Mudd, I've played cheap gear for years and no one's ever said a word about it. Most people really don't care what others play, those that do are horrible jackasses.

I have a 70's Lotus Les Paul that is an incredible instrument - I'd happily rock a Lotus P bass. Do a little digging online, it's quite possible that your Lotus was made in the Matsumoko factory - which will easily triple its value.

Id skip the 610 Jan...unless you look into some of the nicer sealed 610s, like berg or barefaced, I think ashdown makes a decent one now...the ampeg 610 is boom town, in a bad way.

In the last gigging band I was in I switched from a Ric to a MIM P and no one cared, because it fit better in the mix. Well, the singer said something once and immediately disclaimed it by saying it sounded great so don't worry about it.

Keep lotus and SX. Sell/trade the mim. Also sell/trade the guts and black guard unless they are gonna go in a keeper bass.

Yeah, didn't spend much for the guts/pickguard. They'd probably go to feed the SX. I don't think the SX is worth selling to anyone. Probably make as much just selling the neck, and I love that neck.

Yeah I also have a Lotus Strat I just picked up (for $25.) Plays great actually. Korean, so probably 80s-early 90s (if the Lotus brand existed that recently.) I like the Lotus better than a '96 Chinese Squier Strat (which is another thing I'm going to sell, though I know I won't get much for it.)

The Lotus bass IS most likely Matsumoku. It has a "Made in Japan" sticker on it, and I believe the Japanese Lotuses were made at Matsumoku. My Lotus is identical to the Hondo Deluxe 830 P bass model from the same period. I've had other Matsumoku basses that were better than the Lotus...most recently an excellent "Memphis" brand P bass that actually had Matsumoku stamped on the neck plate. Was forced to sell it when we moved from Oregon.

But the Lotus is pretty damn nice in its own right. I am addicted to the neck on that thing. It converted me from someone who preferred rosewood boards to a maple fan.

Yep. They turned out some great stuff. The Lotus P is definitely second-tier as it's got a laminated body, but it has a really high mass brass bridge on it and it does play and sound good. I need to fiddle with the nut a bit (woo-hoo!)

I know this Lotus was made before 1979 because the owner of the pawn shop where I got it told me his brother bought the bass in Austin in '78 or '79 and it was allegedly a couple years old at the time. At least I have no reason to think he's lying to me.

Thanks again for everyone's advice. I'm gonna stay on this. I may have enough other crud to sell that I could hang onto the Lotus, the MIM and still fix up the SX and still swing a giggable amp rig. After that, I may still offload one of the basses, but it'd be a hard decision. Between the three of them I'm pretty much GAS free as far as instruments go...
