Wilfer's first version of the Streamer was an near identical copy (even down to headstock shape) of the NS. He started making it BEFORE getting any approval or OK from Ned or Stuart....so until such time as WW makes things right, I feel it's the least I can do to show respect and support my friends. :ninja:

Good to see this all laid out....they should make it compulsory education for all elec. bassists, right alongside the major and relative minor scales (but before extended voicings :D )

I knew that the design was Ned's, I was never really sure how Warwick got to use it. I didn't realise that WW weren't holding up their end of the deal.

Glad I use a Spector, then!

And of course Todd is right... any SPECTOR dealer can order you a Wimbish or Ian Hill or any other SPECTOR bass as a special order color, etc...

If you order one through Link Removed, you also have the distinction of ordering from Mr. Todd Cooke... who knows his SPECTORs better than anyone in the World outside of Stuart and PJ.

Guitar House is also a Stocking USA SPECTOR Dealer... so if any of you are ever in the Tulsa area you have to check it out. You can meet a legend in the SPECTOR community AND see a beautiful guitar shop with a bunch of USA SPECTORs.

And if you have a guitar habit like I do, he also carries some really choice acoustic and electric guitars.

I did this graphic and updated the Euro Finish Section of the website last week, so not sure how many of you have seen it.

This is THE OFFICIAL finish list.

So you have the STANDARD FINISHES... these are "STOCK" finishes that are NOT special order.

Then you have the SPECIAL ORDER FINISHES... it means what it says.

Some dealers like Bass Central will order a SPECIAL ORDER finish instrument for their in-stock inventory. So that's why BC has some funky basses like the green Doug Wimbish in stock.

Any SPECTOR dealer can order that bass for you or any of the other colors you see on the list below.

Lastly you have the Exotic Wood finishes. And those pretty much speak for themselves.

So to reiterate what Todd said, when you see strange color combinations in BC's inventory it's not something done just for them or that you can only get through them... it's something they ordered as a special order just to place in their inventory.

I'm pretty sure I pointed this out to you all back after NAMM in January.

In the photo below... ignore the three guys cheezing for the photo... they are PJ Rubal on the left... Brad Savage, the bassist for The Band From TV in the center, and my goofy self on the right.

What Brad is holding is the PERFECT example of a Czech Factory Special Order...

It's a LEFTY, Euro4LX-EX (Gloss Zebrawood top)
But here's where it gets fun...
The neck is a Doug Wimbish, Ian Hill hybrid. It's the skinny, narrowest neck to ever leave the Czech Factory.

Since Brad is a lefty, think about who makes lefty basses out there... One of the top brands is Ibanez. Which have crazy-thin and skinny necks. I know, I've owned one before.

Brad was comfortable with that so the only way to get the neck close to what he preferred was to do the Ian Hill front-to-back thin neck with the narrower 1.5" nut Wimbish fingerboard.

And guys, that bass had a really thin neck.

So if you really want something that's not a stock option, ask your friendly SPECTOR dealer.

Wow, thanks guys! Very useful information. Now my hardest decision will be to choose between the Poplar Burl top and the Blue Wimbish finish.

I recently learned of the Spector/Warwick situation as well - after originally falling in love with Ned's design on a Streamer! (way back when they first showed up in music shops)...

Years later when I found out who Ned Steinberger was, I assumed he had done design work for both WW & Spector... but I understand the story ain't as pretty as that.

someone @ WW definitely chose well to emulate one of the most beautiful body styles ever made - and IMO, it was part of what made WW a respected name in bass building.

As a Spector & WW owner - I can't knock the quality of any of the basses I've owned, but it would be nice to see credit &/or monetary compensation given wherever it's due.

Wow. That is stunning.

I just got my Spector out again after several years of semi-retirement. The main reason I retired it was not because of the sound. I freaking love the sound of it. And it sure as hell wasn't because of the looks. Spector basses are always just drop-dead gorgeous to look at. Mine is this very dark marble-like blue. It looks black but it is actually not. It's hard to see the grain though except in very bright light.

No, I had to leave it home for a long time because it was too heavy and left me with a sore shoulder. I may have hit on a strap arrangement that finally fixes this problem.

I have an NS-20004 which is the Korean model. I bought it in 2000 but I understand it probably was actually made in 1998. Though I got it brand-spanking new. Anyway, I was wondering what yours weighs, roughly. Mine tips the scales at 11 pounds, which is about 3 pounds heavier than any of my Jazz or Rickenbacker basses.

I ordered a red one originally. When my reseller took several weeks to come through I started to wonder what was going on until Stuart Spector called me, myself, at my desk at work, to apologize and told me one was being shipped because he'd taken mine to a show (or something like that, as I recall). The fact that he reached out to me personally made a lifelong impression on me.

The bass is just amazing to play. The entire body of it feels almost soft and silky. I have just gotten wind of the Coda model and I've set my sights on it as the next must-have bass. The idea of a J-bass clone made by Spector makes me salivate. Especially now that I'm getting back into my NS-20004 and realizing what an incredibly finely made and designed instrument it is.

In comparing the body carves of my Spector to my EBMM before I sold it, it's amazing to me just how comfortable the NS design is to play. The EBMM has the tradional Fender-esque cutaways, while the NS of course has a simple concave back with the rounded top. It's simple, but damn, it's so much more comfortable. It just seems to meld to your whole body, where as Fender style carves kind of mold to you at an angle. Anyway, it just kind of hit me this weekend how much more comfortable the NS style is to play.

So does this only apply to euros? Last time I checked the rebop 5 on the website string it said it was only available in black cherry burst.
