Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I love the Rat with solid state and hybrid amps, with my current bass and amplifier set up, this particular Rat pedal (USA Rat 2, w/ lm308) is not as good. I'm sure a VT or Rat Tail would be better options.

It's a great pedal, but it's not what i need right now.
I think we've all had that one thing that technically should be awesome, but isn't. This might be that for you.

My omni15 did not like fuzz at all

There is this Band called PallBearer. I really dig it. and no, I don;t get stoned. Even with studio headphones, I can barely hear the bass, what gives??

Its OK. I don't either and a lot of Gus in this thread don't either.

As far as bass being buried, I never have that problem...

guitars are really the focal point so a lot of the rest gets buried.

I don't get the "stoned" comment. why do you need to state that and so what if you did get stoned?

I think the rest of TB thinks we all do.

It's been a long time since I worked retail, but we used to get some weirdos at the pet shop - worst was the batsh*t crazy guinea pig breeder. Despite her lack of basic hygiene, odd fashion sense, long, LONG rambling diatribes about the government, her animals were always completely healthy, clean, vaccinated, well-fed and tame. So we continued to buy her guinea pigs.

When I had the record store job we'd get a seriously drunk guy in 2-3 times a week. Always first thing in the morning, he'd be waiting outside, reeking of liquor. Gruff and drunk but mostly polite, he'd spend several hundred dollars at a time on CDs and Vinyl. After a while he opened up a bit, turned out he was a Emergency Room doctor. He'd finish his godawful long shift at 6:00 AM, have a few drinks at home then cab or bike it over to the record store. Nice guy, felt bad for assuming he was just some terminal alcoholic.
Quite a few ER doctors are.

Way louder live. Also the production between their albums is quite different.

I used to get stoned everyday for years, now I don't. Think it's silly to name a genre after a lifestyle but whatever. No one cares right? I know, not sure why I even said it.

Is the bass heard better live? any examples of Stoner/Doom metal bands where you can really hear the bass? Another band I have heard and liked was TruckFighters
Yob, especially on the Atma album. Neurosis on most of their albums. Sleep on everything they have, basically. Electric Wizard, especially on Dopethrone.

It's as heavy as most pedals get with the gain turned completely off. Sounds thick as hell on bass. The daddy-o is a guv'nor and when fed into the fabtone, you get a bright edge to the distortion and retain all the low end.

I have two fabtones actually just in case.
Haven't tried it on bass yet, it's gonna live on my guitar board. Will definitely give it a shot now, though!

Anyone here ever diddle one of those acoustic Kala U-basses? I usually have time to kill in the morning, watching cartoons with Micah, so I pull out my bass and practice scales because I can't hear what I am playing. Well poor kid banged his head into the headstock, he saw the bass was there, but he was in the cartoon zone and pretended like the neck wasn't there. He didn't get hurt bad but I would rather have a tiny acoustic bass for the mornings and outside. Rondo Music and Harley Benton have knock off U-Basses for cheap and they are tempting me.

Went to the local theater and saw an REM career retrospective/documentary last night; wife's fave band though I dig them, too. Good stuff. Been spinning some of their early catalogue this a.m.

I loved Anthrax when I was a kid and I saw a pic of Scott Ian holding up an REM album in a Metal Rag so I picked one up like hey it is ok to listen to other stuff then metal and punk.

god that's a good song.

any of ya'll tried the Angry Troll on bass? i think i want big fuzzes and a tube slamming boost. the RAT is squishing everything way too much in my current band mix which is unfortunate.

Do eeet man!!!! Dats what Im doin now, phase wizard is boosting the Mace pushing dem tubez and I run big fuzz through everything else.

But im sad to report Ric copy is dying in my hands, its on its last last leg. Just doesnt sound good anymore, its falling apart and the truss rod is already maxed. To me its not worth fixing, its an old cheap plywood copy, plus its pushing 40 years old.

Im am restoring that Soviet/japanese no name bass but if that doesnt work out dont know what im gonna do besides drop the coin and buy a real ric.
