Dudes, I'm putting together a new Jazz bass. Looking for pickups. Thoughts? I play doom in B standard, and love mids. My first thoughts were the SD "Hot" Jazz, as it's got a 4/6/4 tone profile. I've got a P Quarter Pounder in a different bass that I like, but the jazz quarter pounder tone profile shows scooped, not enhanced mids. Thoughts?

Body: Black Korina on Black Korina, Gotoh 201 bridge, rosewood control plate, Cocobolo knobs.
Neck: Wenge with Macassar Ebony FB, hipshot tuners

I thought higher impedance meant a drop in the treble, hence the need for 500k plus pots on humbuckers.

Is there a good article on how the shifts in pickup design do cause tonal variation?

Welp...couldn't hold off any longer. GAS has been hitting me hard so I ordered another Voodoo Bass. That is the one pedal that has always stuck with me.

??? The point of the attenuator is to get amp dirt/distortion at low volumes. If you want clean sound their isn't any reason to use one

Yeah, definitely meant the police. I am not necessarily looking to get tube grind at low volume. I would really just like to enjoy the amp. Turning down is barely an option. Through an avatar 115, it shakes the sh!t out my apartment. Really I would probably set my amp volume to 4 or 5 and use the attenuator to bring it down to practice amp volumes.

At least, that is the thought.

Alright, Model J's ordered! I'll also be adding a series/parallel push/pull switch, to put the pickups in series. Should be fun!

In other news, I have a thunderbird body with Hipshot bridge for sale, if anyone is interested. Ash with Quilted Maple top. Very thin finish. Used with some wear, pick marks, but looks beautiful. I just can't handle the ergonomics. Body/Bridge Only.

That's pretty much what I just did with my PJ.
Model P, Model J, 3-way neck/series/bridge switch, Tonestyler, and push/pull on the volume (500k) for series/parallel on the J pickup.

Probably going to change the volume to get rid of push/pull. There's no reason to ever put the J in parallel.

Really this has been the best upgrade to any bass I've ever done.
All I need to do now is drop my Kickass bridge for a hipshot.

Excellent! In the Tbird, I had series/par for each pickups coils and then a global series/par. I agree, no need for individual series/par, but the global was great. Mind you, this was with my Bullock pickups. I've had a few issues with magnets (rod instead of bar) losing their magnetism, and can't find pickup covers that fit the damn neck route. Dimarzio/SD sizes are correct, not sure why every generic pickup cover isn't. : / I love hipshot bridges dearly, but wanted something a bit more traditional with this build, so went with the gotoh. Solid brass. No complaints.

This might sound stupid but the only reason the kickass is going away is so I can fit larger strings without filing. Honestly anything with drop in slots would do fine. I really dislike a B @.130 or less. So it's time.

I live in the sub zone. In Vega thats all i got, my guitarust runs a guitar stack and a bass stack essentially, theres really no cutting through his tone so I just pummel with low end. Thats why its been a tough time finding the simplest and best way to reproduce that in a rig. I think ive found it.

You're not going to like me saying this... and normally for our genre, I don't recommend them, but...

If you want a shitload of sub, fEarfuls kinda are probably the way to go about it. Peaveys are great and all, but most of the Peavey cabs I've played through are actually kinda Ampeggy in their voicing. Big in the low mids, not in the sub lows.

Though speaking of Ampeg, if you want obscene amounts of sub low, those 410HLF cabs that I despise and think are garbage for what I'm doing might be well suited. Just take out the tweeters.

I wish I wasn't so short of money that I'm selling a bass right now. Because that T-bird body looks nice, and the bridge pickup looks far enough from the bridge saddles to be actually usable on its own. *Sigh*

if i was a huge jerk to the sound guys i'd find one of those deep folded 18s and a big power amp to run a clean meatbox signal into next to my regular rig.

So the Catapult plan right now is apparently to write six new songs (of which, two are finished, basically, and we've played them live), and put four of them on a new album and maybe two on a split. Depending how long they each are. The ones that are done so far are about nine minutes each, I think.
