Stoner/Doom Bassists thread 31: We never sleep

dirty or clean?

did you ever contemplate the bass amp idea. if you like the SVT so much i doubt a similar scheme to replace it will be better. Might be a nice idea to try something different

it stays clean for sure, unless i dig into it and thats always gonna have grit to it.

im gonna stick with my vintage SVT for now, probably re cap it and tube it with some nice tubes and just use that. im gonna sell my VR as well.

no prob man, thats a logical move considering the dough, and didnt you say twins were on the way?

Nod inducing, very cool! I was just talking to someone about the bass on that song. Really dig it. Ill have to fire up the bong and listen again when I get home.

Oh and yes, records.

Thanks, bongs make it better...bong make many things better.

I really like it because I get to do one of my favorite things on bass...syncopate with the drummer. I only play one note during the whole jam part, a low C# and then the 5th fret octave. Then I play rhythmically, try to match my bass to the drum beat. It's cool, me and the drummer go off and do our own thing while my guitarist solos however he wants, always turns out different.

it is, and i think its G. i hummed into my tuner on my phone and got between F# and G, and when they slam into those strings it gets that awesome warble that makes tuning low sound so great. but its down there for sure haha.

makes me wanna play in E0 lol

Some of us can do that in Eb, part of my secret ha ha ha

I was gonna stay out of it but I know all of these guys. Some pretty well and some really well. Andy was unhappy in Black Pyramid for a long time. The band had a lot of internal problems and still does from what Clay (the drummer) has been telling people. Always getting help was a lot of Andy's problem. He really cleaned up his act a few years ago to the point that he wasn't drinking anymore at all or doing tons of drugs like he used to. He was just unhappy with his life working dead end jobs and just living to play music and would talk about that a lot when you hung out with him. He didn't like playing in Black Pyramid and had talked about quitting for awhile, plus all the ******** in the band with Gein's affairs and breaking up his friends marriages and **** really ****ed with him. Some crazy **** happened to him at his job (which was really sketchy) and that was really just the tipping point. Psychiatrists and doctors just put him on more medicine for depression and stuff until he was really overmedicated and it ****ed him up a lot. It changed him and it was sad. He started finally getting better around the time he just quit taking all his medicine and started taking control of his life. He was in pretty ****** health at that point to because he lost weight constantly from some of the medication.

I guess he was acting crazy online on forums and with the band but in real life he suddenly just got his **** together around that time and was a suddenly a really happy and positive person and he has been since. He seems to think the whole thing is just funny and that people gave that much of a ****. He never really said he was quitting music to people only not having it be the focus of his life like it used to be, he's been playing and jamming with his friends and I've played with him a couple times even. He just said that he was sick of planning his whole life around bands and being a certain way only because he was in bands. He did sell off and even gave away to people a lot of his gear but he still has **** tons of it.

Everything kind of clicked for him in his life and he's got a great job now doing something with psychiatry and helping people who are mentally ill. He plays with Palace In Thunderland again because those guys asked him to and he doesn't take it very seriously. When Palace In Thunderland broke up before it was nothing like with Black Pyramid I don't know where that came from, he had wanted to do another band besides Palace In Thunderland (which ended up being Black Pyramid) and those guys didn't agree so they ended up cancelling the Palace In Thunderland tour and then Andy quit and did Black Pyramid like right afterwards.

People ask him if he thinks people will want to know what he is doing with Palace In Thunderland now because he was in Black Pyramid and he just says "I hope not." The Black Pyramid guys take themselves really seriously to the point of being real pricks to some people sometimes and I think that ****ed him up a lot too trying to be like that when he was in that band. If you knew him well then that's just not him and he was turning into a real prick also playing in that band. He was always a real goofy jokester guy before. I think he sees that now and Palace In Thunderland has always been kind of like this inside joke thing where they are just ****ing around with each other and having fun. A lot of people around here don't like Black Pyramid because of the way it changed him and because of the other guys too. All I know is that he said he said for years how Black Pyramid wasn't fun for him and since he quit the band he hasn't been a dick to people anymore is fun to be around people again and it's been inspirational to a lot of people here how he just kind of got all the bad elements out of his life once he stopped that band. I don't know about the online stuff other than what I've heard but all I can say is that I think he just stopped taking the online world seriously anymore and started living in real life.

This one!

you guys see that long post in the old thread?

haha just read it. no idea who any of those people are but just from my experience with flaky/unstable people in music, i have 0 tolerance for that ****. if youre a ****ed up unstable person, you shouldnt be in a band until you get it fixed (unless youre scott weiland and everything you touch is gold lol). dealing with people like that drains everything out of you and makes it so difficult to enjoy just playing.

I just love the chodes who state in their own sale ad that they've priced it correct and they will not entertain lowball offers.

i dont like when people act like dicks, but sometimes i understand where theyre coming from. theres a lot of idiots on craigslist who will offer completely stupid prices to the point where its just annoying. you list something for 2k, they seriously ask if youll take 500, knowing full well what the prices are haha.

True Story: I started a punk band when I first moved here. Going pretty good. Get the line up solid and the singer turns into a massive jerk after I missed practice the day of the show, because my car broke down in 1 Degree weather and I was waiting for the tow truck.

He said something to the effect of, "you better be at practice because we are changing the part to XXX song."

Why are you changing a song the day of a show?

I show up to the venue, have the guitar player show me (two notes different), and we nail the gig. Singer threatens to kick me out due to missing practice right before. Said something like, "these are the rules of the punk band, you have to be at every practice." The singer was already friends with the drummer (they worked at GC together) and the guitarist was good friends with the drummer (friends since high school) so it was them vs me. I quit the next day after the drummer told me they wanted to fire me for missing practice.

People suck... :ninja:

Yeah but you gotta know what to expect when you get into Craigslist, its not like you can say "hey, no spammers or scammers" and not get any. If you say firm price, thats fine, but people who say "obo, but no lowball offers" are being ridiculous. Say I listed something at 2k, but you offered $500... that negotiation could eventually lead to a $1300 sale that makes both parties happy, if time passed and buyer found more $$ / seller became more desperate. But to open yourself to negotiation but then say "no lowball offers" isn't really doing anything except contradicting yourself. Buyers like me, sitting with cash in hand, skip over the ad because we're tired of arguing with idiots who don't mean what they say in their ads or who negotiate on a whim or depending on their mood that day.
