Designed with lots of headroom, so it "doesn't" distort.
Now that doesn't mean it won't, just that it was designed against it.
Oh ok. I was under the impression that it would hit 120w with less than 1% distortion. I was also under the impression that a 2000s hit 120w at around 4 or 5 on the master volume. I only say that because mine absolutely distorts when it is pushed hard. When it is at 8-10 on the volume it has a very pleasant grind.
Thicker agreed, but the compressor makes it quieter unless you crank it up elsewhere. If you are struggling to be heard, I'd try a couple songs with all compression off.
Dime the pre and adjust volume on the main with GK400RB for grind. Dime the main and adjust volume on the pre for clean. Don't let the spec fool you. It's a bitchen head and can be found for only a couple hundred bucks for a used one. Probably never fail on you. Plus LOUD.

To those of you who are suggesting a 400RB, would a 700RB or 1001RB be better? I am assuming they are essentially all the same amp with different power sections, so is your referral based upon used price? The limited experience I have with GK gear has left me with the opinion that they are rather sterile and thin sounding. I am probably wrong though.
Ive heard that you need to have a gk basically cranked to get the best sound out of one. Ive never owned one though. But justin chancellor uses 2x 2001rb and id say his live tone is pretty far from thin.
The best thing I like from GK is the old RB series. 800RB is beast. The modern 700 and 1001 and 2001, have a more scooped sound. If you like Flea, he used the 1001 RB for years.
I wouldn't call either sterile or thin.
I don't have experience with either of those, but they are different power and preamp than the original 400rb and 800rb.

Had to replace my sold (bought new, 1986?) 400RB because it was kind of my mid price range reference amp. It's matched up with my 215 E140 JBL cab, works like a champ. Never let me down and was always loud enough. That rig has been the back line host on several loud hardcore gigs. Main reason I'm suggesting the 400rb is it's pricepoint, build quality and dimed tone are all good factors. Your probably going to push it in my first suggested setup diming the pre. Youll probably like it. Oh and it takes well to dirt pedals. Go bigger and you may be too loud before the grind settles in.

FYI... Contracted Allparts about the strap locks. Schaller has admitted to shipping defective product. They have new ones in stock now. Good thing I registered with them for a record of my transaction. Now I just need to fill out a RMA form and they will send me some new units, course I have to ship these to them on my dime.
Apparently the tooling was not checked and was cutting the threads incorrectly so the nut was simply too big.
