Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I used to get stoned everyday for years, now I don't. Think it's silly to name a genre after a lifestyle but whatever. No one cares right? I know, not sure why I even said it.

Is the bass heard better live? any examples of Stoner/Doom metal bands where you can really hear the bass? Another band I have heard and liked was TruckFighters

lots of bands in the genre where you can hear the bass. avoid anything on Riding Easy Records though. all those band sound the same. lots of guitars with a lot of low end boosted on them, doesn't leave much room for the bass.

any of ya'll tried the Angry Troll on bass? i think i want big fuzzes and a tube slamming boost. the RAT is squishing everything way too much in my current band mix which is unfortunate.

The Stoner Rock thing was just something a journalist coined. You should check out the documentary, Such Hawks, Such Hounds. Very good introduction to this music.

Not for lack of trying, but I can't get the Rat to play nice with the svt. Like you said, it squishes. It also cuts low end and clanks like a mother, even with the filter all the way up. Havent tried the angry troll, but I've been having excellent results from the Palmer Bazz, it's a really simple circuit that is available online, if kits or buliding your own is something you enjoy.

I mean, the still valley recording, (which is going to the vinyl press soon!!!) is a rat on bass. I love the way it sounds on that recording. Anyways, maybe you are more of a muff man?

I have the mid selector one click left of center and slightly boosted. Bass has treble rolled almost completely off, mids and bass flat. Really I think the issue is having the OD on the 2Pro turned up. The Rat doesn't sound as good as the amp od is what it really comes down to, I think.

There's tons of variations and i don't know which one the palmer is closest to.

It absolutely kills through a cranked tube amp.

Hence why I've been loving the volt thrower. I have no squish. It'd bass ND grindy as all hell.

I love the Rat with solid state and hybrid amps, with my current bass and amplifier set up, this particular Rat pedal (USA Rat 2, w/ lm308) is not as good. I'm sure a VT or Rat Tail would be better options.

It's a great pedal, but it's not what i need right now.

Thanks @askrere ! Didn't know the Fab Tone was an HM-2 before you informed me of that, and I scooped one up local for cheap. Sounded great in a 10 min soundcheck I got in tonight. More extensive soundcheck tomorrow!

Maybe, I suspect your using the EQ on your SVT much different than that of your Hartke.

I bet mid selector all the way right with a slight cut might get you somewhere close.
The active EQ in your Ampeg can make very similar sounds both boosting and cutting.
It's easy to make SVTs sound good and not experiment much.
(Why the hell am I fighting so hard to get you to keep the Rat?)

It's as heavy as most pedals get with the gain turned completely off. Sounds thick as hell on bass. The daddy-o is a guv'nor and when fed into the fabtone, you get a bright edge to the distortion and retain all the low end.

I have two fabtones actually just in case.
