Spector Neck Though 4 string bass - eBay (item 280702129814 end time Jun-29-11 06:13:44 PDT)

Well she arrived yesterday, well before the 30-32 days shipping. I'm a little disappointed, but not totally. The good: The finish on the bass is in excellent condition for it's age with the exception of the buckle rash they pointed out in the auction. Frets have almost no wear. Hardware is in good shape except a little tarnishing on the bridge. The bad: Pretty big bow in the neck. Broken corner of the E side of the nut. String is staying in for now, but will need to be replaced. No sound on plugging it in, sounded like the battery was moving around so I opened up the cavity and found one of the terminals on the battery had corroded and fallen off. The bigger bummer is that the HazCopy preamp had been taken out. (should have requested pics). New battery, plug it in, still no sound. Wiggle the cable, it's a bad jack.

So, anyway, I tweaked the truss rod and did a quick clean up. Neck came in pretty decent, we'll see when I get home tonight. Frets are pretty new so a decent fret level should dial it in pretty good.
Probably jumped a little too soon on this one, but I don't think it's the worst deal.
Emailed the seller with my issues. How should I handle it? Or is it my fault for not asking questions?
Either way, I'm pretty happy with a bass that can be fixed up nice.

I've always thought eBay is a double edged sword . The seller should have said non orig preamp . But what if the seller doesn't know any better ???? Ignorance is no excuse on their part , but pics of the bass would have shown what they didnt know about . I've asked about preamps before and had replies from sellers like "what is that" .....

Prolly won't get any resolution from the seller , but paypal buyer protection will help . For what you paid it should be orig and working . That falls into the not as described category to me ...

From dealing with ebay before here is some advice.

If the seller lists it as No Returns Accepted... then ebay will tell them not to accept a return.
BUT.... the seller is required to list the product properly. In the listing they said...
"the bass plays amazing and looks great."

Technically the bass is not playing amazing if the jack is bad and they didn’t describe the broken corner in the nut near the E string.

What did you ask the seller to do? I think it is fair and reasonable to ask for some $$ refunded since you will have to lay out $$ to get it to "play amazing" as they described.
Keep copies off all you interaction between you and the seller...(Keep the interaction in the ebay messages, not private email) If the seller doesn’t respond or refuses then you can file a claim with ebay buyer protection. Then they get involved and mediate. Take photos of any of the problems.

A NS-2A I purchased in May from ebay had a broken corner on the nut near the E string also and it actually just broke off last night. I have a temp nut on there now and will be ordering a new one soon.

Did you evenutally get it to have sound?
Is the neck straight now since you adjusted, is it twisted? (This as you know is the main thing.) Everything else can be fixed fairly cheaply.

False description .... hard to say but I'd ask for partial refund or file a claim with your CC company. Seller has an obligation to accurately describe item or be ready for the repercussions.

I would ask for 150.00 refund and would settle for 100 . Not having the haz copy pre would be a huge fail to me ...

Looking at their feedback, they seemed to be misleading to someone else that gave gave them negative feedback. They said in the comments that they offered a full refund so I think you should try for that or like everyone else said, ask for money back.

Do you remember the dimensions? There was a mis-sized one on my NS-2A that finally bit the dust. Based on that one, making up for the difference I am thinking it should be 43mm X 8mm X 6mm ?

I got it to make sound if I held the cable in exactly the right position. I wrote to the seller and told them the issues and was going to wait to hear back before I tell them what I'm looking for. Money back would be ideal because the neck straightened up nice and I would want to change the nut to brass anyway. The preamp thing sucks because that was a big deal for me. But I was able to find one before and put it in my NS4CRFM so maybe I'll get lucky again.
I'll keep you posted on what I hear back. Thanks for the opinions because I have a bad habit of letting people get away with stuff....

Yeh but AJ is very good and fast. He's made a total of 4 brass nuts for me so far. You need to ask him the story behind the name. It's a hoot! Sorry to hear about you gents bad luck with eBay. But...I don't think anyone got burned as bad as I did back in March on eBay. :scowl: I won a bid on a brand new Euro 5 LX still in box, never opened, fresh from the factory, and after bidding closed and I paid, the guy never sent it to me! But eBay reimbursed me within a week. My winning bid was $920.00! On a $2975.00 brand new bass! I get better condition and better price Spector basses from GC. Good luck!!!

AJ also has the manuf. Dimension spec. guide.

Got a question for you diehard Spector guys. I am going to check out a Spector bass tomorrow to trade my Rickenbacker 4001 for. Here is what I know about the bass:

The bass is an 88 or an 89. It was made as the Kramer era was going out of business. The cnc body is an NS2A, which would be the import, but the rest of the parts (Neck, electronics, hardware) are all US. The bass is all black, including the hardware. The neck is rosewood with the tomahawk inlays, brass nut, PJ pickups, HAZ-Lab EQ. The guy I am buying from is a member here and he seems to know his stuff, but I just wanted to get some other opinions on this bass. He said there are about 50 or so of these transitions made that he knows of. Anybody else have one or know anything about these?

Before anyone gets excited. These new bridges are for LEFTY Spector models only and ARE NOT backwards compatible. Meaning they will be installed on new LEFTY models, but will not fit the routing of older models.
These bridges are larger than the standard Euro bridge.

WHICH MEANS... you can't get one, flip it and use it on a right-hand standard version.

There is a intonation screw "fix" in the works for the Euro Series Standard right-hand models. More on that in a little bit.

To make sure there will be no issues with the confusion this could cause, these bridges will be available on NEW LEFTY Euro Models ONLY. These bridges will not be for sale separately.

...and apparently are now puting a set screw on both sides of the bridge like the USA's (and Legends stangely enough).

So even owners of current Lefty Euro's can't retro fit this new bridge?!?
Is the new "Righty" version going to be "larger" also, so that current Euro's can't be retro fit with it either?!

I have a question about euro lx black hardware. When you choose an option to have black hardware on euro lx basses, bridge is not brass but aluminum and nut is plastic or aluminum too. How does this affect the sound of the basses?

Please tell me the righty versions will retrofit the older Euros/Rebops and be up for sale separately. As this is really the only thing I'd want to improve on my 5 String, a bridge that's easier to intonate.
