Stingray 5 Club!

Just a photo of mine from this past weekend:

My first Stingray special, just picked it up a few days ago.. put some Dr pure blues 45-130 and man what a tone..
I’ve had an 88, 92 & 93 SR5 in the past, and loved them, but at times the highs could be a tad harsh, especially with the Alnico pup.. I’m still a fan of all stingray 5 eras, but I’m really liking the smoother treble response.. This one takes nice buzz free low action.. I’m diggin the light weight too.. I’m very impressed and I bet it will be killin it in a live mix. I have several different amps, but this thing really shines thru my 80’s era Gk 400rb & Glockenklang cabinets.

That’s a beaut! As nice as some of the flashy finishes are, if I was getting a special I’d go for black or natural.

Thanks! I’ve always loved the black/ maple Stingrays.. and I’m loving the tone of the stingray special… I have several festivals coming up later this year and look forward to hearing this thing cranked up !

Killer looking bass! Love the white / maple… I haven’t played an HH yet or Bongo, but i bet I’d love em. Hey I see you are from Australia, very cool ! I’m a huge fan of Teramaze btw & ol Wayne Jones as well, Good day mate !
G'day back at ya @Afc70..here is another pic for you..many times ive posted it on TB..it is a great bass as I love the white and maple too. I have found the HH pup config to be quite versatile as well.

I’ve been a Stingray fan since I saw the Louis Johnson instructional video when I was 15 in 1985 but the Stingray 5 was my first Stingray and has always been my favorite EBMM bass for the better part of the past thirty years. I truly feel that it is the P Bass of 5 strings. It has in my opinion the best damn 34 inch scale B string and has so since it’s inception. I know there is a Stingray and a Stingray Special club that are apparently inclusive of the big brother.... but I think the Mighty SR5 deserves its own thread if there is in fact not one already? Anyone else?

PS I’m not really into the number thing but I’m not opposed to it either. If we get that far and anyone else wants to step up and do the number thing, that’d be great. :).
This is my favorite video. Tony playing with Peter Gabriel. Anyone who thinks a SR5 can't sound warm has never seen this video. I'm pretty sure he sets the pup selector in the center position (single) and rolls off quite a bit of the treble and mids with the bass left centered.

I often play in the center position. My Pre Special SR5(in my avatar) has no volume drop in that position. My Special has a little drop which is normal, but still sounds great, IMO. The EQ on the Special is the secret sauce to get you where you want. More musical than the Pre Specials in my experience.

Doesn't look like it. The video is a bit blurry, but at about 3:30 or so there's a good shot of Tony and it looks like the selector switch is all the way back.

Love these basses. This is my 2003 SR5 with translucent finish that shows the grain of the ash body. It really rips and the tone can range from super mellow and burpy to snarling and gritty. Amazing how versatile this bass can be.

The other is an OLP Tony Levin Sig. I thought I'd sell this one once I got the SR5, but it's got a different sound, and I'm still digging it.
