Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Hey dudes, Melvins was awesome as per usual. Pinkus had a pair of 400+ heads and an aluminum flying V. Buzz had a couple of solid state preamps (looked like the old Roland ones from the late 70's/early 80's that Greg Ginn used to use) into some crown XLS power amps and emperor 4x12 cabs.
It's pretty shaging awesome when a town of 275,000 can sell out a Melvins show (400+ capacity at the venue).
Other than that, lazing around the house today, got some soup going in the crock pot, posting some stuff to ebay, bought a new car stereo online because my cd player died. Going full-on USB, SD card slot, 1/8" input + CD player. I'm not shaging around.

Are they clones or did he have them painted or something? They're all black, no red, no sunn knobs, no labelling at all that i could see. Not that it matters, sounded awesome.
Edit: yep, it was a pair of these (without the sunn power amp).

While I was home for lunch I got a string onto my P bass and verified that it actually makes sound. I don't wanna fuss with setting it up, since it's NEVER been setup, as I just built it. So I think I'm going to bring it to the nearest Guitar Center tomorrow, a half hour drive away, and just have it sorted out.
There's not a better place than GC to take a bass for a setup close to you? I guess it doesn't matter if they do good work, but I figured Salinas was big enough to have a couple of good techs around. Maybe they all got headhunted by GC?
I can do setups but its kind of like doing an oil change on a car. I can do an oil change but it's such a PITA I'd rather pay someone $40 to do it.
Setups aren't as messy as an oil change, but they do get kind of frustrating.
In the past, I'd do stuff like refinishing and wiring/electronic guts stuff myself then go to someone I trust and let them string it up and do the setup.
Dayyyy-ummm. that sounds killer. But you think Vegas would be worse on your migraines?
Maybe just triple up on your kava intake?
There's no place at all. There's a music shop in Monterey, which is just as far a drive, that does things like sell generic guitar starter packs for $500 more than you can get them new from any website. All the techs I've had do good work for me are an hour drive away or slightly more and I don't feel like driving that far. Especially for something I can do myself, but just don't feel like doing.
No idea if it would but I guess kind of well I get them here so I guess it doesn't matter if I get them there too.
I'm gonna offer my SB2 and an overdrive in trade for a 1974 V4B. Long term idea is to run that and my 2000s into two duallies, if it's loud enough.
Land deal got to be too much to take on. Had a long think and decided beyond financial struggle and the less than decent terms, I read all you guys talking about moving and realizes suddenly I'm not sure I want to remain in Denton beyond a year or two.
My friend just got a ton of vintage recording gear and a tube tester and we're gonna learn to DIY record in my bedroom. As a consolation.
My other consolation was the bass vi I got before hand. I've been trying different pedals through it and setups.
Bad stone phaser had a lot of promise and might still on guitar, but it's not my favorite so far on bass vi. It's either too much or too slow, need to find an in between. Also the last 1/8 of travel on all knobs if engaged cause it to like glitch and just produce a low volume rumble hum thing.
The joyo UD has the best all around just using one pedal writing riffs application, Max gain and tone, 1/4 level w/ bright engaged. Going to try a new idea today after I get back from helping a friend car shop.
bass vi > korg pitch black > cool cat stereo chorus Y
Side 1 > daddy-o > rockmaster > pair of 4x10 columns
Side 2 > fab tone > dan echo > onboard spring reverb > peavey musician 400 > dually and bassic
So hot marshally tubey Goodness 8x10, and super effect laden 3x15 stack.
Kinda want a cleaner SS head than the musician. A 400rb or 800rb, maybe big old acoustic head of found cheap.

Hartke is clean cheap and reliable.
Sorry the land/house didn't end up working out, but i think you made the right choice. You're young, you have a lot of time to figure stuff out and you'll be able to do a lot more if you're not tied down to a house and property.

In janitor land i was woken up at 7:30 this morning by a call from the landlord. New dryer arrives today! Woohoo! Also meant that i had to get up and start cleaning house. Just finished that up, waiting for dude to get here. 7:30 is too early for this dude to be awake on a Saturday though...

Well, it's good you considered it well and came to a clear-headed decision. While it sounded like a great deal (from what you posted about it here) that has always been my #1 problem with owning property. In my life, I have never lived in one place more than three years in a row. I've sometimes been in the same town or state that long, but never in one dwelling.
I know lots of people who grew up with and still live around the same people and neighborhoods they were around when they were in kindergarten. While I like the idea of that kind of stabilty and continuity, it is foreign to me.
At my age now I really WANT to settle down. Take trips and vacations instead of moving so often, but have a home base to come back to.
But the idea still gives me pause. At 46 to dig in somewhere and change my mindset to "Well, this is IT...this is HOME...forever" is, in a way, unsettling itself.
Obviously you can try to sell a house and move anytime, but it sounds like an ordeal. Will it sell for more than you bought it for/owe on it? How long will it be on the market? How will the inspection and appraisal go down? Etc., etc.
Also, I am so used to being able to call a landlord to fix anything that goes wrong. I've never had to be financially responsible for roof repairs, an appliance crapping out, electrical or plumbing problems. I'm handy enough to take care of some of those issues myself before I bother the landlord, but it's nice to be able to say "Eh, screw this...call the man."
I am hoping that all the jobs I've been putting in for in Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and a few other states may pan out so that we can skeedaddle from Jokelahoma, make more $$$ and find a place we like enough to make it our permanent HQ.

I have a question of scale. Is it possible to increase the scale of a bass by moving the bridge. Or must I replace the 34" neck with a 35". I like the thought of slanting the bridge like the Dingwall. I know those necks and frets are fanned and that might have everything to do with the slanted bridge. I have a 34" fretless and I have recently picked up a set of four individual, top loading saddle/bridges. I tune my bass to F# and use .158 nylon wrapped strings. This is why I want the extra length in scale. I'm asking here because this is one of the only forums I read. This is the music I live with. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
