Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

A band hit me up about jamming with them, based off my "bassist looking for doom/stoner/sludge" ad up on CL. They're one of those "Occult Rock/Metal" bands with super clean, clangy guitar tones and a female singer doing a King Diamond impression. I honestly wanted to tear my ears off my head listening to their demos, trying to find a polite way to decline.

Some devil's advocate here: with clean tone guitars, you'd have plenty of room to fuzz things up...

Duly noted and I have actually done that, in a kind of folk/punk band a couple years ago, but I seriously disliked this band's music. I'm not into that style of "metal" at all. I don't mind the retro rock thing, Graveyard rocks, but this is a step too far for me. I was very polite and diplomatic in my return email.

I'd go talk you them and fuzz it up. Maybe see if they're interested in getting heavier.

It might be worth it for the laughs to show up with a bass tuned to B > Wizard Fuzz > Mr. Grumpy > 2x Duallies, overpower with forceful volume, then never speak to them again.

He replied to my polite decline (that was basically "Just interested in the music listed in my ad"), with something along the lines of "np man, just thought you might be interested since we all have a background in more extreme music". That kind of made me laugh to myself. Well dude, get back at me when it's in the foreground again.

I don't get stoned either. Lots of people into this music and on this thread don't actually. Lots do too, takes all kinds.

I listen to the Pallbearer demo from 2010 pretty often, haven't heard their newer stuff as much. I think that recording starts with fuzzy bass. The bass always seemed a little buried in the mix in their recordings to me, at least a little more midrangey than super low and punchy, but not absent.

I used to get stoned everyday for years, now I don't. Think it's silly to name a genre after a lifestyle but whatever. No one cares right? I know, not sure why I even said it.

Is the bass heard better live? any examples of Stoner/Doom metal bands where you can really hear the bass? Another band I have heard and liked was TruckFighters

Every time I listen to Stoner/Doom metal, I do have this thought in the back of my mind, of "Damn, some sativa would make this even better"

I would try it again, but I always end up doing it daily and it becomes sort of like a 'monkey on my back' situation. $10 a day, really adds up. etc*

I don't find that Ron gets buried in bongripper but you do basically need a sub woofer to hear him lol. I don't get buried in Centaurus but we don't yet have recordings either. The bassist in let it breathe doesn't get buried. lotsa bassists in this genre don't get buried.

Hey, it's better than what I find. Not only am I in Oklahoma, but I'm in my 40s now, so it seems like every time I see a "Bassist wanted" ad and it sounds like music I might possibly be into, there's always a disclaimer like "Must be under 25 and look good in guyliner."

When it comes to guys my age, it's seriously always "Mid-life crisis rockers seeking bass man. Must sport Hawaiian shirts and cargo shorts. Basically, we play "After Midnight" by Clapton, "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger and "Long Run" by The Eagles over and over and over again...pls call or txt if interested..."

Right now it's all moot anyway unless I can get an amp together. I mentioned an old drummer friend of mine wants to do something, but he's got no ampage either. At least this guy has taste. We played in many bands together in the past and not only is he the best drummer I ever worked with, we mostly like all the same stuff...

Someday. Someday I WILL climb back on that horse.

It's also like that here, there's just only 4 ads and they're that. These guys I guarantee are at least an hour drive away, where it's still mostly that stuff but then one or two bands that are pretty underground, just not at all a good fit with me. I can't imagine any "Occult Rock" type band imagines me when they think of their stage presence either.
