Wow. I don't know the specifics other than it was a partial collapse and he had to dig him out I suppose. My grandfather died two years before I was born from black lung of course. Wish he didn't as I sure would of loved to have bought him a boilermaker sometime.

As for drum finish. I was gonna do tru-oil/b. Linseed, but each shell is a different shade, and I hate things looking off. Being cheap and OCD, I watched a 7min vid of a guy sanding and staining with minwax, then clear coating. Came out really nice. He stained in his drums too.

I still might just oil the inside, I've never heard how these drums sound so I can't say how they will change. I'm 99% sure it's going to be setup with the junk bottom heads cut away to allow for the lugs and rims to be put on while still acting as concert toms.

Why do nearing edges have to be left alone? I'll mask them off, but I'm curious. I get not reshaping it, but I figure any finish isn't that thick?

Should be killer! That's what I did as well, stripped, sanded, stained, oiled. Oil inside should be fine, especially if you aren't concerned about preserving a sound. The difference likely isn't massive anyway. I noticed just a warmer, thumpier, sound, HOWEVER, that was after removing the wrap as well, so I never had a true before/after with the oil, did it all at once. I wouldn't worry about it.

Bearing edges always sound best when they're as sharp as possible. The sharper, the more attack and resonance you'll get. The rounder they are, the less attack, and less sustain you'll get. If there are any nicks or flat spots, that can screw up tuning, and give you odd resonances/buzzes in your head once tuned up. If you don't sand the bearing edges and just apply a bit of oil, that should be OK, but just don't knock down the edges at all if possible. Some guys actually wax the bearing edges to get a more consistent tack between head/edge. I did it, but again, since I did so many things at once, I can't say what it did by itself for tone.

Mounting technique is a big deal too. shell-mounts hinder sustain much more than rim-clamp mounts. I personally use a snare stand for my tom, but I only use one rack tom, and one floor tom.

I'll probably try that wax thing, sounds not too expensive, and it wouldn't hurt to have beeswax around the house I imagine.

By the end of the day I'll have a few snares and stands to choose from, including a double Tom stand. That said my rack toms are Pearl style shell mount, so they are gonna have a big chunk of hardware or at least a gaping hole in them if I don't mount them via that hole.
