EDIT: Mine's a 2007, so it's got the ceramic pickups and the 3-band EQ. The pickups can sure be aggressive when I want them to, but it doesn't take much adjustment to make it warm and full - and that's how I usually have it set. I love pickup position 4 (inner coils) with the treble and mids tuned down a little. But when the bass tone needs to be the 800 pound gorilla in a song, position 1 with a little boost of the bass and mids turns it into that gorilla! :D

I've seen a lot of posts here on TB from people saying that the 3-band models just aren't the same as the 2-bands and only the 2-band gives you the true Stingray sound. I've never owned a 2-band so I can't say, but I can tell you this bass just sounds fantastic.

Having had both the 2 band and 3 band, I prefer the 3 band any day of the week. I suspect some people have an affinity to the 2 band based on the fact that Leo's original design was a 2 band. I think if Leo would have lived longer he would have created the 3 band anyway. YMMV

So here's mine (and some toes apparently). It matches my tattoo, or my tattoo matches it. I don't know anymore.

I'll probably start to sound like a broken record about wanting to try/buy a fretless SR5 :laugh: Most of my time lately has been spent with my fretless G&L. It's a fantastic bass but the tone of my SR5HH is home to me so I had to spend an hour with it today :bassist:

Great combo!! I have an 88 as well. I was trying to sell it last year, then I woke up! LOL!!!

Hard call... Tortoise guard with a black pickup cover. Or go Old School MM with the white guard. The white guard might over shadow the blue though.

Question for my Stingray 5 brethren- if you didn’t have a 4 string Ray, would you grab a 3 band, or a Stingray Classic 4 to go with your 5er?

I now have two 5 string basses, and my other 5er just isn’t keeping up with my Stingray 5.

Old and less expensive is my MO, so that leaves the Specials out of the equation.

I’m probably the wrong person to ask but I do love the 2-band EQ, so I’d vote for either a Classic (my personal favorite) or a regular 2-band ‘Ray.

Not under the illusion that they actually sound meaningfully different, but it’s easier for me to dial in the tone I want on a 2-band. If you like the slightly brighter Flea style ‘Ray tone, the 3 banger probably gets you there quicker, though they cover mostly the same territory.
