Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

What's up Doom brothers? I have not had any time to post lately but I have been keeping up with you all. Still the coolest group of bros on the interwebz.

I added a Yamaha PSR-E443 keyboard to my jam room. I use it for a metronome and drums when I practice bass and also helping me learn to read music. Learning a little Type O Negative and Deep Purple on it for fun. My five year old daughter really enjoys it as well. I run it through a spare Peavy TNT I have so it brings the thunder.

I'll try to post a pic in a day or two.

Took the Mrs out for my half of our anniversary.:)
Drank alot of microbrews in the little Viking town nearby.:thumbsup:
Tried a kiwi beer-terrible.:vomit:
Tried a white chocolate porter-somewhat less terrible.:thumbsdown:
Tried a dandelion beer-somehow good?:eyebrow:
Best beer of the night was an Amber lager. :thumbsup:Brought me home a growler of that.
Sat in a bar and heard a band. Eh.:beaver:
Got back to the hotel planning on some hottub action.drool
Had to call down to the front desk for help working the hottub.:(:rage:

Black Korina Bass Update. All done except for rosewood pickguard that's on it's way. Loving how it turned out. Used tinted Velvit Oil on the body. Really happy with the results. Won't be able to play it on the big rig for a few days, but sounds effing great through the small rig. Smooth, unobtrusive highs, Wonderfully vocal yet growly mids, and tight but strong lows. Series switch is pretty wicked. I really like the Wenge/Macassar Ebony/Black Korina combo. All the woods really compliment each other well both tonally and visually. The pickguard should really set it off, which will be sanded to ~1200 grit and oiled.

In usual warmoth fashion, neck bolted up perfectly and action was 90% the way there without any adjustments whatsoever. A few tweaks to saddle height and intonation and it was perfect. The wonder of CNC.

Most of all, I'm stoked to not have a wrist bone that feels like it's going to explode. Something about my technique just does not work with thunderbird bodies. Sad, since I love them aesthetically.

Hey all, I'm thinking of changing up my rig and could use some insight...currently I'm using a Fender Classic 70's P>Demon King>Meatsmoke (2 channel pre pedal)>Crest CA6>NV215. The Meatsmoke is rad but I'm not crazy about the dirt channel and think I could get what I need out of something cheaper. In one band I do a David Sims Jesus Lizard thing and just started a doom band that I haven't dialed in my tone for yet. Basically I need a solid clean tone to run dirt pedals into. Looking at grabbing an Alembic F-1x and Ampeg SVT-IIP, trying both and selling one. Any thought on these? Also been thinking of an old GK 800RB but not sure if it'll have power for the volume I like.

F-1x is another fender tone stack like the Meatsmoke. Considerably less (dirty)gain, but maybe in the ballpark enough. The Trace Elliott Vtype and BBE Bmax are also both clean preamps based on fender tone stacks. Generally found cheaper than the F-1x. The BBE also has a semi parametric mid if you want to add a little boost somewhere in the mids for character. Reportedly huge bass on that one too. Should be a good match for your sealed Berg cab.

Have to be careful with the BBE Bmax. That thing has no HPF, so if your amp doesnt have something in line, you can pass DC.

Ha, thought there might be some opposition. I was really torn between guard/no guard. If the body wasn't top routed with no control plate, it'd be a no-brainer, definitely no pickguard. I feel like the shape/lines of the controlplate looks awkward by itself I guess. No?

mbelue, I haven't done oil on Maple, but it should in theory be even easier than this wood. Tighter grain should mean less coats needed. I started with sanding to 400 grit, then applied oil and sanded into wood with the 400 grit. Let sit for ~30 min, wipe excess. Let dry completely, then go to next higher grit and repeat. I finished it off with a orbital buffer with some tripoli polishing compound to even out the surface and make is super smooth and semi-gloss. You shouldn't need it with maple, but if you don't want to see pores, grain fill before oil.

This is the pickguard I ordered. Will be finished to match the rosewood controlplate (lightly dyed darker, sanded smooth and oiled):
