Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Vega is loud, but it's easy on the ears. Good, creamy tones with no ear-piercing shrillness.

Good to know, makes sense because we essentially have 3 bass stacks and one for treble.

So after the disappointing jam on Saturday I went through the band members section of CL to see if anything new popped up. BAM, drummer available for DOOM and STONER metal.

I don't know if any of you guys remember my short-lived second project that didn't work out, it was 30 minutes away and there was all sorts of weirdness going on with the guitar player so I bowed out. Well, it's that drummer with the new ad. Guitarist is gone, along with his weirdness. Drummer dude and I got along great and worked well together so I emailed him. He remembered me right away - so still looking for a guitarist, but I'm hoping that between his contacts in that city plus mine (I grew up there, and still know a lot of folks that live there) we might be able to put something together. Drummer is a beast, with awesome gear.

I would still like to do something with the drummer from my last band, but he's got two bands already and is applying for all sorts of jobs that are very far away from wisconsin so I'm starting to think it would be a better idea to try and work with this other dude instead.

At any rate, it's a new development that might actually lead somewhere...

They certainly are. I like this dude and already know him somewhat so that takes a lot of the uncertainty out of the situation. A good friend of mine who is a really good singer lives in the same city as well, so if he was able to join in it would be double awesome. We just need a damn guitar player.

Haha, maybe "need" is too strong of a word. There's just a lot of two-piece stoner/sludge/doom bands around here at the moment. I would love to be able to roll up to a show with a full lineup. We'll see how it shakes out.

You could always have an alternative melody instrument, like a keyboard player.

I've considered that, but I think the chances of finding a keyboard player that's into doom are even slimmer than finding a guitar player.

You know, I really hate Jethro Tull.

If it sounds like doom I don't care if they tune their Johnson to pitch and play that.

There was a local reggae band that did well in the area for years but finally disbanded. Well the keyboardist/singer started a new band, him and a second keyboardist and a drummer. Not knowing and thinking let's go see his new band, a few of my hippie friends said let's go see him play at this awesome BBQ place with a killer bar. Well that was the most boring thing to witness ever, a two keyboard band with no bass or guitar. Just doesn't seem like a band to me when no guitars(long or short neckers) are present.

I was previously in a classic/ old-school heavy metal band. I would do songwriting demos on the computer in Garageband, using built-in drums and doing my own guitar, bass, vocal tracks. On one of the demos, the drummer pointed out that the drum track I had created was not physically do-able because I had put some hi-hat closing/opening concurrently with some double-bass. I replied, "what, don't you have a penis-operated hi-hat pedal?" to which the lead guitarist responded, "Chris, I can't believe you been in the band this long without realizing the entire kit is operated by a d!ck". Good times.

What cab(s) are you going to pair up with the beast?

I'll probably use my Ampeg 810 and 610. I have access to a Mesa 215 but im not in love with how bright it is. I'm keeping my eye out for a cheap older USA Ampeg 810 on the craigslist. Or a heritage 810.

I think those SVT-610 HLFs are horrible. I owned one for awhile and hated it. It's different from the 410 and 810.

The 610s definitely have their own voice. While its not the same as an 810 its in the same ballpark imho. My personal taste for Ampegs is the USA stuff. Ive noticed the new asian 810s are noticeably lighter weight, not as bassy, and can be scratchy/noisy.

I appreciate the 2c. And am loling at "Chumpy McSingerboy". He loves to show off his vintage Marshalls... and it is his project. I did get him to admit that he needs to turn down. Now if I can get him to stack his cabs and set his second amp on my rig so that I can keep my cabs together we would be in business. That would probably also physically convince him to turn down as he will hear himself better with the taller array.
Haha our 2nd guitarists nickname is City Limits the boy viking. Next show I am going to run my 4 pro bridged into my 810. I will probably ABY my signal to my Eden for another 500w into either my 215 or another 810. I have to talk to Hell Night's bassist to see if I can use his cab, though we are friends and I don't see it being an issue. Almost 2 kilowatts and two 810s should be enough for the 200 person club.

Your SVT 4 PRO should be able to run two 810s without breaking a sweat...

Opened for Downfall of Gaia last night. Those guys were super cool. We had a good set. A lot of positive feedback. Got a gig offer. Not bad for a last minute monday night show. Another local band Sleeping Ancient played too. Pretty neat. They're like... post-black metal? Also local band Teeth-Grinder. Turns out crust punks not dead. They showed up over an hour late to open the show with a 15 min set. But they were surprisingly polite and friendly group considering they're literally young punks. Their drummer had a super cute pink haired girlfriend that was a beast at loading equipment.
