I say sell the 4pro and pickup a couple of used pf800s.
You'll have allot more wattage at 4 ohms.

Still sound like Ampeg. Might even be lighter if you racked them up.


Have you had that 4pro looked at? Could you have a bad tube?

That show last night dragged on. I did notice like every punk drummer used nearly the same pattern on every song with very marginal differences.

My main complaint about punk.

Id say more traditional ampeg tone than the sterile IMO tone of the pro series.

My main complaint about punk.

Yea it's not really my genre, but a little attention to drums and the mix would really help. All guitarists had a half stack and solid state head cranked, while every bass player but one had a 1x15 combo (had a markbass and that weird mesa boogie 4x10with a 15" in the center) so with such a volume discrepancy some simple but calculated EQ'ing would have really made stuff stand out.

I think the Pro series gets a bad rap with that. Just have to turn up the gain, and use the compressor, really thickens up the tone.

I do need to get it looked at for sure. It could be a preamp tube on the out I guess. I will definitely consider that. I use a pf500 at one of our rehearsal spaces and it is every bit as loud as one side of the 4 pro. I had considered a pf800 for the inevitable amp blow mid show if I keep at what I am currently doing. Also, I am not faithful to the Ampeg tone. I would love to pick up an SVT but I really don't want to move it. P**** s*** I know but I use my back a lot at work, haul some heavy ass cabs and would rather not destroy it more than I have to.

I don't know why I decided to buy this 4 pro. I think I was just desperate for wattage. After my first show with these guys I saw how far 500w and an 810 would get me... which was not far at all. I literally couldn't hear myself at all and had to rely solely on muscle memory and visual cues. I did get the amp for $500 so it shouldn't be to difficult to recover that.

I have been thinking about grabbing a Carvin BX1600. It has numbers similar to the 4 pro but at 20% of the weight, a warranty and (I have heard) a more honest power rating. Really its either that or a LARGE power amp that I can just keep "cranked" at like 3 or 4. Either way I am at a point financially where I can get my 2000s up and running and then I will be able to run two amps via ABY.

But I do have access to a stupidly large selection of bulk cable and connectors if anyone needs something custom done.

Something 16 gauge or so. That is flexible, and doesnt have too much coil memory. There is only one option at my local GC and it is super thick, and way too expensive. No going to pay $45 for a 3' cable.

A second amp may be all it takes to sort you out, that gets you two 4 ohm cabs with the 4pro bridged into one. Although if I wanted a second amp to complement the 4pro if pick something with a grindy power section like a 400rb, or a hartke MOSFET 3500. The sunn wouldn't be my first choice betting an ultra linear design (IIRC).
