Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Impulse bought the DOD 250 again, figuring I could take it back if I didn't like it. Sounded fantastic in store, not so much in my rig. Wonder if it's my flats? I had to crank the OD up to get any grind at all at home, but it was grindy much earlier in store. And the Blower Box was grindier in store on rounds, but not as much on flats. That extra OD on the 250 at home made it much to0 trebly for me. That's all I can think of difference-wise. GC always has my GK rig in stock to play through, and the modern version of my Ibanez there as well. Oh, well. Guess I'll return it, and won't be getting a DOD 250 clone kit after all! Back to the Blower Box at low gain it is!

When I use a DOD 250 with really dead round wounds, it can get pretty fuzzy and squished sounding and not grindy at all. So it may be the flats.

Lots of riffs and even more solos.

Hell yes. I used to have this on vinyl. I really think Dylan Carlson must have been listening to this album around the time he was working on Earth 2.

I really like Holden. He's covered a lot of territory, from one of my favorite surf bands of the 60s (even though they recorded very little) to his time in Blue Cheer and his solo stuff. He was also in The Other Half which is one of my favorite garage rock bands. Should be better known.

So if I just fix it, it's only $14. If I want to transfer to different enclosure, it would have to be rewired, rebuilt, and would cost $60. Hmmm

I think I mght just go for the fix. He did say he could put a momentary feedback switch on it for the same cost as fixing, so that might be better.

Anyone else have a pedal that they have to hold down to make work? How easy is this in a live situation? Has to be easier than trying to flick a toggle with your foot, right?

Hmm, wife just texted me that we got a check for $1800 from the IRS in the mail, along with a separate envelope containing a letter that says we got this check because we never cashed a previous check from 2013.

I remember 2013, there's no way in hell we forgot to cash a check.

It's not our tax refund, we already got that.

So... woohoo?

Gonna call them tonight and make sure it's legit, really hope it is.

Oh man...could be good news, but you are wise to tread carefully.

Yeah, don't want that one coming back to bite us 3 years from now.

Wife could really use a new laptop. I could really use my buddy's SWR 6x10.

We did have some mail disappear when we were living at that place, but I'm not understanding how we could possibly miss $1800. Especially back then, when we were not as comfortable as we are now.

Aron, when you check it make sure it doesn't say "Internal Revenue Services". The extra "s" is a scam that's been going around, mostly by phone, but we've gotten bogus checks at the office before from Universities and all kinds of places that had one letter off from the correct spelling.

Yup heard about it on the news then got called myself. They said I owed a bunch and had criminal charges brewing or some nonsense.

Between being a full time student and only flipping music gear, for the past few years it's hard to scare me with owe more taxes call, when i haven't had to fill out a return since 2010...

I want to record voice commands using my voice and someone else's and see if leela responds. And then make a video of myself giving her instructions and see if she responds.

Ultimate test is leave the house her inside and play a recorded command and see if she responds while I'm away. Recording her.

Anyone ever heard of or tried these experiments with their dogs?

There was this one guy named Pavlov...

Must be it then. I had to add distortion to get treble, and then by that time, it was too distorted for its main use. I'm trying to put a nice dynamic OD in that spot, and the Blower Box sounds great, but I feel like I'm fighting its high gain nature. Thought the 250 would do it for me. Basically, I'm running the OD into my B3K and GK Rails Pedal, so I need it to play well with others down the line. Might have to try my old JohnK Gamma Bass there tomorrow. I should be able to get just a touch of hair with that in front.

The DOD 250 is really dependent on what's in front of and after it. I had different experiences with different pickups, amps and cabs. Also depending on volume levels. I really liked it with a hot pickup and pushing the cab really hard. Occasionally I paired it with a really tight sounding distortion, like a Boss DS-1, that gave it some more edge. Of course I got both for about $20 each, so that was a rig of budgetary convenience.
