Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I'll probably use my Ampeg 810 and 610. I have access to a Mesa 215 but im not in love with how bright it is. I'm keeping my eye out for a cheap older USA Ampeg 810 on the craigslist. Or a heritage 810.

The meatsmoke is kind of a dark sounding head imo. I have to eq quite a bit of mids back in to get mine sounding "flat" to my ears. The 2x15 might sound good with it. Though they are fender tone stacks if i remember correctly.

So I feel like one of my guitards has been short changing us. He's been using a Peavey butcher or Sunn defender into an old Marshall 412. I saw his rig for his other band last night:

The 610s definitely have their own voice. While its not the same as an 810 its in the same ballpark imho. My personal taste for Ampegs is the USA stuff. Ive noticed the new asian 810s are noticeably lighter weight, not as bassy, and can be scratchy/noisy.

Your SVT 4 PRO should be able to run two 810s without breaking a sweat...

sure, but more nomsayin.

Good MDT practice tonight, we have our set whittled down to a solid 10 (six EP tracks and four others) for the next gig. Snapped a pic of the ol' Namesake Bass while I was packing up.

At work, pants moist.

One thing I keep forgetting to mention from my jam last saturday: I used my LH1000 and the space's cab, which was a newer ampeg 8x10. I didn't realize how much those cabs have a "baked in" tone. Compared to my normal pair of ported 1x15"s the ampeg was definitely more mid-focused and noticeably dirtier-sounding. I must have been getting some breakup from the drivers because the LH1000 is CLEAN amp but with the 8x10 it sounded closer to the classic ampeg sound. The cab was rated for 800W and I didn't move my volume knob past 3 so I don't think I was pushing the cab too hard. It was beat to poopie on the outside so maybe some of the drivers aren't in the best shape? Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Ibanez's take on the fanned fret instrument. Not much cheaper than the Combustion line, and it is 35.5" scale, not 37". I will still check them out if they are available locally anywhere. I wish they made a 4 string.

IMHO most of the "Ampeg sound" comes from their sealed cabs. Those cabs to have some break up harmonics going on before they reach their real limit.

Hello everyone, it's been awhile. I haven't kept up with the thread since they got rid of the TB app. Do most of my internet-ing on mobile devices and it's a PITA to keep up via the mobile site.

Still waiting on the Dictator cabs. Bought some pedals, sold some others. My strings have been super dead and I was too lazy to order new ones and my tone has suffered because of it.

Probably coolest news is that as of next week I'll be working for Reverb.com, so no more boring insurance related job, I get to talk to awesome people about gear all day. Pretty stoked for that.

Got a show in early March, it sold out in 6 days which was pretty awesome, and we're playing with my old band Weekend Nachos which will be pretty fun as we have never done that in Chicago.

Yeah, it was pretty obvious when I fired up the amp - "woah, that sounds like an Ampeg".
