Squier Vintage Modified Precision V: who's got one?

They were being made at the Cor-tech plant, and small runs cost a lot under contract.
This would be my guess. The Vintage Modified P V's appeared to be the only bass in the VM line that Guitar Center didn't stock. I would imagine that GC is probably one of the top sellers of inexpensive brands such as Squier.
As far as I've seen, a regular P bass hasn't been trendy for the 20 years I've been playing. Those who like them get them, those in the know got the Squier, but I can't imagine it being easy to sell a niche Squier.
But boy am I glad I got mine when they first came out. I never had a P before and sure don't see a reason to upgrade. Which probably doesn't make Fender that happy.

Yeah, a friend of mine let me use his US fender P5. I really liked it and was saving the money to buy one new. One day I strolled into GC and a squire was hanging on the wall. I didn't know at the time squire was producing a P5 so I checked it out and loved it. I still prefer it to the US fenders.
Sorry, they don't. I got one which was on display for 300€ and I remember the forst time I recorded it I was like "Holy shift, what a growl!!! This thing is awesome!!!" Insanely beautiful.
I know. I bought a white one. Painted it sherwood green and matched the headstock. Put a replacement Squier decal on it. Replaced the tuners with Fender ultra lights. Swapped the pickup with a USA Fender 5 string P pickup. Swapped the pots with CTS 500K and added an orange drop cap. Used it for a few gigs, great bass. Sold it to a friend when I thinned the herd, now I'm running out of space again. Winning?
Has anyone stripped off the sunburst finish? Mine has a couple cracks in the finish and a chip missing from where it was dropped before I got it. The chip is in the black part of the finish and is yellow underneath. So, this has me thinking about stripping the finish off and painting it. Unless someone wants to trade my sunburst for a red one

Deadly hard, and clogs sandpaper like an SOB- I strongly recommend doing a solid color re-fin, rather than stripping it all the way back for a natural finish...

Going to re-finish it with Color-Tone Blonde nitro, whenever I finally get around to it..the white finish came off in large chunks, with a grey primer underneath, which I had to ( and still am) hand sand off, but it comes off pretty quick .The body is a 3 piece body, and the center block even has some flame going on..I'm debating on whether to put the original neck back on ( hate the super-thick poly finish)..I'll post some photos, when I finally get it all back together..

I've got both a Squier VM P5 and a Fender American Pro P V with the stock V mod pickup. I know this might sound like blasphemy but in many ways I like the sound of the Squier pickup better.

I don't have a Squier 5 string, but I prefer the 4 string version over the MIM. I ended up over-improving it from a resale standpoint, but I think I'd have to be spending over $2000 to find a 4 string JB that I'd like better.
You should look into a Bacchus jazz. New they are under 2k and I prefer them to Sadowsky.
You know... It's funny you should mention that. I ran into a used one last week as I began my search. I came across one and wasn't familiar with the brand. Perhaps because the setup was awful the one I played felt like a cheaper brand (believe it or not) and it took me all of 2 minutes to put it back on the rack. Maybe it was the setup (and the place) that really turned me off. I'd gone there specifically to check out a Godin 5 string and the Godin was completely unplayable [I don't know how that store sells any instruments!].
It was just this afternoon that I stopped a the local GC and checked out whatever basses they might have on hand. No Squiers there (unbelieveably) but a couple American Elites. I had just come from the repair place minutes away as I took my newly acquired Ibanez BTB675 there to be checked out for setup or structural issues so I had a fresh feel for my Ibanez for comparison. I thought the MIM J Bass was ok, but felt my upgraded Squier was its These two Elite basses weren't set up too badly, but if I had $2000 to spend on a bass, it certainly wouldn't be a Fender. Now I'm curious and I've got to find a 5 string Squier to check out because I did not like the Elites' "Modern C" neck very much at all.

Bright idea.
This bridge is from a SIRE Marcus Miller V7-5 and is high mass (solid brass saddles) and very well made.
I have one available for my VMP5 as I had swapped it for a Sandberg-5 on my V7-5 (with no tone or sustain benefit if I may say).
Same string spacing (18 mm), same 6 screws spacing (17.4 mm) and alignment.
Smaller in size (97mm x 54mm) than the Kickass.
The issue is that the body screws in the Sire bridge are 10 mm closer to the strap button. If I drill new screw holes in the body, they will remain seen if I ever put back the original Squier bridge.
Alternatively, I can drill (6) new screw holes in the bridge to match the existing holes in the VMP5 body (in-between the through-body string holes, see pictures below).
But the issue mentionned above is also a benefit as there is more room behind the saddles for silk and coiling than on the Squier bridge.
Sold to the idea.
