sounds a bit more aggressive than my Rebop 4 - I'm still not sure what the 3 band EQ is. I'm going to guess it's EMG?

yep.

Sweet Alex Webster bass man. Yeah, all Spector's come strung with Spector nickel strings so that would explain why your hands started turning black after playing for a while. To be honest, I really like the Spector nickel strings though and will most likely put them on my Euro 5LX when it is time to change the Hi Beams.

I believe there was a younger kid in here a few months ago that had an Alex Webster bass and had pictures of himself playing it at a school recital. It was funny seeing a blood stained bass being played at a school thing like that :)

Seeing those knobs makes me want to drop a BQC into my Euro 5LX. Those are the stock EMG knobs that come with the pre and are really cool looking. And anything thinking it's a lefty bass, he is most likely using a web cam so everything looks backwards on it.

Is that a possibility? I see from the SPECTOR website that the BQC is an option but is it retrofitable? Mine is the Euro5LX-TW if that makes a difference.

I am almost positive that it is retrofittable but if you are using the TW pickups, you will want to keep the existing pots and knobs for the pickups since they are push/pull. Since you will not need the pots and knobs from the pickups, I believe you can just get the BQC Control rather than purchase the full BQC System which is $30 more I believe.

One thing I do want to check though is if the holes need to widened to fit the new pots. I doubt they do but I just want to make sure in case that is something that needs to be done.

Would my existing push/pull pots and knobs be able to operate the stacked bass/treble, and sweepable mid control. I have no issue with giving up the push/pull

I knew they'd look good together. :D

So is this bass just called a Euro 4, or is it technically a LX? And are there graphite rods in the neck? Solid maple wings? Sorry, but I'm very new to Spector-land!

See here for some more information:

They were called Euro4s from '01-'04 when they changed over to the LX branding from what I understand. And yes, maple wings on that beaut. :D Not sure about the interior of the neck. I'm still relatively new to Spector-land myself (but I'm learning!)

I decided to take 2 quick pictures with my iPad showing my Rebop 5 and Euro 5LX side by side so hopefully this helps you out. The Rebop 5 is the natural finish and the Euro 5LX is the blue stain in case you need to know. I hope these help.

Thanks! Not quite what I had in mind but it clearly shows that they are identically shaped aside from the neck joint.

I think I'm gonna convince myself to get a Rebop and put flats on it, since my NS20004 and Euro 4lx both have rounds (nickel on the NS2004, steel DDT's on the Euro) :D Maybe one in white or natural, love how the wood of the neck blends with the wood of the body on yours so it almost LOOKS neck-thru haha

Hey Guys,
I just wanted to let you know that I deleted the listing for my Euro. You were right I think i would regret it later.

I do have some newbie questions regarding the Haz pre that everyone is talking about. The Haz isn't gain adjustable right? Sound impact wise would it be like the non adjustable Tonepump? Sam must have some comparison soundclips right? What are your likes and dislikes of the Haz?
Thanks,
Brent

The HAZ is not gain adjustable, but I didn't find it to be overly hot neither underpowered. Just works.
IMO/IME that helps make the classic "Spector sound". It's a part of the puzzle. My Brooklyn when recording pretty much needed 0 in the way of treatment, it just "fit" in a mix. I can only imagine what a J/J bass with the HAZ would sound like... :hyper:
It just gives you that inherent growl that Spectors are known for and everything else tries to sound as good as... :smug::smug:

Thanks Guys!
Is that a pretty big mod to do? I'm certainly not is a rush. I really like the tonepump and have found a good gain setting.
Brent

Correct, the Haz doesn't have an adjustable gain. Comparing the sound impact between the Haz and non adjustable tonepump is night and day due to the tonepump having a super hot output and the Haz being much lower.

As a comparison, I have an adjustable tonepump in my Euro 5LX and the 18v Haz in my NS-5XL. To get them to a similar output, I had to adjust the tonepump down to about 30% to bring them to a volume level that is pretty much the same. When I plug in my Rebop 5 that has a non adjustable tone pump, I literally need to turn everything down because it is so much louder than everything else. I plan on replacing that very soon though so I can have all 3 of my Spectors at a similar output level.

If it is in your Euro, the holes might have to be widened a bit, but not much. I put the 9 volt Haz in a Euro Doug Wimbish signature I used to have, My tech said it was very easy, he didn't have to widen the holes and only charged me $20 to put it in.

It made the bass sound much Smoother IMHO. I would have never got rid of that bass, but I just didn't like the feel of the smaller nut, big hands I guess.

Regarding the Haz vs. the Tonepump. I see Donny posted my comparison clips, thanks. :bassist:

The 9V Haz is just amazing. :bassist: The Tonepump is a close 2nd. The Tonepump is a bit more "airy" sounding and it does have more low end and the treble gain is at a higher freq then on the Haz.

As John mentioned, I also have the trim in my Tonepump at 30% now to match the output of the Haz in my Forte and NS-2.

The Haz has tons of mid range punch and growl.

It is the big part of what makes gives the classic Spector Tone.

The Tonepump was designed to get that tone and it comes pretty close.

I did the Haz installation myself. It comes with everything you need including a new jack. No soldering needed
(See photo below)

You will need to prep the pick ups wires to get them in the post of the Haz board.

As far as the Euro pot holes. My Cherry Euro LX has 8.5mm pot holes which are just barely too small for the 9mm pot shaft of the Haz board. From what I understand its hit or miss, you may or may not need to make them bigger.

Chris, you got yourself a cool tech if he only charged you $20 for the install. nice :hyper:

I made a step by step instruction sheet if anyone orders a Haz and needs it let me know.

Below is what comes from Spector when you order a New Haz

Rick,

If you have TW Pickups and they are separate Vol for each Pickup.

You can get an EMG BQC Control. which will just be the Tone Section. Stacked Bass/Treble and Stacked Mid sweep and level.

Don't get a EMG BQC System, that includes a vol and blend pot which you don't want that if you have the TW pickups. (you will loose the push/pull option.)
