Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Well, it is the most populous country in the world, and has been for hundreds of years. So it's not really surprising that wars and other such things would have the highest body count there.
Keep in mind that a 2000S cab is huge and therefore you will be dinging it a fair bit.
I just put new speakers in mine, actually.

Watched a youtube demo of the Afterneath pedal.

So I'm having a issue with my "raunchy" dirt boxes (rat/fea dirt/foad) and the l2000. When I turn them on they squeal like crazy. Gain down or volume down they still squeal. Is the bass still too "hot"? I lowered the pickups quite a bit after the whole distorting SVT thing. Maybe this is what people mean when they say they are "aggressive" sounding? Any thoughts??
Right? I've learned the past few years, I don't want much, if any, treble controls on my stuff. If it needs one, it's too bright for my bass tastes. Even my high gain Supercollider I have at low tone, high mass (bass). Don't get any of that treble nonsense in my BASS rig!
Another practice with the "new band" is in the can. Loving it! It's a much more open-minded crew, just wanting to play good music, so it's awesome. And we each get the idea of "hanging back" instead of just full blown riffage all the time. Lets everything breathe and just sounds 1000x better. And we don't even have a full band yet! Can't wait to get a drummer and solidify our singer situation.
In other news, I just re-enlarged my pedalboard again. Got 10 pedals on it, now, but 3 are utility pedals (tuner, HPF, gate). Still, it's the biggest my board's ever been, and it's still nice and tidy. Looking good, and sounding better! IF I ever get the MB200 racked up, that'll open up a good quarter of the board. I can think of a few pedals to fill in that space, but until then, I'm gonna make a bare bones board of the Bass Synth Wah, Joyo American and Joyo UD. Maybe throw some iStomps on for wacky effects. Should be fun.
Speaking of the Bass Synth Wah, still no news on settings here, @Pelham Bleu . I'm trying, but it's just not clicking. Not that the wah stuff is bad, but the SA is just better. Guess that's expected. Anyway, I'll keep searching for fun synth/filter stuff with it, and let you know. Right now, if I could get rid of the ultra-high-end regions of the effect, it'd be perfect. Love the bass content, but that synthy treble on top is killing me.

Has nothing to do with not liking high end. I'm fine with it and like a fair amount in my sound. Enough that it's relatively clanky and clangy. You probably wouldn't like my sound at all, ha.
I just don't like extra EQ knobs. Too many things to EQ with in a row makes EQing overly complicated. I prefer to just use the ones on my amp.
I don't want any kind of EQ knob on a goddamn reverb pedal.
Nor do I want one on a fuzz pedal.
In both those cases, I don't want to change the EQ, I just want the same sound I already had, but with the effect applied.
It's especially annoying when there seems to be no way to set the knob to do nothing, like the "tone" control on the Big Muff and the "filter" control on the Swollen Pickle.
Hell, I don't even use the tone knobs on my bass.

Gotcha! I totally get that side of it, too. I have few "extra" EQ knobs on my stuff for the same basic reason. I always figure I can EQ certain effects to get specific sounds I like/want, so that's my take on the few extra knobs I do have. But for the most part, none of my pedals really have any extra EQ built in, just the standard knobs for most versions of the type of OD, maybe 1 extra. I have thought many times, however, just like you do, that I just want my bass sound but "fuzzy/overdriven/distorted". Having a GK rig, I bought GK Rails Pedal and for the most part, that's "my sound" now, and I run everything else with that to get my heavier variants. I tend toward simpler effects, my favorites and the ones that make the bulk of my tone all having 3 or less knobs.
Most pedals I use, even "high gain" ones, are typically pretty quiet while engaged, even at some higher settings. Besides the typical amp hiss, that is. What specific pedals are you using? And have you checked the easy stuff? Cables, amp/bass EQ, are your pickups facing the speakers etc.? Just a thought. If necessary, maybe get a gate? Spitballing here.
Ummm...is the G&L active? Dying batteries? Some sort of microphonic effect in the pickups? Shot in the dark?

what it does is affect the treble content in the repeats. on bass it is way too subtle. i barely notice a difference using it at home. with the band that control has no effect.
in chitown for a few days. going to try and hit up the chicago music exchange if i can find time to sneak out of this conference.

All my dirt pedals do to regardless of guitar or bass I've used. Some setups are better than others. Fabtone and hm-2 are some of the squealiest things I've ever used. Soon as my fingers leave the strings it's a quivering banshee. I'm really good cavity shielding and a noise gate would be the best bet. ISP decimator seems to get the praise and there's a Mooer clone.
Is there a setting where it's essentially "off"?
Pretty much every dirt/fuzz pedal I've ever had has basically required me to turn it off if I'm not playing a note, due to noise. Fuzz pedals practically scream.
I'm lamenting not ponying up the $600+ for a sunburst T-40 fretless...that thing was beaut. Was listed on area CL a couple years ago.
I do miss having a fretless. Been years.

So, although I like some death metal, I don't necessarily like the vocal style. Do all stoner/doom bands share the growled/screamed vocals, or do some have more traditional vocals?
